Hi! My name is Grace J Cox. I am Nutritional Science major at Howard University from Prince George's County, Maryland. I have a strong passion for nutrition, as I have understood firsthand its impact on the overall health. I hope to earn my degrees in order to become a registered dietitian and naturopathic doctor that specializes in mental health and hormone regulation. With financial assistance, it will be much easier to focus on my education and get me closer to the goal of helping my community.

While in grade school, I used to envy anything science or math related because I thought it was either something extremely boring or something too difficult to grasp. Because of this, my favorite subjects were all of the English and writing courses. Nevertheless, I was exposed to various science courses. During my sophomore year of high school, I was enrolled in an honors chemistry course due to my rigorous honors program requirements. My class was invited to participate in an experiment about food science; we learned what it is, how it's important to society and the processes involved in counting and reporting calories in various foods. During this trip, I became fascinated with the topic of food science, as I never knew it existed. I already had a passion for food. However, it was hard for me to commit to the goal of having a culinary career. Luckily, when I made my "discovery", my love for science began to grow. Not only did I begin to understand science, but I was able to love it too. Shortly after I was able to translate this into food science. I studied the different scientific processes that occur during every cooking method and how each method impacts the taste or quality of food and its nutritional value. My fascination eventually shifted to the science of nutrition and dietetics. I went from obsessing over the calculation of calories to learning and interpreting the calculation of BMI values.
As a future ND (naturopathic doctor) and dietitian, I hope to help the world understand the importance of food and nutrition. I want to help the world understand that adequate nutrition impacts more than weight; it impacts all aspects of health. I, personally, have witnessed this truth; whether it be during a lesson that was taught in my coursework while talking to my nutritionist or during an appointment with my naturopathic doctor. I have been very fortunate to have access to these resources and use them to my benefit, but I know many people are not. This unfortunate truth fuels my pursuit to be in the medical field. As a dietitian, I want people to know that many of their health concerns, such as depression, muscle aches or insomnia, may be due to a diet that lacks basic, vital nutrients and may very well be resolved with proper nutrition, as opposed to an expensive prescription with a potential to exacerbate their issues. As a naturopathic doctor, I want people to know that prescription medicines have the potential to mask health problems or even make conditions worse. Many people seek help from a standard MD, or doctor of medicine, and are given these pricey prescriptions or no treatment at all, which provides no relief and poor life quality. I want to provide people with a natural alternative to harsh prescription medicine. While MDs are helpful on several occasions, not all are aware of the importance of nutrition and other lifestyle habits, like an ND. I am currently studying nutritional sciences with an emphasis on health education for this very reason. I will inform all audiences that adequate nutrition is necessary for optimal living, as it impacts mental, emotional, and physical health. With my training and knowledge as a dietitian and naturopathic doctor, I will be able to decrease the rate of diseases related to poor cardiovascular health and poor mental health, as these are among the top causes of death in the world. Any financial assistance is greatly appreciated because I have at least a decade of schooling necessary to earn my degrees and career goals.
