Bio

I am a first-generation college student pursuing a bachelor's degree at Laguna College of Art and Design, specializing in Game Art with a focus on visual effects. Recently, I have developed a strong passion for visual effects, finding joy in creating immersive elements such as lightning, explosions, and magical abilities for games. I am currently honing my skills to prepare for opportunities in independent studios next year. Through my journey, from community college to my current undergraduate program, I have evolved into a well-rounded artist capable of creating 2D designs, conceptualizing and executing 3D concepts, crafting character backstories, and integrating storytelling into my artwork. As a gamer, I play many games with great storytelling and innovative gameplay. I hope to design a game with my own storytelling and game design. In addition to my academic pursuits, I have engaged in community service at a local church, where I contributed to nurturing children's positive mindsets. I have also volunteered with the American Red Cross, assisting in blood donation drives. These experiences have uplifted me and ignited a desire to make a difference in the lives of others. Drawing from these personal encounters, I aspire to inspire individuals facing financial hardships to pursue their dreams. Through my video game narratives, which explores themes of trauma, despair, hope, love, and unity, I aim to encourage others to persevere despite challenges.

My educational journey began with a passion for video games, leading me to pursue a degree in the entertainment industry. Growing up, when video games were increasingly popular, I naturally developed a passion for this new form of entertainment. Witnessing my older brothers graduate from college and secure trade jobs motivated me to follow in their footsteps, combining my love for video games with a solid academic foundation. In the future, I plan to channel my creativity and experience into developing my own video game. This project will utilize my visual effects, character design, and world-building skills, which are everything I learned in college. It will feature a narrative that draws from my personal experiences and the theme of perseverance. By maintaining a career as a VFX artist, I can support myself while working on this passion project, ensuring the resources and stability to bring my vision to life. I was inspired to write a narrative during my time serving the community. Meeting others and seeing how much of an impact you can have has pivoted towards inspiring others through video games. In high school, I assisted a local church in events and taught a sermon to kids about the importance of faith. I expected some difficulty in getting the kids interested in the sermon, but I was surprised by how eager they were to learn. They were engaged in the lesson, asked plenty of good questions, and made teaching fun. I noticed how much curiosity kids tend to have. Young audiences can pivot in the right direction with suitable moral lessons. Now that video games are at the forefront of entertainment, making a narrative-based video game experience would be perfect to reach out to young audiences and encourage them to follow their passion. I can focus on my career and personal projects sooner with the money raised from this scholarship. Worrying about the cost of education has always held me back from improving my skills as an art student. I needed more time and focus to practice drawing skills and learn from online tutorials. However, since I am paying for my education alone, I must work many hours during the summer and school to help me afford food, transportation, and supplies. Despite the difficulties, I have accomplished some things as a first-generation art student. In my pursuit to graduate from a private college while following my passion, some of my visual effects work is present in a public escape room game and an independent video game. I have designed user interfaces for a spaceship-themed escape room project and created visual effects for an upcoming video game. In doing so, I succeeded in being a part of the entertainment industry by producing work as an aspiring artist. Growing up in an immigrant family, paying for college and a car alone, and navigating college toward the games industry, I made significant accomplishments among my family members. These experiences serve as a source of inspiration and empowerment for others facing similar struggles, proving that it is possible to overcome obstacles and achieve one's dreams with determination and support. Next year, I will graduate with a Bachelor's degree and begin applying for positions in the entertainment industry. I will work as a VFX artist, and with my passion project, I can create compelling and meaningful video game experiences. I aim to impact players deeper, encouraging them to see the value in their stories and struggles. The support of this scholarship would help me pay down private student loans and enable me to focus on my passions.

I grew up when video games were increasingly popular, naturally developing a passion for this new form of entertainment. I aspired to build a career in the entertainment industry. Witnessing my older brothers graduate from college and secure trade jobs motivated me to pursue higher education, combining my passion for video games with an academic foundation. As my parents could not work and relied on welfare to make ends meet, I knew I needed to pay for college independently. I started at community college to make my education more affordable while developing my skills as an artist. During this time, I got inspired by Toby Fox, the independent game developer who created "Undertale." He programmed, designed, and composed music for his game, and I wanted to achieve something similar. Concept art seemed like the ideal path to achieve my goal of developing a video game with uniquely designed characters, worlds, and environments. Upon transferring to an undergraduate school, I faced significant financial burdens and had to take out loans for the first time. Initially, I was studying to become a concept artist, but I soon realized how highly competitive that field was. The rise of artificial intelligence further complicated matters. As the industry began pivoting towards generative AI, causing uncertainties about the future of concept design. This shift encouraged me to explore visual effects as a more viable career choice. I enjoyed designing elements like sword slashes and magical effects, which aligned well with my artistic skills and career aspirations. I realized I could work as a VFX artist in the industry while developing my passion project in my free time. To improve my narrative skills, I watched numerous movies, and television shows, and played video games to understand game design. This approach is how well-known game developers like Hideo Kojima and Naoki Yoshida have found success. Leveraging the internet, I have already started writing for two of my characters, utilizing online resources to gain multiple skills. Being a first-generation student has profoundly affected my life and career goals. Navigating the world of higher education without parental guidance has been challenging, but it has also instilled a sense of resilience and independence in me. Pursuing a career in game development allows me to combine my passion for art and storytelling with the opportunity to inspire others. By creating compelling and meaningful video game experiences, I aim to impact players on a deeper level, encouraging them to see the value in their own stories and struggles. While I work towards that goal, I can sustain myself as a VFX artist and support my family financially, relieving them of the burdens that have weighed heavily on our shoulders.

