I hope to influence the issue of mental health within the BIPOC community. Already within my time in high school, I have been an active member of a community organization called Zero Reasons Why. The organization strives to end the stigma surrounding mental health and also help prevent teen suicides. Through this, I have been able to give a voice as an African American woman on the cultural myths surrounding mental health and help the community reach out to BIPOC more to help them. I have also worked with a small group of people to create my own organization called Safe To Be POC. With the program, we surveyed high schoolers within my surrounding community how their mental health was being impacted due to being a person of color and a vast majority said that they had felt very isolated and also like there were no resources for them specifically. In hearing this, we chose to create a safe space for high schoolers of color to come together within the community ad also a website for them to be able to access easy resources to help them with problems that are race/ethnicity-specific. While I hope this has made an impact on POC within my area, I will continue this work throughout my life if given the opportunity. In college, I will major in psychology and minor in film. My career choices right now stand to be either a clinical psychologist or a psychological consultant for film and TV. However, the desire for either profession stems from the want to help marginalized communities. If I decide to become a clinical psychologist, I want to give marginalized communities a resource, whether that's just me or a whole firm, that is easy to access and cheaper. If I choose to become a psychological consultant for film and TV, I will work with actors or screenwriters so that mental health crises, especially those that come from race/ethnicity-related incidents, are not represented. Regardless of my future profession, I plan to create a non-profit with my brother who is a clinical psychologist. Within this non-profit, low-income people will have a community safe space where they can be educated about their health, both mental and physical, and also receive healthcare at a lower cost. Overall, if I have any influence at all surrounding mental health, I hope that I make an impact for the better for my own people.
