As I sat in the crowded waiting room of the doctor's office alongside my parents, a sense of frustration and helplessness washed over me. The fluorescent lights flickered above, illuminating the diverse faces that mirrored the struggles of immigrant families like mine. It was a defining moment that revealed the daunting obstacles my parents faced in accessing healthcare due to language barriers and a lack of support tailored to the needs of immigrants. Despite their best efforts to communicate, my parents found themselves lost in translation, struggling to convey their symptoms and understand the medical jargon that permeated the air. The doctor's hurried visits left unanswered questions and a lingering sense of unease, highlighting the dire need for more culturally sensitive and inclusive healthcare practices. This pivotal experience ignited a fire within me—a resolute determination to become a medical doctor who would dismantle these barriers and champion the cause of equitable healthcare access for immigrant communities. It sparked a fervent passion to bridge the gaps, to be the voice for those who felt unheard, and to ensure that no family had to endure the frustration and isolation my parents faced. My aspiration to become a medical doctor is driven by a deep-seated passion for healing, a profound sense of empathy, and an unwavering commitment to serving others, particularly within my immigrant community. Witnessing the challenges my Somali parents faced in navigating the healthcare system as immigrants has ignited a genuine desire within me to make healthcare more accessible and equitable for individuals from similar backgrounds. Growing up, I observed firsthand the struggles my parents encountered in seeking quality healthcare that aligned with their cultural and linguistic needs. These experiences exposed me to the systemic barriers that hinder access to care for immigrant communities, including language barriers, cultural disparities, and limited awareness of available resources. These realities have fueled my determination to become a medical doctor who can bridge these gaps and provide culturally sensitive care to underserved populations. Through my participation in social and charitable activities, I have actively engaged with my community by tutoring at local mosques, volunteering at healthcare clinics, and participating in initiatives aimed at increasing healthcare accessibility. These experiences have further solidified my commitment to improving healthcare outcomes for marginalized communities, empowering individuals to navigate the system effectively, and ensuring their voices are heard in their decision-making process. Moreover, my reading choices have extended beyond medical textbooks, encompassing narratives that shed light on the experiences of immigrants and the challenges they face in accessing healthcare. I actively engage with books that talk extensively about black mothers and the rising mortality rates they face while giving birth in the United States. These literary explorations have deepened my understanding of the multifaceted nature of healthcare disparities and the importance of tailored care for diverse populations. My journey as a future medical doctor is shaped by the experiences of my immigrant parents and the broader immigrant community. It is driven by a desire to dismantle barriers, champion inclusivity, and advocate for equitable healthcare access. By leveraging my skills, knowledge, and cultural understanding, I am committed to making a tangible difference in the lives of those who share similar experiences, ensuring that healthcare becomes a beacon of compassion, accessibility, and cultural sensitivity for all.

    1. In reflecting upon my journey as an individual, I find myself at the threshold of an exciting milestone: the completion of my high school years and the dawning of a new chapter in my life. I was born in the vibrant nation of South Africa; my immigration to the United States at the age of 10 has bestowed upon me a remarkable tale of adaptation and growth. As a black Muslim immigrant, my multicultural heritage weaves a rich tapestry of experiences that propels my dreams with unwavering tenacity. As the eldest sibling in a large and loving family, I have been entrusted with the profound responsibility of leading by example. These obligations have allowed me to develop a sense of duty, compelling me to rise above the ordinary and redefine the trajectory of my lineage. It is my goal to change my family’s narrative of being displaced refugees and sculpt a new story that resonates with success and accomplishment. If I could pursue any path in life, my dream would be to become a surgeon and dedicate myself to the field of healthcare. As a surgeon, I envision myself in the operating room, skillfully navigating the complexities of the human body, and providing surgical care with precision and compassion, with the opportunity to impact and improve lives. By embracing the challenges and demands of this rigorous field, I would strive to contribute to the advancement of medical science, enhance patient outcomes, and play a vital role in shaping the future of healthcare. 