Andrea M Taylor Future Doctors Scholarship
I graduated from high school in 2020, majoring in the sciences, and as part of the education and career development program, I applied for an internship program at a local pharmacy. As I walked into the premises, I felt excitement mixed with nervousness. It was my chance to get hands-on experience in the medical field, and I was determined to make the most of it. Little did I know that this experience would leave a lasting impression on me.
During my first week, I met a woman who battled with diabetes and hypertension for years. Her evident fatigue and gloom touched me, and I felt compelled to assist her. I connected her to our chief pharmacist, followed up on her case closely, and asked my mentor questions about how drugs were prescribed and the interactions between the pharmacists and the physicians to help the patient. When she returned to the pharmacy a few weeks later to refill her prescription, I could not help but notice her jovial countenance as she expressed her gratitude towards me through blessings; that moment made me realize the power of Medicine and the impact a compassionate and empathetic physician can have on a patient's life.
My passion for Medicine had been kindled long before my internship. Growing up, I was fascinated by medical documentaries that offered me a glimpse into the remarkable world of Medicine. I was inspired by the dedication and compassion of physicians and knew that I wanted to make a positive impact on people's lives. After extensive research on the specialties in Medicine, I realized that my interest lay in pediatrics. As I read the works - including Gifted Hands and Operation Ouch, to list a few - of my esteemed mentors: Benjamin S. Carson and Alexander and Chris van Tulleken, my conviction to pursue this path is strengthened. Through their works, I have gained a deeper understanding of the complexities of Medicine and the importance of empathy and compassion in patient care.
I am thrilled to begin this journey and have the chance to make a meaningful difference in the lives of children and their loved ones. I am grateful for the opportunity to gain knowledge and develop professionally through this experience. With hard work and passion for Medicine, I am confident that I will thrive as a physician and contribute to the betterment of society. This scholarship will support me in making this a reality. Thank you.
