As a black woman, I find myself surrounded by people who do not look like me on a daily basis. Alongside the feeling of looking different, I also feel that I am different because I am a lesbian. When I was 18 years old, I joined the military and became a paralegal specialist. I was a triple minority in the service, being a black, lesbian woman, and this continues to be true in my civilian career. There is a constant desire to be seen, understood, and related to, to feel like I have someone on my side. African Americans, People of Color, and the LGBTQAI+ community desperately need representation from people who share their backgrounds. We have the opportunity to be tried by a jury of our peers, but we also need the opportunity to be represented by someone who can relate to our story and background. I want to practice law to provide these under-represented communities with the best legal advice and representation. I want to inspire young women, especially in the aforementioned communities, to be strong, brave, and intelligent, and help those around them to be the same. No one should feel that the cards are already stacked against them when fighting to maintain their innocence or fighting any legal battle. I want people to feel not only that they are understood, but that I care about their battle as if it were my own, because we are alike. Representation matters deeply, and I am committed to being the voice for those whose stories need to be heard, those who feel like they are not seen or understood. Throughout history, these communities have faced systemic barriers that make it difficult for their voices to be heard and their rights to be protected. My goal is to provide a platform for these voices, to fight for justice, and to bring about positive change in the legal system. I believe that everyone deserves fair and equal treatment under the law, regardless of their race, gender, sexual orientation, or any other identifying factor. By pursuing a career in law, I aim to be an advocate for justice and ensure that all individuals have access to proper legal representation. I refuse to let the challenges I have faced define me; instead, I will use them as fuel to drive my passion for creating a more just and inclusive society. My personal and professional experiences have shaped my perspective and strengthened my resolve to become a compassionate and effective advocate. I am dedicated to empowering others and making a meaningful impact in the lives of those who have been overlooked or marginalized. Through my work, I hope to inspire positive changes, promote empathy, and contribute to a legal system that truly serves and uplifts everyone.
