    Redefining Victory Scholarship
From my stand point, success is attending college and applying the skills you learned to better your community. So attending college is an expectation. It will provide me with a higher level of education and knowledge in my chosen field, pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences. It will also equip me with the necessary skills to make a meaningful impact.I was inspired by a speaker who came to our school to shed light on the issue of unaffordable medicine within the black community. She highlighted the stories of individuals within her community who had faced immense financial strain due to the exorbitant cost of medication. She also spoke of the heart-wrenching choices families had to make between buying groceries and purchasing life-saving drugs. She painted a vivid picture of the immense burden this placed on the black community. I was so moved by the urgency of the issue; that I began brainstorming ways I could support my community. I suggested starting a fundraising campaign to provide financial assistance, while others proposed awareness initiatives to challenge the status quo. Because of this experience, I became fascinated with the idea of creating new medicines with more potent effects and potential cures for devastating diseases. My newfound passion lies in making these medications affordable for the working and middle class. I have personally witnessed the financial strain it puts on families, especially finding affordable medications to help my niece with her overwhelming sensory processing disorder. The constant challenges her parents face in finding affordable medications to manage her condition deeply impacts our entire family. Determined to make a difference and help not only my niece but others in similar situations, I have set my sights on a career in the pharmaceutical science field. Determined to make a difference and help not only my niece but others in similar situations, I have set my sights on a career in the pharmaceutical science field. Becoming a pharmaceutical scientist is a path I want to take. Most individuals in this field hold advanced degrees, such as a Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences or a related discipline. Additionally, through their dedication and perseverance, they contribute to the development of life-saving medications, breakthrough therapies, and innovative treatment approaches. Their efforts enhance the quality of life for individuals suffering from various diseases and improve overall public health outcomes. To prepare myself as a competitive candidate in this rigorous workforce and make an impact in the community, college education has a big role in making my goals a reality. By achieving this scholarship, I truly believe that I will be able to make medicine affordable for people like my sister and her daughter and improve their quality of life. Moreover, it will have a ripple effect on the community, the high cost of medications can place a significant financial strain on individuals and families within the black community. Affordable medications alleviate this burden, allowing individuals to allocate their financial resources to other essential needs, such as housing, education, and healthy food. This, in turn, reduces economic stress and enhances overall well-being. Furthermore, accessible and affordable medications contribute to reducing health disparities prevalent in the black community. Historically, systemic barriers and socioeconomic challenges have hindered access to proper healthcare. By making medications affordable, individuals within the black community can receive timely treatment, leading to better health outcomes and reducing the disproportionate burden of diseases.

Representation in STEM careers plays a pivotal role in breaking down systemic barriers that have hindered the black community into STEM careers and spaces. This results in distrust in the STEM and healthcare fields because of the lack of representation. By promoting diversity and inclusion, STEM fields can work towards creating a more equitable environment where talent and merit are recognized and nurtured, regardless of one's background or race. For me, my motivation for going into the STEM field is to obtain the necessary skills to make a meaningful impact. All parents want the best for their child. Often, many parents raise their children the way they were. However, just like in the famous Pixar movie, Turning Red, the main character, Mei, is a young girl who struggles to balance her own desires with the expectations of her traditional Chinese family. Meanwhile, her mother, stuck in her traditional ideals, wants to control, and make Mei into a perfect daughter who will never change. In contrast to Mei, her mother wants her daughter to keep to tradition and stay her little baby. Although the movie delves into the challenges of growing up and finding one's identity in the face of societal pressures and familial traditions. Through Mei's journey, the film encourages viewers to reflect on their own experiences and the importance of self-acceptance. There is a scene in the movie where Mei explains how grateful she is that her ancestors were able to reach America. Mei says, “The least their child can do is be everything their parents hope and dream them to be.” I can relate to Mei because I too felt pressure from elder siblings to go above and beyond their expectations. Being the youngest in a family who sacrificed their lives so I could have more opportunities to be successful is a lot of pressure to be what they want me to be and leaves no more for me to do what I want to do. July 18, 2019, my mother cracked under the pressure of motherhood after single handedly raising eight children for twelve and a half years. In an illusion that all her problems would be dissolved if she abandoned her children for her own pursuit of happiness. My mother, without any hint of remorse, coldly kicked me out of the only home I’ve ever known, with nowhere to call home. Since 8th grade, I had found solace in the loving embrace of my sister and her family, who welcomed me as one of their own. My sister, a pillar of strength, has always treated me with the tenderness of a second mother. Through her unwavering care, she ensured that I had a roof over my head and guided me from the path of self-destruction. However, the burden of supporting me financially solely fell on my sister's shoulders, as my mother remained distant and uninvolved. The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic strained my sister's finances further, as she struggled to provide for her own family, including her three-year-old daughter, who bravely battled autism. Despite the challenges, my sister never wavered in her commitment to my education and personal growth. She tirelessly found ways for me to participate in school activities and sports competitions, even while juggling her own responsibilities. Witnessing my sister's selflessness and determination, I yearned to ease her financial burden from a young age. At fifteen, I desired nothing more than to contribute, but my sister insisted that I focus on my studies. So fueled by her belief in me, I became an honor student, a star athlete, and an exemplary leader. Living under the roof of someone who understood the true meaning of sacrifice, who genuinely cared for my well-being, and who constantly pushed me to achieve greatness, I found my purpose. A burning desire to attend college took root within me, serving as a personal goal that would honor my sister's relentless support and propel me toward a future filled with possibilities. Turning Red is the greatest movie because it tells and inspiring of a girl learnt that your family sacrifice is for you to enjoy the life, they gave you.
