Billy Downey Memorial Agriculture Scholarship
Agriculture is very important to our community. Without it we as a community would not be as successful as a whole. Humans are extremely dependent on our food supply. Because of agriculture we don't have to worry about that as much. Agriculture supplies pretty much all of our food supply and we don't have to worry about it being unclean, spoiled, or having bacteria in it. Agriculture can also teach the importance of working hard. I have been part of FFA for about 5 years and showing animals at various shows and selling them for about 4 years. Doing that has taught me the importance of hard work and has taught me to be a better person with a good work ethic. Just simply being part of agriculture can create such a huge impact for yourself and other people you become involved with. I have noticed the great impact agriculture has on my community and how much it is needed in my everyday life. During my experience showing animals and selling them it has pushed me to learn more about the agriculture industry. As I have been learning about it more I want to become more involved and make an impact for future generations. Doing so I am going to be majoring in Veterinary sciences at Utah State. I hope that doing that and studying more into agriculture sciences as well I will make an impact in the agriculture world.
While agriculture supports our food supply it also impacts our natural resources. Our natural resources are not unlimited. They need intensive care and the agriculture community helps us with that. I did 2 science fair projects regarding natural resources. My first one was in 6th grade. I froze seeds to see if it would help the plants grow better. I earned an award at both school and district level. Then I went on to compete in the state level where I placed 3rd in Earth and Environmental sciences. My second project was for the Ag Science Competition for FFA. For that I used different types of water on plants to see if the different water types impacted the growth rate. I placed 2nd overall in Plant systems. After these projects I realized how much we need to protect these limited resources. It made me think just how hard the agriculture community has had to work over centuries to figure out the best way for things to grow to help everyone and just how dependent we are on agriculture. I also learned about a lot of the technology that different agriculture systems need to function and inventions that were created because of agriculture. Because of how much I have seen agriculture in my life I want to create an impact and share with others how important agriculture is.