I understood the sacrifices my parents made for me late in life. I later realized that migrating from Mexico to the United States offered us a chance at a better life. However, the American dream often feels elusive with rising education and housing costs. Despite our struggles, there is hope if I pursue my passion and overcome challenges. My family's immigrant journey and the obstacles I faced as a first-generation student inspired me to write a video game narrative reflecting my trials and tribulations. I aspire to encourage others facing similar struggles to follow their ambitions and find their definitions of success, no matter how challenging the journey. I am motivated by how difficult it was for my parents to cross the border. After making it across, they were fortunate to stay with family while obtaining green cards and finding work. They had enough money to get by but no guarantee of success. With almost no plan, they achieved a lot. My siblings and I grew up in the United States, learned English and Spanish, and graduated from high school. Two of my older siblings have moved out after obtaining their degrees. They pursued high-demand trade jobs and relocated to states where they could live comfortably. Their success motivated me to pursue higher education, but I wanted to go further. I aspired to enter the entertainment industry due to my passion for video games. I wanted a career that allowed me to express my creativity in the entertainment industry. Pursuing a career in game development allows me to combine my passion for art and storytelling with the opportunity to inspire others. By creating compelling and meaningful video game experiences, I aim to impact players on a deeper level, encouraging them to see the value in their own stories and struggles. This journey has not been easy, but I am set to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree next year. I have come this far with the encouragement of family and friends. Learning about my parents’ struggles, I wanted to honor their sacrifices. By securing a stable and fulfilling career, I can support my family financially, relieving them of the burdens that have weighed heavily on our shoulders. Demoralizing situations, such as struggling to pay for school, not knowing if I can continue, and fearing failure, can inspire hope in others facing similar challenges. My parents accomplished enough for me to pursue my passion. I am motivated by how much they struggled to achieve even more with the resources available to me here.

Education has the power to break the cycle of poverty that has held my family back for generations. My parents never studied beyond high school and immigrated to the United States to allow us those opportunities. By attending Laguna College of Art and Design and majoring in Game Art, I am setting myself on a career that blends my passion for creativity with the practical need for financial stability. I want a career in the entertainment industry where I can inspire audiences and uplift their spirits through video game experiences. Working in the entertainment industry will also allow me to support my family and ease the struggles. My experiences, such as taking out private loans for school, living paycheck-to-paycheck, and witnessing generative artificial intelligence threatening creative jobs, will inform a video game project that inspires hope in others facing similar challenges. As a game art student, I have designed the characters, their outfits, the props, and the worlds visually. In time, I will learn to compose music that sets the mood and immerses the player. The underlying theme of my project is overcoming fears and adversity, a reflection of my journey. One captivating aspect of the project features a DJ character, resurrected by her mother, drawing inspiration from Frankenstein's tale but with a more uplifting twist - where music imbues life with purpose. In crafting this character, the core message aims to inspire audiences to find meaning in their lives, regardless of their circumstances. Her underlying fear revolves around acceptance, yet she uses music to unite people and embrace the joy of living. Her music can soothe minds or bring up the mood with upbeat melodies. Besides this character, other characters in this project embody the many fears I have faced during my lifetime. I will show how I work through them. Pursuing a higher education has allowed me to bring my creative visions to life. By blending personal experience with professional ambition, I am committed to using my art to make a positive difference. In return, I will be able to support my family and honor the sacrifices they have made. With unwavering passion and dedication, I aim to create a video game that sparks wonder and inspiration. By blending art, music, and immersive storytelling, I hope to transport them to enchanting worlds, fostering introspection and personal growth. Through diverse characters and thought-provoking narratives, I aspire to leave a lasting, positive impact, encouraging players to work through their fears and overcome obstacles.

From an early age, I have been captivated by the power of storytelling in video games. So, I aspired to work in the entertainment industry. I went to college to study character and creature design, figure drawing, and painting. I wanted to write a narrative for a personal video game in the future using my own characters and world. However, this passion turned into working towards becoming a visual effects artist. My journey toward this field was affected by various factors, including the rise of artificial intelligence and industry layoffs, which have underscored the need for adaptability and resilience in my career choice. Initially, I wanted to become a concept artist or visual development artist, designing characters, worlds, and props. However, I soon realized that this field is highly competitive and not in high demand. This realization, coupled with the financial burden of student loans, prompted me to explore other avenues within the industry. After taking a visual effects class, I discovered a new passion when I had fun creating sword slashes, magical explosions, and laser beams for games. The experience was both exhilarating and enlightening, showing me a path where my creative talents could flourish and where there was a strong demand for skilled professionals. Choosing visual effects as my career allows me to combine my love for art and storytelling in a practical and impactful way. VFX artists work with animators and concept artists to create immersive experiences. As I learn from others, I aspire to contribute to this dynamic field by designing visually stunning effects that enhance gameplay and storytelling. My ultimate goal is to work on projects that entertain and resonate with players on a deeper level. In the future, I plan to channel my creativity and experience into developing my own video game. This project will culminate my skills in VFX, character design, and world-building, featuring a narrative that draws from my personal experiences and the theme of perseverance. By maintaining a career as a VFX artist, I can support myself while working on this passion project, ensuring I have the resources and stability to bring my vision to life. Achieving these goals will allow me to make a significant impact in the gaming industry and beyond. I want to inspire others, especially those facing obstacles like AI disruption and economic instability, to follow their passions and adapt to changing circumstances. By sharing my story and work, I hope to encourage aspiring artists to pursue and overcome challenges and adapt to something they would still be happy with. In conclusion, my pursuit of a career in VFX is driven by a deep-seated passion for art and storytelling, combined with a pragmatic approach to navigating the challenges of the industry. Through my work, I aim to create captivating experiences, inspire others, and contribute to a more diverse and vibrant artistic community. This scholarship will be instrumental in helping me achieve these goals and make a lasting impact in my chosen field.

