Ever since I was twelve years old, my life goal has been to become a veterinarian. Specifically, I am interested in small or exotic animal care. I am attending the University of Oregon Clark Honors College and majoring in Biology. My other academic interests include law and marine biology. Thus I am pursuing a minor in law studies and attaching an emphasis in marine biology to my major by spending a term at the Charleston Marine Life Center. I have a passion for lacrosse and have been playing since first grade. I am continuing to play lacrosse as a practice player for the University of Oregon Women's Club Lacrosse team. I was in first grade, perched on the end of the chair in front of our family computer, staring at the screen. That was the first time I saw what a lacrosse stick looked like. A few days later I bought my first stick. I’ll be forever grateful to my younger self for choosing a sport that has taught me so much. Lacrosse has shaped me into someone who represents teamwork, discipline, and commitment.
Throughout middle school and the start of high school, I struggled with anxiety. This meant going to practice wasn't always easy. I was scared of making mistakes, especially in front of others. But I didn’t quit, I was committed to the sport and my team. I kept playing and practicing, and I built up my skills and confidence. I’m still playing in my Junior year, and I’m committed to becoming a better player. Off the field, I’m committed to my goal of becoming a veterinarian. I was twelve when I first said I wanted to be a veterinarian. To reach my goal I've shadowed and talked with veterinarians, and attended an OSU veterinary camp. I’m committed to making my dream a reality through my own hard work.
In my mind, commitment and discipline go hand in hand. My discipline gives my commitment value. Even after a long day at school, I still show up to practice. Missed a chance at a goal in a game? Extra practice is the solution, now I won't miss the next one. I display discipline through small acts, such as passing someone else the ball because they have a better chance at a goal. My discipline on the field is mirrored in my school life. I push myself to take AP courses and work hard even if it's above the requirements. I’ve embodied discipline by taking rigorous classes and always challenging myself throughout high school.
If lacrosse wasn’t a team sport, I wouldn’t have met some of the best teammates I’ve ever had. Getting to play and be coached by our small group has taught me a lot about working together. As an attack player, I know how important working with my teammates is to our success. On the field I use communication, talking and working with my teammates to keep us connected verbally. Responsibility is an important part of what teamwork means to my team and I. This means being where I’m supposed to be on the field and taking credit for all my actions, good or bad.
Teamwork is a big part of my other interests and commitments outside of lacrosse. I’ve been in girl scouts since elementary school, and I’m working towards my gold award which is the highest achievement a scout can earn. In order to start working on my gold award, I had to complete multiple service projects with a group, including food and clothing drives we organized together. Communicating and collaborating with others is what made them possible. I’m also my school's National Art Honor Society social media manager, which requires me to use my teamwork skills during and outside of meetings. As a social media manager, my job is to collaborate and communicate with my society to create our public image.
Throughout all aspects of my life, I have showcased commitment, teamwork, and discipline. lacrosse has strengthened these core values throughout my years of playing and taught me their importance. These traits are part of what makes me unique, and I will continue to embody them throughout the rest of my lacrosse career and my life.
