My name is Hannah Jones, I am a student-athlete, a member of National Honors Society, and a friend to any. I have decided to have a career in the healthcare field to become a nurse; specifically one in oncology. I am in a class to become a certified nurses aid by the time I graduate high school. I also volunteer at my local hospital and food bank. I am also an active member in my church. I am part of a legacy program where I go to the elementary school and mentor younger students and help them with classwork. This is my second year participating in this program, and I absolutely love it. I am put in the school to make a positive impact on these kids, and when I question myself as a leader and walk in the classroom, I am reminded that these kids are thrilled to see me walk in their class. These kids made an impact on me and I can see the positive changes in their lives because of me. I have decided to become a nurse because when I was younger my grandfather was constantly in the hospital battling cancer. The nurses that would take care of him would also console me when treatments were rough on him. Those nurses were like a second family to me, and we went through thick and thin together. I have decided I want to pursue nursing because of the impact other nurses made on me. They did their job to the best of their ability, and still had time to connect with their patients on a personal level. Nursing is not an easy major, but there is nothing worth more than the smiles of people when they have someone they can count on. Nursing is not an easy job and it definitely is not for the weak of heart. These people make such an impact on their community, and help bring together individuals during time of need. I plan on being the nurse I needed in my past. I needed someone to be there for me when i was younger and my grandpa was going through tough times medically, and as a nurse I will strive to be that person to every one of my patients. I aspire to make a difference in as many lives as possible, and I feel the best way is through the healthcare field. During anguished times, the nurses that the patients see every day have the opportunity to bring some light into the darkness. It is easy for people to lose hope during tough times, and all it takes is one person to bring a glimmer of hope to these people. I strive to be the glimmer of hope for as many people as possible. Since this hope was demonstrated to me by a nurse at such a young age, my desire is to be the same person I needed at that time of despair.

My community's availability and access to basic needs should be higher. Parents are having a more difficult time providing necessities to their children. Groceries are scarce for these students during the weekends. One way to help relieve the stress is by giving these children bags of food to take home during the weekend and breaks from school when meals are not provided for them regularly. I help create and distribute these bags through my church. We pay for the food ourselves, and the food is entirely free of charge for the children who need it. Almost every Wednesday night, I will go up to a building with some friends and fill bags with food to give to the less fortunate kids in our community. We serve it full of foods they can eat during the weekend when their next meal is not promised, like at school. We include something for every meal, including small boxes of cereal for breakfast, microwavable meals and canned foods for lunches and dinners, and applesauce and other things as snacks. When there is an upcoming break, such as winter break, we will put more food in the bag to last the kids the whole vacation instead of just a weekend. We pack these bags for a couple of hours every Wednesday night. There is no age restriction for the students who can obtain a bag. Sometimes we deliver the bags ourselves to the kids and see the relief fill their faces knowing they will have food over the weekend. These kids are less fortunate than others, and I am giving back to my community, ensuring that these kids do not have to worry about when or where they will eat next. Many of these children would starve all weekend until breakfast Monday morning. These kids are very thankful for the bags we hand out, and everyone in this program would continue to partake regardless of how the children respond. Being a part of this has made me see my community differently; some have different opportunities than I do. I am thankful for what I have and try to give back to my community in the most beneficial ways. When I leave my hometown and begin my own life, I will try to start a similar program or participate in a program if it is already established. This is a beautiful way to get to know your community's people and help those in need. I am very thankful for the opportunity to give back to my community.
    Sports Lover Scholarship
I have played many sports, including basketball, volleyball, softball, soccer, and track and field. However, the most impactful sport has been softball. Participating in softball throughout high school has taught me many valuable lessons. Being a part of a team teaches you many things such as responsibility, discipline, and hard work. More specifically, by being a part of my softball team I have learned how to get along with others, be a team player, and take charge. On every team, some people are always hard to get along with, regardless of what kind of team it is, whether it is an athletic team, coworkers, or a spiritual team. Working together despite differences in opinions is crucial in a functional group. It can be exhausting to get along with everyone, but in order for your team to thrive, engaging in the task and involving everyone is crucial. I learned this skill at a young age, and I continue to improve on this skill. Being a team player means knowing what is best for the team, regardless of how it affects you. Sometimes the team does not need an all-star player, they just need someone in the dugout who will encourage and support everyone playing. In my sophomore year of high school, I was a pinch runner. Even though I wanted to play on the field, I knew my team needed me to run the bases for our catcher. I worked hard over the summer, and I became the starting right fielder the following year. This experience taught me to put the team first and that nothing is out of reach if I want something and work hard for it. It was also critical for me to learn how to be an effective leader. Being a leader and knowing how to take charge without overstepping boundaries is a skill that takes time and practice. Unfortunately, it also comes with your mistakes being highlighted for everyone to see, and an adequate leader knows how to take responsibility for his/her mistakes while holding everyone else accountable. A team without a leader is just a group of people with no direction, like sheep without a shepherd. It is important that someone steps up to the challenge to lead the team to victory or to play to their best ability. I am so thankful for the opportunity and ability to play softball and learn life skills early in my life. I learned how to work well with everyone, be a team player, and important leadership skills.