Video games are becoming the forefront of entertainment, surpassing films and television. They offer a superior form of escapism and innovate in storytelling and engagement. Hundreds of passionate gamers and artists, including myself, pursue careers creating immersive experiences for the world. As a first-generation college student, I plan to write and illustrate a video game story to inspire the next generation of artists and gamers. The rise of AI art and sweeping industry layoffs have made the future uncertain. It would be understandable to consider a different career not threatened by artificial intelligence. However, I do not have that choice. I have one year left before graduating with a bachelor's degree, and I have invested too much in my art to give up now. I will push forward, designing characters, outfits, props, and worlds. I will draw from my life, with perseverance as a central theme. In my story, a young girl who is a witch loses both her parents and faces the threat of destruction. Her obstacles are immense, with her background stacking the odds against her. Fortunately, she meets friends who support her throughout her journey. While the story is still in development, its core lesson comes from my experience of having no choice but to make the best of a challenging situation. I am blessed to have family and friends who support me. There have been many times when I felt like giving up due to the rising cost of education, industry layoffs, and the impact of AI. However, I still have the opportunity to make my dream work. When I publish my story within a video game, I aim to motivate others not to turn away from their passionate careers but to see things through to the end, even under daunting circumstances. My ultimate goal is to contribute to a diverse and inclusive artistic community where everyone has the chance to express their creativity. By sharing my story and experiences, I hope to inspire others to persevere and pursue their dreams, regardless of obstacles. Artificial intelligence lacks human experiences. Through my art, I want to show that our backgrounds and challenges can become sources of strength and inspiration, leading to a rich, more vibrant world of storytelling and creativity.

Pursuing higher education can be transformative, especially for first-generation college students like myself. Despite financial challenges and societal expectations to follow traditional career paths, my passion for video games guided me toward the entertainment industry. My greatest achievement has been reaching my senior year in game art at Laguna College of Art and Design, with professional work featured in independent video games. This journey has shaped my future and demonstrated the profound impact of following one’s passion despite socioeconomic barriers. One of the most challenging parts of forging your path is figuring everything out yourself. Fortunately, my college provided a clear list of classes needed to complete my field of study. Initially, I aimed to become a concept artist, designing characters and props for video games. However, professors taught me that concept art jobs are highly competitive and not in high demand. Disappointed but undeterred, I searched for alternatives, spending six years in community college exploring coding, animation, 3D modeling, and visual effects before transferring to an undergraduate program. I never anticipated studying so broadly and gaining such a varied skill set. Coding improved my attention to detail, and visual development enhanced my creativity. Motivated by my fear of failure and lack of financial support from my parents, I knew I had to excel in my classes. Whether it was mastering UI design, smooth animation, or character iteration, I succeeded in each field. By then, I noticed my ability to persevere in different fields of study. It had uplifted my spirits and gauged my chances of success. To this day, I have not failed any college classes. This perseverance led to my greatest achievement: reaching my senior year in game art and featuring my work in independent video games. In one class, I created UI and VFX for a popular escape room experience using a game engine. This project allowed me to achieve part of my goal to enter the entertainment industry. With newfound confidence, I aspire to write my own stories using characters I created during my college career. Through my experiences as a first-generation college student, I have themes of purpose, responsibility, grief, dread, and parenting to draw from. As an author, I hope to inspire others who are low-income, BIPOC, or struggling students to pursue their passions as I have. No matter how difficult things may seem, perseverance and dedication can make it work. Reflecting on my journey, I am proud of the resilience and dedication that have brought me to this point. My achievements in studying game art show that following intimidating paths leads to great rewards if you persevere. As I look to the future, I am excited to continue creating and inspiring others through my work. I am determined to support my family, break the cycle of financial hardship, and serve as a role model for other first-generation college students. With one year left in my undergraduate program, I am committed to preparing myself for a successful career in the entertainment industry.
    Level Up Scholarship
Video games have shaped my future and set me apart from my family and friends. While my brothers pursued trades for their high pay, I chose a passionate career in the entertainment industry. Growing up when video games were becoming very popular, I naturally gravitated toward them, often drawing my favorite characters. Video games have significantly contributed to my personal and academic growth by enhancing my social skills, creativity, and critical thinking. The imaginative worlds of games like The Legend of Zelda and God of War have sparked my passion for creating immersive experiences. Designing levels, characters, and stories within games inspired me to explore art and animation. I spent countless hours drawing video game characters and envisioning my game concepts. For example, looking at the variety of Pokémon designs with their different shapes, sizes, and color theory, you would see many ways to design your creatures. This creative outlet helped me develop skills in visual storytelling and design. For social skills, there are multiplayer games where you meet people and work together to win matches. Games such as Halo, with its online multiplayer mode, placed me in situations where teamwork with strangers was essential to win matches. Capturing flags, eliminating enemy teams, and holding zones required open communication and cooperation. This experience translated into real-life scenarios at school and work. For instance, when I encountered an issue with a user interface in a game engine, I communicated the problem to my team, and a teammate stepped in to resolve it. The team was delighted that I had brought up issues instead of suffering in silence. Situations such as these bring me confidence in my performance in the industry. For my career, I am pursuing visual effects. I believe it will be a fun endeavor since animation and designing visual effects add flare to a game. For example, Dragon Ball Z would not be Dragon Ball without Ki blasts and explosions. I enjoyed creating effects like explosions, psychic blasts, and sword slashes. All these things kept me playing video games as a kid. I would love to create similar experiences for others. Video games have provided me with entertainment but have also played a significant role in my personal and academic growth. They have enhanced my social skills, fueled my creativity, and guided my career path. I want my passion project to inspire others just as video games have inspired me. I will utilize everything I have learned to help craft the narrative, character designs, and the world. As I continue my journey in the entertainment industry, I am grateful for the lessons and inspiration video games have given me, setting me on a path to a passionate career.
    John J Costonis Scholarship
As a first-generation Hispanic student aspiring to pursue a career in the entertainment industry, achieving success often feels like an elusive fantasy. Growing up in a low-income family with immigrant parents from Mexico, the financial challenges I face loom large. Circumstances have led me to seek a position in visual effects for games. Seeing how visual effects artists are in high demand in the industry, I work hard towards building up my skills as an artist to help myself and my family financially. At the same time, I am working on a passion project that is my lifelong goal. My journey into higher education began without the financial support of my parents. Being among the first in my family to pursue a college degree, I found myself navigating unfamiliar terrain without the benefit of strategies for academic success. As I progress in my education, I find it hard to manage my time since I have many responsibilities. Every week during school breaks, I work part-time to handle current debts. I am paying for school by myself and paying all my debts. With more debt coming after graduation, I am making strong efforts to achieve my goals. I have proactively worked on my portfolio, channeling my passion for game art and visual effects. I enjoy expressing my creativity through imagery. Enrolling in a visual effects class equipped me with the skills to craft comets, pyro effects, and design magical explosions. Motivated by this newfound passion, I am pursuing a professional career in the entertainment industry. I understood that advancing as a VFX artist involves studying other artists' work and consuming a lot of digital media. The significance of visual effects in games aligns with my choice to pursue a career in game art. My true future goal, though, is to write a narrative for a personal video game. I draw inspiration from the endeavors of both my parents and independent siblings. While the circumstances might not always be ideal, my family's history has taught me the importance of adapting to make the best of any situation. I have learned that it is better to find happiness now as you strive for your aspirations. While attending school, I actively work on my passion project by taking a character and visual development course, script writing, and digital painting classes. I show my work, receive feedback from instructors and classmates, and apply what I have learned. As I grow, I imbed the lessons I have learned within the characters in this project to inspire others in similar endeavors. I am motivated by the courage of those before me and my determination to create a narrative that speaks to resilience, persistence, and the pursuit of dreams. Just as my parents embarked on a risky journey to forge a better life, I am propelled by a sense of urgency, racing against the clock to complete my education and break into the entertainment industry. As a VFX artist, I would enjoy the process of creating compelling effects such as explosions, lightning strikes, and magical abilities. Concurrently, once I finish the personal project, I hope to inspire others who face similar challenges and show that it is a matter of time and dedication before they succeed.