2. What excites me about STEM is its profound potential to revolutionize the world we live in. In particular, the intersection of technology and healthcare. As someone passionate about health and the well-being of individuals, I am fascinated by the prospect of leveraging information technology (IT) to make a positive impact on the world. By combining my enthusiasm for health with the power of IT, I envision fostering transformative advancements in healthcare delivery and patient outcomes. IT has the capacity to streamline processes, enhance data analysis, and facilitate seamless communication among healthcare professionals, ultimately improving the quality and efficiency of care, especially for patients of color, who are at risk most often. From developing innovative health applications to implementing electronic medical records systems, there are countless opportunities to harness technology in ways that optimize patient experiences and contribute to the betterment of global healthcare systems. Moreover, as a future healthcare practitioner in information technology, I am driven by the desire to bridge the gap between technology and healthcare, facilitating the integration of cutting-edge solutions into clinical practice. By collaborating with different teams, I can contribute my expertise in IT as well as healthcare to develop tools, such as the expansion of telemedicine platforms or health monitoring devices, that extend the reach of healthcare to underserved populations and enhance the accessibility of vital services. By utilizing information technology, I aim to pioneer innovative solutions that enhance patient care, improve access to vital services, and contribute to the overall well-being of individuals worldwide. 3. One of the greatest challenges I have confronted is navigating the complexity of multiple identities and finding a sense of belonging within each of them. As a black Muslim woman that is an immigrant from South Africa, my journey has been shaped by a variety of cultural, religious, and national influences, each contending for recognition and validation. The struggle to reconcile these multifaceted aspects of my identity and find a place where I truly belong has been difficult. To overcome this challenge, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery. I explored my rich heritage, immersing myself in its traditions, values, and histories that define me. This exploration helped me find commonalities among my diverse identities, realizing that they can coexist harmoniously within me. I actively sought communities and individuals who shared similar experiences and perspectives. Connecting with them fostered a sense of belonging and kinship. Ultimately, I realized that the strength of my identity lies not in conforming to societal expectations or fitting into predetermined boxes, but in embracing the richness and complexity of my diverse heritage. By embracing my multiple identities with pride and authenticity, I have forged a path of self-acceptance and belonging that defies boundaries and fosters inclusivity. This ongoing journey has taught me that true belonging emanates from within and radiates outward, empowering others to embrace their own unique identities with courage and confidence. Society's expectations challenge my sense of self, and new layers of identity emerge as I continue to grow.

As a Somali-American immigrant, my experiences have shown me the lack of representation in STEM fields. Diverse representation in STEM careers is essential for a variety of reasons. Firstly, having diverse representation in STEM brings different perspectives, experiences, and ideas to the table. This diversity of thought can lead to more innovative and inclusive solutions. For example, a team composed of individuals from different cultural backgrounds may approach a problem from different angles, leading to a more comprehensive solution. Diverse representation also helps to break down stereotypes and biases and can serve as role models for underrepresented groups. Additionally, having people from diverse backgrounds in STEM can help to create a more welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone. This is particularly important for underrepresented groups, such as women, people of color, and low-income individuals, who often face additional barriers to entering and succeeding in STEM fields. When individuals from these groups see people like themselves in STEM careers, it can serve as a powerful motivator and inspiration. Furthermore, having diverse representation in STEM can also help to increase the number of people from diverse backgrounds entering STEM fields. When individuals from underrepresented groups see people like themselves succeeding in STEM careers, they may be more likely to pursue similar paths. This can help to create a more equitable and just society, where everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed in their chosen field. I can personally attest to the importance of diverse representation in STEM careers. Growing up in South Africa and coming to the US at the age of ten, I hardly saw anyone that looked like me in the medical field. This lack of representation made me feel as though I did not belong in the field and made it difficult for me to envision myself in a STEM career. However, as I got older, I began to see more and more people from diverse backgrounds in STEM careers and that changed everything for me. Seeing individuals who looked like me succeeding in STEM gave me the confidence to pursue my dreams and helped me to understand that I too could succeed in this field. It means a lot to see someone who looks like you, who shares similar backgrounds and struggles, succeed in a field that may have been previously closed off to them. It gives hope, inspiration, and confidence that you can do it too. In conclusion, diverse representation in STEM careers is crucial for fostering a more equitable and just society. It brings different perspectives, experiences, and ideas to the table which can lead to more innovative and inclusive solutions. Diverse representation helps to break down stereotypes and biases and can serve as role models for underrepresented groups. Additionally, it helps to create a more welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone, and can also help to increase the number of people from diverse backgrounds entering STEM fields.