I was in a PALS class in my junior and senior years, where you were given a younger child to mentor. These children often came from broken families or had learning disabilities. The kid assigned to me my junior was about ten years old and full of energy all of the time. He was a fun kid and was always trying to make everyone laugh. I spent an hour working with him twice a week. It was rewarding for both of us. He would wish me luck whenever I had a softball game, and I would reciprocate it by wishing him luck or bringing him a Gatorade before one of his football or basketball games. At the end of the year, I told my pal when our last day together was, and he was sad that we would not get to see each other again. He told me he was the luckiest person in PALS to have me as a pal and that he would miss me. I was put in that program to make a difference in a kid's life, and without a doubt, I know I did; however, I did not expect to have a kid half my age make such a difference in my life. This boy changed my outlook on life and constantly reminded me how important it is to stay positive regardless of your situation. Since this experience, I have strived to always have a smile on my face and always to be the person you can go to when you need a laugh. I always try to have a positive attitude. Since this experience, I have taken this mentality into all aspects of my life, in church, school, and sports. I am a positive role model to the younger members of these groups. I hope that by being a light, they will attempt to be the same for someone else, which will help the community thrive. One person's positivity will go a long way, and sometimes the best way to brighten someone else's day is simply having a smile on their face and being kind and polite. The key to improving the community is to start with one person at a time. I was changed by a boy almost half my age, which shows no age restriction on spreading joy. Being kind can be done by anyone, anywhere, and it will go a long way.

In my community, I want to see people being nicer to each other. I know it sounds simple, however, in order to unite people, kindness has to be present. My community is wonderful, yet people are mean to each other regardless of where you go. If everyone in the world was a little bit nicer to everyone around them, many problems would begin to deteriorate, including depression, anxiety, and anger. I make sure I always have a smile on my face, and I make sure to always say something kind to everyone I talk to. Being nice is such an overlooked concept, that many people don't consciously think about. Everyone could make a significant difference in others lives if we were nicer to each other through our actions and words.

My hunger to succeed comes from my parents. They raised me to work hard and that nothing comes free. My parents worked hard to get where they are today, and they instilled determination into me at a young age. Seeing how happy my parents are, makes me want that for myself. I know they worked hard for everything they have and that the only way for me to have that is to work hard and not stray away from my goals. I never give less than 100% in anything I do. All my studies are done with my best efforts, and if I fail, I will learn from my mistakes and succeed the next time. I am not always successful. However, failure does not define me; it only pushes me to work harder. I have been working hard for everything since a young age, and it is not an attribute that will deteriorate at any time.

Freedom is one of the main things that excites me for college. I will be free to be whoever I want to be and make my own choices about my health. I am a student- athlete so physical health has always been important to me. However, what most people don't realize is that there is so much more to having a healthy lifestyle than just working out and maintaining a physical shape or size. Maintaining your health in all forms is crucial while attending school. To avoid becoming burnt out, I make it a priority to include time to do things for myself. I like to have some free time to myself to relax and to keep from overworking myself. I work out everyday after school, and I participate in varsity softball. Both of these activities keeps me in shape and have excellent physical health. I make sure what I am putting into my body is good, and will not damage it in any way. I always have a well rounded meal for dinner, and I make it a priority to never skip breakfast. Eating in the morning can be tough to ensure, especially when class starts at 8:00, however eating a well rounded meal for breakfast every morning makes me feel better and more prepared for the day. Making sure to take rest days in order to let my muscles heal is a necessity. Taking rest days also helps the prevention of burnout.