Trusting in God brings a profound sense of peace, knowing that His plans surpass our own, leading us to better outcomes. As I reflect on my journey, I've come to appreciate the unexpected opportunities God presents when we relinquish control. My unwavering faith allows me to navigate a path marked by financial challenges, confident that God's guidance will see me through. The initial test came when I sought a place for community service during high school. Rejections and unanswered applications were disheartening until the pastor of my local church offered a solution. I needed to serve the community for school. Embracing this opportunity marked the beginning of my relationship with God, transforming my spiritual outlook. Grateful for the church's support during my senior project, I began attending Sunday services regularly. Over time, this strengthened my belief that God, who guided me through graduation, would continue assisting me in future endeavors. Through each obstacle, from graduating from community college to transferring to an undergraduate school and finding employment, fervent prayers brought answers. As a first-generation student, I did not have any idea how transferring was going to work or which college was going to be ideal. I prayed for guidance, and it brought me to a school that is the most affordable and filled with quality education. Even though I enjoy the undergraduate program, I had to apply for federal and private loans to continue. After coming this far, I cannot quit my education due to financial concerns. Amidst the emotional and financial storm, when scrutinizing what God was guiding me through, I observed His hand in every encounter and event. During my college career, I met wonderful people who elevated my experience. At work, I was blessed with beneficial jobs that facilitated car ownership and higher education affordability. God provides. I must not forget His love and faithfulness. I recognize that, despite the worries, God will take care of me. I remind myself constantly, especially this year, amidst industry layoffs, financial instability, and job insecurities. I never felt so demoralized and depressed. So, I prayed heavily for guidance and hope. God has responded with messages that reassured me to trust in His plan and to continue my education. As I continued my education, his grace shone through when I was blessed with two scholarships. This is why we need to have a strong faith. Currently seeking an internship, acquiring skills, and preparing for professional work, I allow God to continue to control my life and guide me through the storm. Scholarships like the Jim Maxwell Memorial Scholarship serve as tangible signs of God's guidance and an opportunity to express my faith. This opportunity means everything to me. It signifies the ability to assist my family sooner with finances, boosts my morale for school, and reduces a significant amount of debt. I find solace in knowing that with God by my side, traversing challenges becomes possible. His guidance molds us into the best versions of ourselves. God allows trouble to find us, but he also helps us to weather the storms for humbling growth. God blesses us with the right people and the right opportunities in time. God promises joy when we surrender our lives and trust him. I remain confident that prayer will lead me through financial struggles and fears, propelling me to greater heights in the future.

