As a Masters student in Forensic Psychology, I have been blessed with the opportunity to gain experience in several populations within the mental health field. I began my journey into this field as a volunteer crisis counselor with crisis text line. In an intense position, I found a sense of purpose and passion in a field where I saw others could benefit from having support in moments where it felt unreachable themselves. Soon after this, I applied for a masters program in Forensic Psychology. Intending on being able to work in a diverse area of psychology with a population that is typically underserved and underrepresented, I was eager to bring the experience I had gained through crisis counseling with me.
Being in this demanding graduate program, I continue to volunteer what free time I do get to crisis counseling. I also sought out work at an inpatient psychiatric hospital as a mental health technician and I discovered that I really enjoy working with a higher acuity group of patients. Initially not knowing what a fast-paced environment in psychology would look like, I was able to use tools I learned in crisis counseling to deescalate, build rapport, and show support within a group of people that I found really appreciating this approach.
With graduation quickly approaching, I know that this is not where I want to end my education and experience. I am a current applicant to doctoral programs in Clinical Psychology and I am excited to continue learning and providing service to any individual in need of it.
