My name is Inkera Muwwakkil . I am a graduate student at Adler University, pursuing a master’s degree in Marriage & Family Therapy, a COAMFTE-accredited program. I am completing my final year and have been provided with excellent resources and tools to lead me into my career and complete my degree.
Becoming a product for change always seemed desirable, like a purpose I could embody for myself and my family. As a black girl in a small, predominantly white town in Missouri, becoming a therapist never felt within arm’s reach or even a shoe that a black girl should be filling. Before entering graduate school at Adler University for Marriage and Family Therapy, I had never seen a black therapist. Possibly since the thought of therapy was ostracized in my family and the black community. Yet, since high school, psychology has always struck a keen need for curiosity.
My self-identity would inform my lens of how I would contribute to mental health—ultimately to create more representation of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) within the field and aid in eliminating disparities. I have stepped into every field and goal with my entire heart wanting to make a change and leave a lasting impact.
I am ambitious to begin my formal training outside of the school walls and begin to practice and create programs, provide resources, and begin to close the access to mental health gap.

Hobbies Matter
One of my favorite hobbies is writing poetry, and it is my favorite art form that gives me a platform to express myself. I began writing in grade school, and even then, I knew it was a passion of mine. I have always feared sharing my work, but I have realized my hobby is actually something I am good at in these past few years. I am now working towards writing enough poems to develop my own poetry book that will illustrate the epitome of my artwork, and I want to display 100 to 200 poems and some photography of mine. This hobby, in a way, represents me as a person and allows me to release burdens of pain while also giving me space to share my joy. Poetry is a beautiful art form, and it is my favorite hobby I will continue with for the rest of my life.
Bold Creativity Scholarship
I aspire to push the scope of my own creative skills by getting into as many forms of art as possible. I've always been an aspiring poet and I just began to share my work. I hope to be a published poet by the end of 2022 and share my creative lens with the world. I've also gotten into photography taking nature photos and doing personal photoshoots I'm currently saving up to buy a cannon camera with a much better lens than the one I have now. Creativity is what has given us music, literature, art, poetry, etc. I pursue my passion by taking my hobbies and sharing them with the world. Although I am not pursuing a degree in anything associated with the creative skills I always want to make art it gives me a reason to feel safe in the world, it gives me a voice that I'm able to share.

Bold Joy Scholarship
Wen I think of the word “Joy” I think of peace and for me this represents my being. I was given the responsibility to bring hope and peace through my name “Inkera,” Don’t let the ideal of what you want to be stop you from living. The present is my joy and everyday I find a way to ensure I am Living in it for myself. Your joy is rooted in the freeness of self.
Letting lose of fears, things, and even people who are blocking that progress. My joy is with in my self care whether that’s taking time out to put a face mask on and watch my favorite movies; to going out and enjoying nature. My joy in life is living freely and living for the present moments in life. I’ve had time to grow hobbies such as taking photos and writing poetry that allow me to basque in the moment.