The transformative impact of kindness in my life is not the result of one individual but stems from the collective resilience and compassion of my aunt and cousins. A decade ago, they became an integral part of my life due to challenging circumstances, ultimately reshaping my perspective in ways I would not have anticipated. Today, we are closer, and I am blessed to have them as my family. I met my cousins and my aunt when they moved in with us. They were fleeing an abusive relationship, so they sought refuge with my family. Despite their past pain, our initial response was marred by pride and selfishness. Early on, I participated in mistreating them, creating an environment that was anything but welcoming. Yet, amid the hardships, moments of connection emerged, especially during festive times. Despite the transgressions, my cousins endured our unkindness. They eventually found their own home, but their commitment to maintaining familial ties persisted, guided by the virtues of kindness, sharing, and forgiveness instilled by my aunt's religious teachings. Even though they moved a city away from us, I wanted to see them. I bonded more closely with my cousin Jose because we shared similar interests as kids. We played with toys and video games together. At a young age, on my own, I would travel on a bus to visit. Over time, I came to see my cousin Jose like a brother. As the years unfolded, life presented parallel challenges to both our families. Two of my brothers pursued their paths, resulting in financial strain, mirroring the experiences of my cousins who had ventured away—one to San Diego with her boyfriend and Jose into the military. The pain of goodbyes accentuated the deep bonds we had formed. In the past, I used to bully them and fight Jose whenever he upset me. His sisters would protect him and his mother, in her gentle nature, would confront me. I would not change because of my naivety. Despite everything, they bought me highly thoughtful gifts. They think deeply about what I like and want to celebrate with us with a yearly trip to Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights. I am awestruck by their loving nature during their financial struggles. The hurt we caused our cousins in the past became a source of profound learning. Our family faces financial instability, prompting a critical reassessment of our values. Through my hardships, I cultivated humility and a newfound appreciation for the connections I still have. The lessons from the past propelled me towards personal and collective growth. Recognizing my mistakes prompted growth, deepening my appreciation for kindness, empathy, and family connections. As we continue our respective journeys, the impact of my aunt and cousins lingers, a testament to the enduring power of forgiveness, resilience, and the transformative potential of familial love. I am so grateful to have them as a family. I will cherish every moment spent with them. I aspire to have both our families continue to spend time together.

My siblings and I were born legally in the United States after my parents crossed the border for a better future. They knew life in Mexico would become unbearable, so they took the risk by traveling through a desert. As I stand on the threshold of my future, I carry the echoes of their sacrifices. While my two oldest brothers have begun to establish their independence, my younger brother, an older brother, our parents, and I remain a closely-knit unit, tethered by dreams and financial constraints. We still face the uncertainty of finding success in our current financial situation. So, I am in a race against time to complete my education and be able to support my family with a higher-paying job. As I described earlier, my parents immigrated from Mexico to secure a better future for their children. They have succeeded to a certain extent, but their efforts are at risk. Currently, my older brother handles the rent, but the balancing of expenses is becoming increasingly precarious. My mom assists with her savings; however, the funds will not last for an extended period. It is merely a matter of time before the situation worsens. Unfortunately, I cannot help because I am solely responsible for funding my education and must work to meet all my expenses. Unfortunately, this leaves me with limited time to dedicate to honing my skills as an artist. Currently, I am actively pursuing a career in the entertainment industry. Given my commitments as a full-time student and part-time worker, I do not have enough time to cultivate my artistic talents effectively. Juggling responsibilities, which include covering my car expenses, utilities, and contributing to my family's needs, has become a priority. Despite the challenges, I can empathize with those who share a similar journey. Disheartening circumstances that cause doubt in one's chosen career path and situations that trigger feelings of depression that stem from a fear of failure define this journey. Through my work, I aim to write inspiring stories in video games designed to prevent premature surrender. These stories draw inspiration from the endeavors of both my parents and independent siblings. While the circumstances might not always be ideal, my family's history has taught me the importance of adapting to make the best of any situation. I have learned that it is better to find happiness now as you strive for your aspirations. With my head up high, I aim to secure a position within the entertainment industry. It would mark a tangible milestone toward my definition of success. I am motivated by the courage of those before me and my determination to create a narrative that speaks to resilience, persistence, and the pursuit of dreams. Just as my parents embarked on a risky journey to forge a better life, I am propelled by a sense of urgency, racing against the clock to complete my education and secure a higher-paying position. It is not just my story—it is a tale of shared sacrifices, unwavering commitment, and the belief that through adversity, we can script a future that defies the odds and realizes dreams.

Video games uniquely blend art and music, providing a form of escapism that surpasses what films and television can achieve. They transport players to diverse worlds, offering respite from daily challenges and moments of pure enjoyment. Beyond personal enjoyment, video games also create opportunities for individuals to forge lasting memories with loved ones. This immersive art form has fueled my creativity and inspired a desire to uplift others. I plan to craft a video game experience that evokes powerful emotional responses, offering solace and inspiration during difficult times. As a first-generation student and a child of immigrant parents, life has many demoralizing situations. From the experiences of struggling to pay for school, not knowing if I can continue, and the fear of failure, I can craft a video game experience that inspires hope in others facing similar situations. As a game art student, I will design the characters, their outfits, the props, and the worlds visually. In time, I will learn to compose music that sets the mood and immerses the player. The underlying theme of the project is dread and overcoming fears. Video games can nullify concerns but provide a message of empathy and positive change. I hope to craft an unforgettable experience that uplifts spirits and fosters connections.

