Life is a journey of continuous growth and self-improvement, where each year brings an opportunity to pass the baton to a more refined, resilient, and wise version of ourselves. As I look toward the future, there are three key commitments I would like to make to my future self to ensure that I live a fulfilling and purpose-driven life: a commitment to lifelong learning, a dedication to personal well-being, and a responsibility to give back to my community.
First, I promise to stay committed to lifelong learning. As a Pre-Med Health Science student aspiring to become an orthopedic surgeon, I know education will never truly end. The medical field constantly evolves, with new research, technologies, and practices emerging daily. I pledge to continuously seek knowledge in formal education and through self-directed learning to remain at the forefront of my field and provide the best possible care to my future patients. This commitment extends beyond academics—learning also means growing emotionally and mentally, so I will strive to become a better communicator, a more empathetic individual, and a more adaptable professional.
Secondly, I promise to prioritize personal well-being. The pressures of pursuing a medical career can be overwhelming, and I recognize the importance of maintaining a balance between work and self-care. I promise to take care of my physical health by staying active, eating well, and finding time for hobbies that bring me joy, such as sports and outdoor activities. Equally important is my mental health—I will make time for reflection, mindfulness, and nurturing relationships with friends and family. By staying mentally and physically strong, I will be better equipped to handle the challenges ahead and serve my patients with energy, focus, and compassion.
Finally, I commit to giving back to my community. I grew up with a deep appreciation for the power of service because I understood what it meant to have nothing, growing up as a person of color. As I advance in my career, I promise to mentor and support young students who share my passion for healthcare, particularly those from underrepresented communities. I want to help pave the way for future generations to succeed in STEM fields, just as I hope others will do for me. This commitment to service will ensure that I leave a lasting impact on the world.
This scholarship is important in helping me fulfill these promises to my future self. Financially, my family has faced significant challenges, and the cost of higher education is a constant concern. While I am grateful for the support of my parents, we are not in a position to cover all the expenses associated with my college and medical school journey and will have to, unfortunately, delve deep into loans. This scholarship would help alleviate the financial burden on my family and allow me to focus more on my studies and personal development without the constant worry of how to afford tuition, textbooks, and other essential resources. By reducing financial stress, this scholarship would enable me to stay fully committed to my academic and professional goals, ultimately allowing me to become the best version of myself.
In conclusion, I am determined to pass the baton to a future version of myself who is more knowledgeable, healthier, and deeply connected to my community. By committing to lifelong learning, prioritizing well-being, and giving back, I will ensure that each new version of me is stronger than the last. This scholarship would provide me with the financial support I need to achieve my higher education goals and fulfill my vision of a bright and meaningful future.
