Educate the SWAG “Dare to Dream” STEAM Scholarship
Hello! My name is Greyson Parks, a senior at Lovejoy High School, and I would like to pursue a college education to both further my knowledge and education, and to also be more likely to make advancements in engineering, such as Architectural, Physical, Chemical, and even Aeronautical! Art and STEM are a huge part of my everyday life, being in theatre, playing guitars, and drawing! When it comes to theatre, I’m on the technical side of it, we call ourselves the techies. I’m currently the Properties Master for the whole theatre department, for those who don’t know; that means I create/manage the props for each play and musical, and am in charge of a crew. Being properties master is one of my favorite things to do, especially creating things for the shows! Usually, I’ll draw out a plan for the prop that I’m making, and then see what I can make from there. More recently, I served as the sound master for a production of Aladdin Kids- a program where I was a counselor for a theatre camp, for kids interested in high school theatre. When I’m not working in my theatre class, I probably can be found with a guitar in my hand, sometimes taken apart! I enjoy disassembling guitars to see their inner workings, and reassembling them, to make them better! I also make guitars, and as of writing this essay, am working on a acoustic guitar. STEAM is also relevant when I’m having some fun with architectural programs, usually building modern structures. In the past, I was part of a robotics team, which I loved! Except… my teammates weren’t as thrilled as I was, leading to some tough situations. In high school, I decided to join the Intro to Engineering class, thus forming my love for CAD! 3D modeling is something I will do for fun, just to stimulate my brain, and when given a task, I would complete it without getting distracted because it’s hard to get distracted from something you enjoy. In the Intro class, I also started to appreciate the mathematical side of it as well, how all the numbers fit into a formula, solving them and getting the answer, that just gives me pure joy! On the other side of things, art is a hobby of mine as well- doodling often and sculpting. More recently, I attended the National Youth Leadership Forum for Engineering at Georgia tech and had a blast. This reignited my passion for CAD and went out of my way to create a (somewhat) functioning full model of a DC motor, for my team’s capstone project. I don’t just work with computer software to make things, I woodwork as well! Within the realms Theatre and “luthiering,” I create things for musical productions and have to cut, drill and sand every last part of the guitars I make. STEAM has always been fundamental in my life, and enjoying it as much as I do, I’m sure it will stay that way!
