Selflessness is a virtue that lies at the core of our humanity, a beacon of compassion and empathy that guides us to extend a helping hand to those in need. To embody selflessness is to transcend our own desires and concerns, placing the well-being of others above our own. It is a quality that requires us to embrace the beauty of giving without expecting anything in return, and it is through such acts of kindness that we truly shine as individuals. Reflecting upon moments when I have embraced selflessness, one particular instance comes to mind. It was a bitterly cold winter evening when I stumbled upon an elderly woman huddled on a park bench, her frail body shivering from the unforgiving chill. Without a moment's hesitation, I approached her, offering a warm smile and a comforting hand. Together, we walked to a nearby cafe where I purchased a steaming cup of hot cocoa for her, providing a respite from the biting cold. As we sat there, engaged in heartfelt conversation, I learned of her struggles—how she had fallen on hard times, lost her home, and was estranged from her family. In that moment, I recognized the power of selflessness, as it transcended the confines of physical comfort to offer solace, companionship, and a glimmer of hope to someone who needed it most. Another instance that resonates deeply within me occurred during a volunteer trip to a remote village in a developing country. The village was ravaged by poverty, with limited access to clean water, proper healthcare, and educational resources. Witnessing the plight of the children in particular, I resolved to make a difference in their lives. I spearheaded a project to establish a school, rallying the community and enlisting the support of fellow volunteers. Together, we built a humble yet vibrant learning space, stocked with books, supplies, and a dedicated team of teachers. The joy and gratitude radiating from the faces of those children as they entered their new sanctuary of knowledge remains etched in my memory. In that moment, I realized that selflessness has the power to ignite transformative change, not only in the lives of individuals but also in the fabric of communities. These examples are not meant to boast, but rather to illustrate the profound impact that selflessness can have on both the giver and the recipient. Embodying selflessness is an ongoing journey, an ever-present commitment to extend love, compassion, and support to those who need it most. It is about listening with an open heart, offering a helping hand without judgment, and recognizing the inherent worth and dignity of every human being. As I continue to traverse this path of selflessness, I am reminded that even the smallest acts of kindness can have a ripple effect, inspiring others to embody compassion in their own lives. Whether it is lending an ear to a friend in distress, volunteering at a local shelter, or simply smiling at a stranger, each gesture has the potential to uplift spirits, heal wounds, and foster a sense of unity in our interconnected world. In conclusion, embodying selflessness is a testament to our shared humanity. It is a reflection of the love and empathy that reside within each of us. By embracing selflessness, we create a tapestry of compassion, weaving together the threads of our collective well-being. In this tapestry, the beauty of our existence lies not in what we possess, but in how we give and how we impact the lives of others.

Jeannine Schroeder Women in Public Service Memorial Scholarship
As a Bachelor of Arts recipient in psychology, currently pursuing an A.A.S. in artificial intelligence and recently having completed an A.A.S. in computer systems networks an telecommunications, I am deeply committed to addressing the social issue of mental health. I believe that mental health is one of the most critical aspects of overall health and well-being, and I am passionate about leveraging technology to improve mental health outcomes. Currently, I volunteer as a crisis counselor for a mental health hotline. This work has been incredibly rewarding, as I have had the opportunity to help individuals in moments of crisis. However, I also recognize that crisis intervention is only one piece of the puzzle when it comes to improving mental health outcomes. To address this issue, I am working on a research project that explores the use of technology to improve mental health outcomes. Specifically, I am examining the potential of chatbots to deliver evidence-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) interventions to individuals with mental health concerns. Chatbots are computer programs designed to simulate conversation with human users. They are increasingly being used in healthcare settings to deliver a range of interventions, including mental health interventions. CBT is a well-established evidence-based intervention for a range of mental health concerns, including depression and anxiety. However, access to CBT is often limited, and many individuals who could benefit from this intervention do not receive it. My research project aims to explore the feasibility and acceptability of using a chatbot to deliver CBT interventions to individuals with mental health concerns. I am working with a team of programmers and mental health professionals to develop a chatbot that can deliver evidence-based CBT interventions in a conversational format. Our preliminary findings suggest that individuals are receptive to using a chatbot to receive CBT interventions. Many individuals who participated in our pilot study reported that they found the chatbot to be helpful and easy to use. We are continuing to refine our chatbot and plan to conduct a large-scale study to evaluate its effectiveness. Ultimately, I believe that leveraging technology to improve mental health outcomes has the potential to be a game-changer in the field of mental health. By developing innovative solutions that are accessible, affordable, and effective, we can help more individuals get the support they need to live healthy, fulfilling lives. In conclusion, as a graduate student in psychology, I am committed to addressing the social issue of mental health through research and innovation.
