My mental health has a significant impact on both my academic performance and personal life while attending school. As a college student, the demands of balancing coursework, extracurricular activities, and individual responsibilities can sometimes feel overwhelming. When my mental health is good, I feel more focused, motivated, and able to manage the pressures of academic life. However, when I’m struggling with anxiety or stress, it can affect my ability to concentrate, stay organized, and perform to my full potential.
In terms of academics, mental health challenges can make it difficult to stay on top of assignments, prepare for exams, and meet deadlines. During periods of high stress, I often find myself becoming distracted or procrastinating, which only adds to my anxiety. The fear of not performing well can lead to a cycle of overthinking, self-doubt, and burnout. I’ve noticed that when I’m not taking care of my mental health, I’m less productive, and my grades can suffer as a result. On the other hand, when I prioritize my mental wellness, I can better focus on my studies, manage my time effectively, and perform well academically.

As someone who experienced severe anxiety and panic attacks on the spur of the moment, COVID- 19 was an alarm to my senses. I was left vulnerable to social isolation and disconnectedness, which fueled my anxiety, uncertainty, and loneliness and led to affective and behavioral problems. I was forced to stay home for five months after leaving it at 15. I literally had to endure emotional and mental abuse from the one person supposed to comfort me in my time of need, my mother. My siblings weren't much help either. Years of hiding my mental and emotional abuse, then finally getting away from it only to come back, put me 10 steps behind my life plan. My mental health was meaningless to the people supposed to care. My belief and faith that I could amend the relationship with my family desecrated. COVID- 19 pandemic made me choose a career that would aid me in making a difference for people like me. Children and adolescents in low to middle-class children suffer from mental health because the community they live in doesn't support them and their mental health.
Being raised in an environment that lacks any type of natural emotional intelligence is harming enough for a sensitive child, but to add a pandemic on top of that is a person slowly disintegrating. I hated my time at home and couldn't wait to leave either. Living at home again felt like my world was slowly dying, and everything I tried to prevent from happening happened; I hated everyone I lived with. My family was the reason for leaving home to boarding school, and my mother was the reason for my staying in boarding school after a year. Coming back home wasn't healthy for me; to go felt like fresh air finally coming in after being suffocated. COVID tested my willpower and my hope for a more prosperous life. To say you understand a person when they say "I'm in pain" is an understatement." You can't feel the pain of a person that had to fight with everyone they've ever known with the world battling itself. Not only were we in a health crisis, but we were again at social injustice. The people that looked like me were dying in broad daylight by police and racist bigots but were also being killed by an unknown disease we didn't know how to cure. Seeing that every day and fighting with everyone in the house and eventually with yourself takes a toll on your mental health, beliefs, relationships, and humanity. As a young black woman trying to find her way in the world, little steps at a time, while being beaten up by her family and the world, how can she survive without forcing herself into a numb state of mind?
I stopped being myself until I got back to boarding school-which wasn't such a healthy place either. Not being yourself was such a sad state for me. Every action was based on survival and protecting myself from everything and everyone, so I won't lose it when I fought for it back. I then realized that I had more strength than I thought I did. I started to build pride because I knew I had a strong backbone and cared for myself so much that I won't allow anyone to steal from me.

As a young black woman in America, it's hard someday to wake up feeling motivated to go out in the word and give it all you got, especially with being in a low, middle-class family on Medicaid and at the bottom of the totem poll. But, coming from a black woman and seeing her raise you is one of the most heartbreaking and inspiring things because my mother always taught me to be strong and never take anybodys' attitude; to always feel empowered and strong no matter what. Adversity is a complex and often challenging experience that can take many forms, and it can be especially challenging for a black girl growing up in a middle-class family. However, despite the challenges that may come my way, many strategies and approaches can help me overcome adversity and succeed in life.
Seeking support from loved ones like my mother and sisters. One of the most important ways to overcome adversity is to have a robust support system of loved ones who can offer emotional and practical support. A black girl in a middle-class family, such as myself, may find it helpful to turn to trusted family members or friends for help and guidance during difficult times.
Set goals and work towards them: Having clear goals can provide a sense of purpose and direction, and working towards those goals can help me stay focused and motivated, even when faced with adversity. In addition, setting small, achievable goals can help me build momentum and confidence, and I find it helpful to celebrate each destination as I reach it.
Learn from role models and mentors: Finding role models and mentors who have faced and overcome similar challenges can be a great source of inspiration and guidance. Being a black woman in STEM is very important to me because there isn't much representation for people that look like me to pursue such an extensive career. Choosing the road to aid my community in mental healthcare was always the end goal. People from marginalized groups, including Black women, may be less likely to seek mental health treatment due to various barriers. These barriers can include stigma surrounding mental health treatment, a lack of access to care, and a lack of representation among mental health professionals. As a result, having therapists who are members of marginalized groups may help to reduce these barriers and make therapy more accessible and welcoming to clients who share those identities. Being able to be the person to be a part of the change so the next generation can have the advantage many before couldn't have is the motivation.
Having therapists who are members of the same marginalized group as their clients can also create a sense of cultural congruence and understanding, which can be essential for building trust and rapport in the therapy relationship. This can be especially important for clients who have had negative experiences with therapy or have had experiences of marginalization in other areas of their lives. Returning to my community to pass the knowledge to help the people puts the battery in my back to pursue a degree in psychology.

Psychologists use the scientific method to design and conduct experiments, collect and analyze data, and draw evidence-based conclusions about the relationships between the mind and behavior.
Like other STEM fields, psychology involves applying mathematical and statistical techniques to analyze data and test hypotheses. Psychologists also use technology, such as computer programs and online databases, to collect, store, and analyze data. In addition, psychological research findings often have practical applications in fields such as education, health care, and business, making psychology a valuable contributor to the STEM fields.