When switching from junk food to healthy food there are significant changes to a person. An increase in energy, more optimistic outlook, and overall looking healthy are some of the advantages to eating right.

Coach Robinson has made the biggest impact on my life. He has been my softball coach since my sophomore year of high school, and he has always been there for me. He always cared about our well being and pushed us to our greatest potential. Coach Robinson demonstrated perseverance to his team. He never gave up on you to show you that you should not give up on yourself. He was always ready to give advise in any aspect of life, whether it was advise about a class, softball related, or even about things going on in your personal life. From Coach Robinson I have learned to push myself beyond my limits to achieve anything. I will exemplify this in the future by becoming a nurse and helping those who are in need. Coach Robinson is a great person and a wonderful coach. I am so thankful to have had him as a coach.

Leadership is an important quality one must possess to succeed in life. When I was a senior in high school, my team played in a recreation league in the fall. According to UIL rules, my coach was unable to coach until the season started, thus leaving a problem. A team without a coach is just a group of people with no order. I stepped up and took on the responsibility of coaching during the league. I would create lineups, make sure everyone knew when and where we were playing, and even hold practices while playing on the team myself and maintaining my grades in the classroom. Every Thursday night for almost two months, there was a game. I was always the first one there and the last one to leave to make sure everything went accordingly. Ensuring a fair amount of playing time for everyone was challenging, yet I made it happen. Everything you would see a team participating in, we were doing. Stretching before the game, appropriate warm-ups, and preparation were all considered and executed before every game. I had some help from my teammates when needed, such as coaching first base and reading the lineup when I was busy. Coaching this team was fun since I got to coach my friends, yet it was stressful. Being a coach is fun, but it also comes with its sacrifices. Extra stress and giving up my time and effort to ensure perfect preparation for the game every week are some of the many examples of sacrifice I have had since taking on the coaching role. Coaching my team is very rewarding in many ways. I learn how to be an effective and efficient leader. Since becoming the coach of my team, I have learned the importance of preparedness and teamwork. I wouldn’t change anything about this experience, and I am so blessed to have such a great team that pushes me to my full potential.

My favorite Disney character is Mulan because she was selfless and relentless. In order to protect her family and country, she risked her life. This shows leadership qualities all should aspire to possess. Mulan had friends and family that supported her through her journey, and she did not give up even when the world was telling her to. She was at the bottom of the totem pole, yet she worked hard everyday and eventually became the best in her class. Mulan never left a man behind, even when they did her wrong. She is so compassionate when it comes to the well being of others, especially when it is someone or something she cares deeply about.

I was in a PALS class in my junior year, where you were given a younger child to mentor. These children often came from broken families or had learning disabilities. The kid assigned to me was about ten years old and full of energy all of the time.
    Lifelong Learning Scholarship
Learning is important to me because the more you know the less room there is for mistakes. Being more educated means that you have a higher understanding of everything going on around you to make better decisions for yourself, for others, for your community, and event the world. After obtaining my Bachelor's degree, I plan on getting a job in the medical field where I can put my skills that I have learned into practice. In the working force, you learn something constantly. My education will never cease since I am planning on becoming a nurse. I will learn new skills and master others. Being a nurse, regardless of where or what kind, is and will always be educational.
    Learner Math Lover Scholarship
Math is a subject that always presents a challenge, and more often than not always has a definite answer. Math is always constant and the rules never change. No matter how advanced a class is, certain rules that were taught previously are always going to stay the same. There is always something new to learn in math and it gets more complex the higher up the class. No matter how many math classes are taken, students constantly learn something new in math.
    Dashanna K. McNeil Memorial Scholarship
I have chosen to pursue an education in nursing because of the impact others with the same occupation made on me. As a child my grandfather was constantly in the hospital battling cancer, and the nurses that would take care of him would also console me when treatments were rough on him.
