I am a first-generation, BIPOC, Haitian-American student. I can describe myself as a very honest, open, and attentive person. I’m passionate about achieving a career specialized in meeting one-on-one with clients through communication, listening, sympathy, patience, and an most importantly learning. I believe that the past challenges with my mental health can greatly contribute in my willingness to learn and understand more of the field in health sciences, particularly clinical psychology. I am confident in setting out my dedication, discipline and devotion to college, overall.
Without it being said, part of my passion for this career goes out to the majority of young boys and girls living in households who feel misunderstood. I lived through long periods of my life being untreated and unheard. I lived through long periods of my parents in disbelief of depression and anxiety, to name a few. They’re not alone.
I understand and also hear the people who get turned down by jobs due to the timeline of their mental health. I take every ounce of pride in saying that anybody’s state of mind does NOT define anybody’s character. I did not intend to share a generic life lesson, this is just a portion of the mindset I’m willing to carry and share with those in need; with the route of my desired career.
I believe that mental health care knows no color, race or background. I believe that everyone’s needs are valid.
And that’s what I intend to help someone with in today’s generation.

Marie J. Smith Esq. Social Sciences Scholarship
Particularly growing and living with mental health issues, I desire to dedicate my future into helping those that had a hard time dealing, expressing themselves, and coping with their mental health. I feel indebted to the young, misunderstood girls/boys who aren’t supported when reaching for the help they need.
As a Haitian black woman, I understand the underlying stereotypes in Caribbean and African-American households of mental health not being seen as a priority.
If I, as one person, am able to contribute to my community in this specific field of study, we will draw towards the value of prioritizing our mental health. One graduate at a time.
Clinical psychologists in any area are difficult to access on a first-hand basis, compared to the vast amount of staffing in the nursing field. I believe that medical care and mental health are equally as dire.
I believe I am deserving of this scholarship because I will be studying to advance in the field of those providing psychological help to those in need.
