For the past two summers, I’ve had the privilege of volunteering at Sunrise day camp. Sunrise is a camp for children with cancer. Before starting sunrise I was overcome with feelings of angst and doubt. How could I, a 15-year-old, provide the care, safety, and support that these children needed when I too was just a child? However, as a counselor, I developed close relationships with my campers and a care for them that parallels the care one has for their own family. Witnessing their strength and resilience on a daily basis was incredibly inspiring and fulfilling. Two years later, my involvement with Sunrise has only been able to grow in more positive ways. In efforts to connect my peers with the campers, I have created the Sunrise Club at my school. As a community, we use the Sunrise Club to educate ourselves on the harsh reality of childhood cancer and to connect our students with the Sunrise Association of the JCC in the same meaningful way I was able to.
In addition to Sunrise, I also dedicate my time to volunteering with an organization called Digital Grandparents. Each Saturday I take the ferry and train to the New York Public Library on West 82nd where I get to be an integral part in helping the older adults of our society connected with our modern world. Here, I teach my clients skills like Facetime, emailing, python, web-account management and everything in between. My work allows me to marry my compassion for Computer Science/Systems and my desire to help older adults.
My experiences volunteering at Sunrise day camp and with Digital Grandparents have taught me invaluable lessons about the power of giving back and the impact of genuine human connections. Witnessing the strength and resilience of the children at Sunrise has inspired me to be more compassionate and empathetic towards others, appreciating the importance of being there for someone during their challenging times. Additionally, through my work with Digital Grandparents, I have come to realize the significance of bridging generational gaps and empowering older adults with technological skills. It has shown me the transformative potential of technology in enhancing the lives of individuals, regardless of age, and the joy that comes from facilitating these connections.
As I look to the future, I am more determined than ever to continue my mission of making a positive difference in people's lives. I plan to pursue my passion for Computer Science and Technology, with a special focus on leveraging these fields to improve the lives of those facing health challenges, like the children at Sunrise Camp. While continuing efforts to keep the older adults of our society connected to the new generation of technology. With a heart full of dedication and a mind driven by innovation, I am committed to carrying forward these essential life lessons and continuing my mission to positively impact the lives of others for years to come.