Breaking the cycle of poverty through college education has been a driving force in my life. From the beginning, I understood the significance of excelling in college, as it is not as forgiving as high school, where failure can result in financial losses. I knew I could not afford to do that. With the fear of failure guiding me, I am proud to have achieved passing grades in every class throughout my extensive college journey. Being a first-generation college student, my determination to succeed has led me to maintain a 3.5 GPA over almost a decade of college. While an older brother did not complete their high school career, my other siblings completed their undergraduate programs. I did not want to fail, so I wanted to graduate with the highest degree. So, I have never settled for merely scraping by; instead, I have embraced the joy of learning, cherished the class environment, and formed meaningful connections with others to enhance my future potential. Upon enrolling in a community college after high school, I pursued general education classes and elective courses that ranged from animation to coding, 3D modeling, and visual development. Each class presented its challenges, yet I excelled, realizing that my passion for success transcends any specific discipline. Additionally, with my academic performance, I was on the Dean’s list for community college. I also became a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. Alongside these achievements, I discovered my love for learning. However, what truly drives me is my desire to enter the video game industry, particularly in visual effects. What interests me about that field is replicating effects such as lava, shock explosions, and designing magical abilities. Knowing how to craft a visually enticing ability would be handy. Undoubtedly, VFX presents its challenges, such as building convincing visual effects and collaborating with 3D environment artists to deliver visually impressive game environments. I have faced these challenges before. I have what it takes to deliver high-quality results. Despite my ambitious drive to achieve success, various circumstances pose challenges that hinder its realization. My family faces financial challenges that could stop me from pursuing my goals. This situation has intensified my drive to obtain a degree and establish a position in the industry to support my loved ones. While I was initially enthusiastic about entering the entertainment industry to explore my passion for game art, my focus has now shifted towards mastering visual effects, a high-demand and captivating field. This career path intrigues me and provides the means to support my family and myself. Success in this endeavor would undoubtedly mark my next greatest achievement. Nevertheless, my ultimate aspiration lies in bringing my passion project to life and seeing it published. Completing my passion project would signify the pinnacle of my academic pursuits. After dedicating countless hours to diverse classes and overcoming numerous challenges, it would culminate in the publication of this project. This endeavor presents the ultimate challenge, demanding the application of all the knowledge and skills acquired throughout my college career. Designing the characters, constructing their worlds, and creating their props are just the beginning of this ambitious project. Crafting a compelling narrative that explores every facet of the message I aim to convey will require ingenuity and dedication. I am wholeheartedly committed to putting everything I have learned to the test in this ambitious pursuit. My unwavering commitment to breaking the cycle of poverty through education has propelled me to pursue excellence in college. The fear of failure, determination to succeed, and love for learning have been my guiding lights throughout this journey. As I venture into the captivating realm of visual effects in the video game industry, I am ready to embrace challenges, publish my passion project, and leave an indelible mark on both my life and the lives of others. Once I finish the project, I hope to inspire others who face similar challenges and show that it is a matter of time and dedication before they find success.

I was born when video games such as Halo, Super Mario Bros, and the Legend of Zelda were becoming a more popular form of entertainment than TV and movies. Movies like Spider-Man (2002), Shrek (2001), and the Lord of the Rings trilogy were released in the early 2000s and, while they achieved their level of success, couldn’t keep away from the influence of video games. Video games based on movies were published and it further propelled the popularity of video games. Growing up, seeing the new worlds and characters from video games inspired me to draw props, costumes, characters, and worlds. That is why I chose to enroll in a private art school to pursue my dreams of telling personal stories with original art. With these narrative-driven video games, I aspire to connect with others. Being a quiet person throughout my life, the ability to convey my emotions and personal struggles through storytelling would create heartwarming opportunities for building relationships. During my college years, I had the opportunity to serve the community, which helped me develop empathy for others. One of my involvements was assisting my local Baptist church in organizing an afterschool event for children, where they could learn about moral values taught in the Bible. Additionally, as a member of a college transfer club, I actively participated in supporting the American Red Cross during a blood drive. Before these experiences, I had limited interactions with people, as I was not naturally charismatic and tended to be quite shy. However, through volunteering, I began to break out of my comfort zone. These interactions introduced me to mostly friendly individuals and significantly improved my social skills. I started to appreciate the importance of community, and the uplifting impact of engaging in social events positively influenced my overall performance in community college. Being a first-generation student, I understood that the path ahead wouldn't be easy, so I dedicated myself to working hard and pursuing my passion. Achieving positive grades, I earned a place on the Dean's List and was invited to join the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. These accomplishments marked significant milestones as the first in my family to achieve such recognition. Having completed an associate's degree, I successfully transferred to a private four-year college, where I am now approximately halfway through my studies. My ultimate goal is to enter the video game industry and become an integral part of a passionate community that shares my love for gaming. I need help paying for the remaining half of my education, which I've covered with private loans and federal loans. This has caused financial strain and doubt, affecting my academic performance. The scholarship would greatly reduce the burden and allow me to focus on paying off my federal loans. High private loan costs may force me to pause my education to work and pay off debt. This scholarship would reduce my accrued debt and allow me to focus on my work. However, I'm still concerned about finding a job and building a strong portfolio to enter the industry. I need to have sufficient time to improve my skills, which has been a challenge while working multiple full-time jobs. Despite these obstacles, my experiences can inspire others facing similar struggles. I want to share my stories through the worlds and characters in the video games I create. Just as video games and their interactive experiences influenced my personality, I hope to inspire that change in others.

