Losing a loved one is one of the most difficult experiences anyone can face. I vividly remember the day my mother passed away on October 25, 2021. The shock and devastation I felt at that moment seemed insurmountable. Suddenly, I found myself thrust into a world that felt cold and unforgiving, a world where I felt utterly alone.
In the days following my mother's passing, I struggled to come to terms with my grief. The pain seemed overwhelming, like a heavy weight pressing down on my chest. I felt lost and adrift, unsure of how to navigate a world without her presence. Amid my sorrow, I found myself questioning everything I knew and believed about life and death.
But as time passed, I began to find solace in unexpected places. I discovered a newfound sense of purpose in my grief, a determination to honor my mother's memory in a meaningful way. I knew that I wanted to make a difference in the world, to help those who were suffering as I had suffered. It was during this difficult time that I realized my calling: I wanted to major in social work and become a licensed therapist.
As I embarked on this new path, I found myself embodying Agape love in a way I had never experienced before. Agape love is the unconditional, selfless love that seeks the well-being of others above all else. In choosing to pursue a career in social work and therapy, I found myself channeling this love towards those who needed healing and support. I wanted to be a beacon of hope for others, just as my mother had been for me.
Through my studies and practical experience, I have learned to approach each individual with empathy, compassion, and understanding. I have sought to create a safe and nurturing environment for my clients, a place where they can feel seen, heard, and valued. In this way, I have been able to give back to my community in a meaningful and impactful way.
As I continue on this journey, I am constantly reminded of the strength and resilience that lies within each of us. I have learned that hardship can be a powerful catalyst for growth and transformation, a stepping stone towards a brighter future. In honoring my mother's memory through my work, I have found a sense of purpose and fulfillment that I never thought possible.
In the face of loss and grief, I have discovered a newfound sense of purpose and determination. I have embraced the challenges that come my way, knowing that they are an essential part of my journey towards becoming the best version of myself. In giving back to my community through my work, I have found a way to embody Agape love in its purest form. For that, I am eternally grateful.
Mental Health Scholarship for Women
My mental health plays a significant role in both my academic performance and personal life while attending school. The loss of my mother at such a young age has had a profound impact on my emotional well-being and has made it challenging to focus on schoolwork at times. As I plan to attend Elizabeth City State University and major in social work to become a licensed therapist, it is essential for me to prioritize my mental health in order to achieve my goals of helping my community and others around me.
Losing my mother on October 25, 2021, was a devastating blow that left me feeling lost and overwhelmed. The grief and sadness that I have experienced have made it difficult to concentrate on my studies and stay motivated in school. There have been days when I have felt overwhelmed with emotions and struggled to get out of bed, let alone tackle my assignments or participate in class. This has resulted in a decline in my academic performance and has made it challenging to stay on track with my goals.
In addition to impacting my academic performance, my mental health has also affected my personal life and relationships with others. I have found it difficult to open up about my feelings and seek support from friends and family, which has made me feel isolated and alone at times. The loss of my mother has created a void in my life that cannot be filled, and it has caused me to question my identity and purpose in the world.
In order to make my mental health a priority, I have taken several steps to support my well-being and ensure that I am able to thrive in school and achieve my goals. I have started attending therapy sessions to process my grief and develop coping strategies for managing my emotions. Therapy has been a lifeline for me during this difficult time, and it has helped me to gain perspective and insight into my feelings.
I have also started practicing self-care and mindfulness techniques to reduce stress and anxiety in my daily life. I make sure to prioritize activities that bring me joy and relaxation, such as spending time in nature, reading, and listening to music. Taking care of my physical health through regular exercise and a healthy diet has also been crucial in supporting my mental well-being.
In addition, I have sought out support from academic advisors and counselors at school to help me navigate the challenges that I face as a student. I have been open and honest about my struggles and have received guidance and resources to help me stay on track with my coursework and achieve academic success. Building a support network of peers and mentors who understand my journey has been instrumental in helping me stay motivated and focused on my goals.
As I continue on my path to becoming a licensed therapist and helping others in my community, I recognize the importance of prioritizing my mental health and taking proactive steps to support my well-being. By seeking out support, practicing self-care, and staying connected to others, I am confident that I can overcome the challenges that I face and achieve my aspirations. Elizabeth City State University will provide me with the tools and resources to succeed, and I am committed to making my mental health a priority in order to thrive in school and beyond.
Della Fleetwood-Sherrod Humanitarian Scholarship
Community service has always been a significant part of my life, and I have a strong passion for assisting those in need within my community. This commitment stems from personal experiences, values, and aspirations. I plan to bring this dedication to community service with me to Elizabeth City State University as I pursue my goal of becoming a licensed therapist through majoring in social work.
One of the most defining experiences of my commitment to community service was the passing of my mother on October 25, 2021, when I was just 16 years old. This tragic event deeply impacted me and influenced my desire to help others who may be facing similar challenges. I understand the importance of having support and guidance during difficult times, and I want to be able to provide that for others in need.
In addition to personal experiences, my involvement in the Student Government Association has further cemented my commitment to serving my community. Through this organization, I have had the opportunity to collaborate with students, faculty, and staff to address issues affecting our campus and community. This experience has taught me the power of collective action and the importance of working together to create positive change.
My passion for assisting those in need extends beyond my immediate community. I believe that everyone deserves access to mental health resources and support, regardless of their background or circumstances. By majoring in social work and becoming a licensed therapist, I hope to bridge the gap between those in need and the services that can help them lead healthier, happier lives.
My ultimate goal is to use my education and skills to help my community and others around me. I want to be a resource, advocate, and ally for those who may be struggling with mental health challenges, trauma, or other obstacles. Through my commitment to community service and my passion for assisting those in need, I hope to make a positive impact on individuals and communities alike.
In conclusion, my commitment to community service and passion for assisting those in need are integral parts of who I am and who I aspire to become. As I prepare to embark on the next chapter of my academic and professional journey at Elizabeth City State University, I am eager to continue serving others and making a difference in the lives of those around me. My goal of becoming a licensed therapist is fueled by a desire to help others navigate challenges, heal from trauma, and build resilience. I am confident that my dedication to community service will guide me in achieving this goal and making a meaningful impact in the world.
