I am recently a first time mom and looking to further my education so I can work in education. I love creating art and have thought of pursuing a career in education for years but had not had the opportunity to attend higher learning. With my daughter here now I am working to get scholarships to make sure I can achieve my goals. My goal is to become an art teacher and help children find their own passions in art and introducing them to creative learning. I will be going to school for a degree in education and in fine arts.

Carlos F. Garcia Muentes Scholarship
I was born in Sonora, Mexico and at only 3 years old was brought to the United States to start a whole new life when my life was just beginning. My parents sought more opportunities than what was available in our small town.
My father stopped his studies at university and headed to Arizona ahead of us to find a home and a new job. He had found a small home for rent and had begun working as a mechanic for a friend of my grandfather that had already set up his business here.
As a first-time mom, my mother moved away from her family to join my father in the United States. We lived in a small blue home downtown where my mom would be the homemaker and a stay-at-home mom. I would start school and remember my mom walking me to school and helping me make crafts for school holiday projects. She would hand-make my Valentine’s box out of fabric and stuffing. She would also hand-stitch our stocking stuffers for Christmas. They were made out of felt and fabric and would have a Santa or frosty stitched on them.
After my brother was born my mom stopped having time to do all those crafts and take me to activities. But she would still make sure I had opportunities to immerse myself in creative classes. During summer vacations I would get to start the mornings with swim lessons and would go to a day camp right next door in the community center. I was able to take classes like art, singing, acting, and theater. These would help me find my creativity and found that I loved to do art. Once the day camp was over I would wait for my mom to pick me up at the local library that was also right next door to the community center. I would spend the hour reading different books and checking out whatever caught my eye. My mother helped me discover art and my love of reading and learning. I later followed in my mom’s footsteps and do crafts in my adulthood, but also moved on to paintings and ceramics.
Once my sister is born my dad starts looking into starting his own business. He had worked for a friend as a right hand for over 14 years and was overlooked for the manager position. He had enough and went on to open his own business. My father works 6 days a week for 10 hours a day. He helps all of us with our schooling and made sure we were prepared to be out on our own. His unconditional support provided me the safety to explore my goals and what I wanted to become.
Once high school ended I would go to college to get the prerequisite classes done but I was still unsure where I was headed. I had tried emergency medical technician, veterinary assistant, a biology scientist, but none worked out for me. After some time I had to stop taking classes at our local college due to my immigration status no longer being supported for in-state tuition. Classes would now cost me 3 times the amount as it previously did. I had gotten stuck in corporate America working an office job. That was until recently I started thinking about my own upbringing and what I actually wanted to do. I loved to learn, and I loved doing art. I am now working towards becoming an art teacher, so I can help others find their creativity in art as well.