I am a first-generation Hispanic student in pursuit of a career in the entertainment industry. For a low-income Hispanic student, whose parents are immigrants from Mexico, this dream is a stretch and seems more like a fantasy. From my observations of my family, I have cousins who have dropped their educational path for a higher degree due to high costs and that is part of my worries. Now, they are truck drivers earning a decent amount of money, but I doubt that they are passionate about it. I didn't want to believe that it would also be my fate but with the current financial struggles as I get older, things are becoming a bit more realistic and worrisome. My parents cannot help me financially and I must figure finances out for myself. I am among the first in the family to pursue higher education. But by being among the first, I had missed out on a lot of strategies to get ahead. I neglected scholarships and took out some loans to continue learning. There wasn’t anyone to help me realize how important scholarships were. There wasn’t a coach to help me understand that, even though scholarships aren’t always won, I should turn in countless applications because loans are stressful. I have a combination of federal and private loans and it’s demoralizing. I fear not being able to finish my education, like my cousins, because things were too costly. My parents struggled to get us here and they achieved just that. So, I need to be as strong as them. I can hope for the best, but people truly succeed when they make strong efforts to get to their goals. Hardships mold a person and through those hardships, I have been proactively learning and working on my portfolio. It isn't easy for Hispanic families. I wouldn't have many hardships had my parents already established themselves well in the United States. Not knowing about required insurance such as renters insurance, the true cost of living, and how expensive things are in California made things difficult. But, It isn't impossible though. It takes a strong mind and spirit to work past the concerns of failure without resorting to drugs. My father is addicted to alcohol due to financial difficulties and my brother is addicted to marijuana. I don't want any of that for myself. After everything my family has been through, things cannot end here. I will succeed in obtaining a bachelor's degree because I want to shift my family's lifestyle to a better one. At this point, there is no going back. I am a 2nd-year college sophomore who wants to have fun doing art and get away from all that stress. I am passionate about what I want to do. I want to tell stories using video games as a form of telling them. Creating art and worldbuilding can be tough but it’s so satisfying to complete. I became passionate about drawing and designing narratives since they help us learn new things and grow. Watching stories where characters have overcome their obstacles is a part of the motivation. But, when the worlds are unique and rich with interesting contexts, I become inspired. With my outlook, I have stories to tell and worlds to design. I believe I can inspire others just as those stories such as Pursuit of Happyness, Click, and My Hero Academia has inspired me. So, I will do everything it takes to enter the entertainment industry as a first-generation Hispanic student.

We live in very difficult times that could get worse at any moment for low-income families. We have seen the prices of groceries and gas get inflated to ridiculous amounts and the percentage of adults living with their parents is only increasing in the United States. All these factors are causing depression across the country with more and more people resorting to drugs to cope. There needs to be a rise of people, from low-income families, that persevere in times like this. I believe I am a part of that group. Currently, I am a sophomore college student halfway finished with the undergraduate program. I want to enter the entertainment industry to design characters, build worlds, and tell stories. We also live in a time when video games became a more popular form of entertainment than movies. Growing up and being exposed to this new content fascinated me and I aspired to create my own video game. But, being a first-generation student, obstacles are obstructing my path. The issue is affording the monthly cost of loans I’ve accumulated. I applied for federal loans and had to take out private loans to cover the rest of the cost of a semester. I feel demoralized and uncertain about how I could accomplish my dreams. My brothers and I are living paycheck to paycheck and struggling to afford the monthly rent along with other bills. At least, there are dozens of others out there in a similar situation. We are just looking at how others pushed on and achieved their success. My empathy for others began when I served the community during my early college years. I have been an introvert for most of my life and projects tasked me to interact with others. So, I helped with an after-school program at my local baptist church where we teach sermons to children. Activities such as these curated my interest in helping others. I got involved in also helping the American Red Cross during a blood drive where I continued to be exposed to more social interactions. When engaging in deep conversations, I’ve learned that my problems aren’t unique and there are people, with similar or worse struggles, who want to be inspired to continue with their dreams. If I graduate from college and enter the entertainment industry, the stories I tell could inspire hundreds of low-income students to not give in to depression. Life is undoubtedly difficult, and we all travel an obstacle course that differs based on income. Since more and more people are playing video games to escape from all the stress, they would be exposed to the stories I tell. Borrowing from my struggles, I could write stories where characters greatly dread their failures, but stay resilient, and persevere. I hope to touch as many hearts as I can. I am excited to enter the entertainment industry because it is where people from diverse backgrounds come together to create a form of entertainment for the masses. Through music, imagery, and narrative, we can instill joy in struggling individuals. They can learn from our troubles, resort to video games or film instead of drugs, and strive for their success. If I could break the generational barrier to support minority students, I aim to inspire them. No matter how difficult or how long it may take, no one should give up on their dreams.

Firstly, I would like to express my gratitude for the opportunity to apply for this scholarship for video game production. Not many scholarships like this exist, so I am thankful for this chance. Regarding the topic of influence, an influencer can change someone's character or behavior. If an influencer possesses a good heart, humility, and a positive personality, they can become a blessing to those around them. With the challenges of life, people often need someone to brighten their spirits and relieve stress, which is where a positive influence comes in. By persevering and bringing joy despite their difficulties, an influencer can have a positive impact on the world. I believe that I possess some of these qualities. People often enjoy my company because I strive to make them laugh and provide an escape from their problems. I engage in conversation, actively listen, and acknowledge their struggles, even if I don't have the perfect words to say. Sometimes, listening is all someone needs to feel heard and validated. I believe no one should suffer in silence. I am currently facing problems that are gravely affecting my motivation. I realized that I may need to pause my education and work full-time due to the high monthly loan costs. It's demoralizing to feel unable to finish the undergraduate program because of immense financial needs. I de-stress myself by watching streamers’ content on Twitch and YouTube. Their jokes, positive outlook, and enjoyable content help me to relax my mind. I tend to listen to them in the background while doing schoolwork. I'm studying game art, where we design props, characters, outfits, and the world around them. I chose this field because I want to tell my own stories through video games or comics. Since high school, I've enjoyed expressing my creativity through art. Video games have evolved from a simple pastime to a popular narrative tool and a more immersive experience, and I want to connect with others through the escapism they offer. Financial assistance would help me achieve this goal though. Receiving this scholarship would mean everything to me. As a first-generation student, I've faced doubts along the way and have accumulated debt from loans. This type of scholarship gives me hope. Though I'm not sure how long it will take to obtain my bachelor's degree, I am determined to achieve my dream. I want to encourage others to do the same and never give up on their aspirations, no matter how challenging they may seem. Even if adjustments need to be made, anything is possible. I hope to inspire and uplift the spirits of others through my influence.

