James B. McKillip Scholarship for Physical Therapy
Having been a physical therapy technician in a busy outpatient clinic for nearly three years, I can attest to the fact that no two days are the same. Whether I am showing a patient a new exercise in their rehabilitation program or taking on an administrative issue with a difficult patient, I have learned to be prepared for anything at any time. With that comes a healthy dose of confidence. Showing my patients that I am confident is key to building trust with diverse patient populations as both a tech and a future therapist. Additionally, assuring patients that you are rooting for them on their physical therapy journey is essential. I have experienced this overlap of physical and mental wellbeing in the clinic countless times over the years, but one patient, Sandy, made this connection very clear to me. Sandy was an older woman presenting with knee instability and vestibular issues, understandably making her fearful of falling. This took a toll on her, as she was afraid to walk without assistance. It took many sessions, but with lots of “Look how strong you are!”, “You’ve got this!”, and proving her strengths to her through functional activities, I witnessed true change in her. Every day I watched her stride get a bit faster and her smile a bit wider. At the end of her therapy, Sandy pulled me aside and let me know that it was my attentiveness, compassion, and positivity that motivated her to come to therapy. She also thanked me for my guidance and friendship which led her to become confident in herself. It is patients like Sandy that make me love the work I do and reassures me that I can make a difference in someone’s life. Making connections like the one I had with Sandy is integral to being a great physical therapist. Being a beacon of positivity in my patient’s life during a difficult time is something I do not take lightly. This impact will only become greater as I transition to the role of physical therapist. Championing all of my patients’ successes, big or small, while being sympathetic to their condition, no matter how far along they are on their physical therapy journey, is part of the foundation necessary for comprehensive and inclusive patient care. My experiences in being a top-performing physical therapy technician, and working with patient’s like Sandy, have provided defining moments for me in my decision to become a physical therapist. Learning to be confident in myself and my abilities has let my clientele know that they can trust me. Inherently being an attentive and compassionate individual while establishing genuine connections with others, no matter who they are or where they come from, has become a natural process. These traits I have cultivated over time will serve me and my patients as a physical therapist, and it is my hope to instill these traits into the new generation of physical therapists. I know that my passion for people and the wonderful machine that is the human body will be able to flourish as a future Doctor of Physical Therapy.
