Growing up, college seemed like a distant dream, only for those from privileged backgrounds, as a first-generation student from a low-income family, I often felt lost and alone. My mother, while incredibly supportive, couldn’t guide me through the complexities of college, yet the idea of pursuing a STEM career felt even more out of reach, as no one in my family had ever ventured into such a field. I took the first in my family because I dreamt of being able to have the financial freedom, and success one could have in one of these fields. My first year of college was a very challenging time because of adjusting to the difficult regimens I had to make for myself, adjusting to academic pressures, and the overwhelming feeling of being a misfit took a toll on me. Without a strong support system, I struggled to find my footing. However, I was fortunate to discover two invaluable resources, Foothill’s MESA Program and PUENTE. These programs provided me with a much-needed sense of belonging. I connected with other students who shared similar experiences and aspirations. The mentors and tutors at these programs offered guidance, encouragement, and academic support. They helped me navigate the challenges of college life, from time management to study skills. Through the support of these programs and dedicated faculty, I began to overcome my self-doubt and embrace my potential. I learned to advocate for myself, seek help when needed, and build relationships with other students in similar situations. While my journey is far from over, I am grateful for the opportunities that have come my way. I am determined to break down barriers and inspire others from similar backgrounds to pursue their dreams. As I continue this journey of mine I've come to realize that being a first-generation student in STEM isn't just about the end goal and freedom, but about all I've learned in the process about opening doors for myself and through others; learned how to help people who may feel like I once did. I have now come to a place where I feel a responsibility to support and uplift those who are facing the same obstacles I encountered. I have Volunteered at the robotics club as a peer mentor in these programs has allowed me to give back, guiding others who are walking the path I once struggled to navigate alone, and hopefully become a tutor for my school's MESA program, the same way I received a tutor to help me with calculus.
