My mother and stepfather are members of BACA here in DFW. Bikers against Child Abuse. Once a month I volunteer to help organize events that support the organizations rally’s around awareness of child abuse. I have learned that even as a young adult that there are kids out there that don’t have an outlet to report the abuse and some kids are afraid to report it since they most don’t know how. Volunteering is a way for all people to support organizations that don’t always have the financial resources for the manpower needed to support its mission. In the past I have also volunteered at local animal shelters and my softball teams have supported organizations that are affiliated with Special Olympics that bring kids to the ball field to play baseball. My team assisted with helping disabled kids with hitting and running around the bases. It helped me see that I have a gift that I have been given and give back to those that have special needs. I think people should volunteer if possible. For me, it gives the warm feeling knowing that I’m helping someone who may not be able to help themselves. There are a lot of ways that people can volunteer in the community. As previously mentioned, the Rockwall Pet Center is always looking for people to walk dogs. My grandfather used to volunteer at the senior center on Sundays to help with worship services. I used to go with him to deliver communion to senior citizens who were either in the hospital or at home who could not drive. Our community has several things like donating time at the library and museum where the city may not have the financial resources for the necessary manpower. Other city related volunteering could be serving on various boards and commissions that work to improve our community. There are many benefits of volunteering. Aside from the personal satisfaction that volunteering gives there are many other benefits of volunteering. Volunteering brings a sense of pride. It also develops relationships others in the community both with city leaders and its residents. It also an individual to gain first hand knowledge about the community and how it works and you get sense of pride of making a difference. Last but not least it can make a good impression on future employers. If they see you have an impact on your community they may feel that you will be an asset to a company.