My concept of creativity means borrowing from life experiences to find innovative solutions to problems and presenting existing ideas in fresh, exciting ways. As an artist, I aim to portray established concepts in a manner that captivates audiences. Take, for instance, designing a werewolf character. To make this character stand out from the standard bulky, humanoid figure, one must think outside the box. I believe that the best way to reimagine such a character is to draw inspiration from one's life experiences. One of my desires is to be a part of a community. So, I make a similar goal for the character. I imagine that the werewolf character has fled from their home in the city and now lives secretly in the North with a Native American tribe. In return, that character protects the tribe from other monsters. Eventually, that character incorporates their culture and adapts to their new life. With these ideas, I now have ideas for illustrations that stray away from an image of a standard charging werewolf to a protective werewolf with a Native American theme. I draw on my childhood experiences of playing with toys to fuel my creativity. As a child, video games were not as accessible as they are today, so playing with toys was my go-to source of entertainment. It wasn't fun to base the play on the toy's representation. I would create elaborate backstories and immerse myself in imaginative worlds. Sometimes, drawing inspiration from Mexican soap operas my mom watched, I would incorporate drama and intrigue into my playtime. With each modified plastic piece, I felt like Steven Spielberg, creating a unique world with its rules and customs. As a college student, I turned an abstract idea into a visually exciting experience. For one of my assignments, I designed a menu system fake, hell-themed video game. When choosing difficulty, I visually portray it by using a small, puny demon character that gets bigger and more intimidating as you increase the difficulty setting. By using less text and more visual representation, I improved how a player could choose how they play. When exploring my concept of creativity, I see it as an essential part of my identity that has made me stand out in my classes. Even if video games may introduce unique worlds and experiences that could help imagination, playing with toys as a child helped me transform abstract ideas into exciting experiences. Creativity is at its best when collaborating with others. I am excited to enter the entertainment industry to share my ideas and improve my sense of imagination.

Life is an obstacle course. Depending on your income and other resources, that obstacle course will have its varied challenges. For a first-generation student, that obstacle course comes with steeper hills that require bold decisions to be made. Every step you take the further you go has irreversible consequences. If you want to be the change in the family that would improve lifestyles, then that path is going to be cruel. In the past year, I have faced a bitter truth about how I might or might not be able to obtain a bachelor's degree at Laguna College of Art and Design. To continue my education, I had to take a lot of loans that demoralized me and hurt my motivation to pursue an art career. Additionally, A.I. art exploded and caused more concern about our future careers. The rising cost of school, the availability of jobs, and the sheer difficulties of being a low-income student have caused me so much stress that I have never felt such depression before. I was catastrophizing in my head. I was doubting myself and regretting my decision to pursue a career in the video games industry. Beforehand, I had spoken about my dreams to my older brothers since they graduated and got their degrees. To my disbelief, they did not encourage my dreams and suggested other career paths. With recent financial barriers, I could see that they were right. I have seen quotes online that say art careers are more secure for those with a lot of money. The rich tend to resort to creative careers because they have the money to risk failure. Anyone can be creative until the rent is due. As a Catholic, I have prayed so much more this past year. Having climbed so far with only a few semesters left before graduation, I realize that I cannot go back down. Thanks to the Internet, I realized that there have been people who have traveled the same road I am currently taking. They have posted inspirational videos that provided me with the necessary encouragement. I discovered that if I fail, I will have to resort to a full-time warehouse job to pay off the loans, however much time that would take. I know that I would be depressed and would have proved my brothers right. But I have a growing skill as an artist and have received many positive messages from peers. The professors I have met noticed my tenacity and passion. Whenever I work on something, I complete it to the best of my ability. My drive is what is pushing all those negative thoughts away. As I progress, I cannot doubt myself. If I am doing something to overcome current challenges, such as writing scholarship essays, I should not worry about failure. Just like my parents who immigrated from Mexico and risked everything to pave a better lifestyle for us, I should make similar hard choices. I am applying to more scholarships than before, working more hours at my part-time job, and spending more time creating art to de-stress myself. As a first-generation student, I have learned how difficult it is going to be to reach my goals. I want to prove that no matter how difficult the obstacle course may be, you can keep your aspirations. You must keep pressing forward, and you can only lose if you give up.

There are many budding, aspirational students who want to give the world something but are held back by unmet financial needs. In every field of study, there's a student who has an idea that could improve things whether it's a political policy that could help thousands, an interesting story for entertainment, or a student whose music can soothe the stress away. The world may miss out on a lot if students with a lot of potential can't accomplish their educational goals due to financial barriers. It's also not just what someone can give back to the world with their own creativity. It's also about first-generation students who are trying to obtain a degree to be able support their own families with a higher-paying job. There needs to be more students, from all backgrounds, who were able to accomplish their goals despite their financial situation so that they become an inspiration to the following generation. I can relate because I am a hopeful, first-generation student who seeks to support my family by obtaining a bachelor's degree. I want to be less reliant on loans and be as stress-free as possible after college so that I can focus on my ideas that I want to share to the world. There are a lot of students in my position and we can show others how to overcome educational inequity. Everyone deserves a chance and that can happen with scholarships such as these.
