    Dr. Samuel Attoh Legacy Scholarship
I'm going to keep this short and get straight to the point, as I know whoever is reading this is reading thousands of other applications as well. I'm applying for this scholarship for one reason and one reason only, and that is to help fulfill my dream of becoming a teacher. I am a hardworking and dedicated individual who is seeking financial help to obtain my mathematics education degree. I aim to become a high school math teacher, following in the footsteps of my grandmother and my mentor, both of whom I respect and look up to. When my mentor was my teacher in middle school, the way he taught made me want to teach the same way in my classroom. He constantly tried to enact different teaching methods to cater to every student’s learning method. He made learning stimulating, engaging, and fun. He gave students responsibility and always believed in their success. He respected his students and taught them why learning is so important. I deeply feel that my role as a teacher requires more than just educating young minds. As a teacher, I intend to model fairness and honesty, create goal-oriented individuals and foster student self-discipline and self-control. My ultimate goal within my career, and my life in general, is to inspire young adults within their own lives. I hope to be a mentor and a friend to my future students; to make a good impression on their lives and hopefully make a substantial impact. I recall being in high school and having problems that I didn't feel comfortable going to anyone with. My dog had passed and I was struggling with how to cope and deal with the situation. I felt alone and depressed, hopeless to see a future where I was happy again. However, my mentor, who was my fourth-grade teacher and worked in the middle school that was connected to my high school at that time, was always there for me with a listening ear. He was the only person I trusted enough to confide in and know that he would always be there when no one else was. He let me tell him my problem and didn’t judge me for how I was feeling. I was offered advice and guidance, as though he were a guidance counselor. He even stayed after school with me to make sure I was all right, and in doing so, he missed his birthday dinner. Now I know what you’re thinking, “most kindhearted teachers would do this for their students.” But he wasn’t just kindhearted, he treated me as if I were his actual daughter. From there on, he became a second father to me. Without a doubt, this close relationship shaped and defined my life goals, specifically, my career goals. He inspired me to treat my future students with the same kindness; to encourage them and promote a growth mindset. Surely, he influenced me to be the person I am today, and I would be honored to carry on his legacy both inside and outside the classroom.

As you already know, college can be very expensive and finding ways to pay for it can prove difficult. I’ve gone through some financial hardships before college even began, when COVID-19 first hit and I lost my job. It was very hard finding another job at that point, with COVID-19 on the rise and businesses shutting down. I am solely in charge of my college tuition and expenses. My parents do well enough financially, but they don’t have the means to help me. Since my parents don’t struggle with money, I barely received anything from financial aid. By the way, I honestly think it absurd that the amount of financial aid you receive is based on your parent's income, when most students receive little, if any, help from their parents. I’ve been applying to numerous scholarships, any I could find that I meet the eligibility for, but I wasn’t awarded anything. Every day I continue to spend hours finding and applying for scholarships, feeling more and more hopeless when another one doesn’t pan out. For months, I’ve been looking for a job and going to interviews, and I finally found one. I’ve been saving up every penny I’ve made to pay for this year’s college expenses. I also have a work-study job during the school year, but even after all this I still won’t have enough. To summarize, I've sacrificed my time, my sleep and my sanity in order to accomplish my educational goals of becoming a teacher and making a positive difference in others' lives.

Volunteering throughout the years has most definitely changed my mindset. Before starting my volunteering journey, I was very small-minded and only thought about myself. I didn't possess a want or a need to help others or see how others might be living. By doing good for others and my community, I felt a sense of self-accomplishment and a high degree of happiness. I felt a sense of pride and identity, along with a strong feeling of making a difference. My mindset was positively affected, as my stress was reduced by finding meaning and appreciation. My mindset was expanded when I went into low-income, impoverished areas, and saw how others had so much less than I did. This allowed me to build on my character and learn things about myself that I didn't know before. The concerns that mattered to me and my identification with the environment around me were both subjects of exploration. I started to wonder how I could use my passions for good and what I was passionate about. Being a volunteer has made me more of a tolerant, curious, and selfless person, all while making an impact on the world. As you already know, college can be very expensive and finding ways to pay for it can prove difficult. I'm applying for this scholarship for one reason and one reason only, and that is to help fulfill my dream of becoming a teacher. I am a hardworking and dedicated individual whom is seeking financial help to obtain my college degree. I aim to become a high school math teacher, following in the footsteps of my grandmother and my mentor, both of whom I respect and look up to. However, my mentor, who was my fourth grade teacher and worked in the middle school that was connected to my high school at that time, was always there for me with a listening ear. He was the only person I trusted enough to confide in and know that he would always be there when no one else was. He inspired me to be the person I am today, and I would be honored to carry on his legacy both inside and outside the classroom. Simply put, I want to make a positive difference in others' lives, and receiving this scholarship would put me one step closer to achieving this dream.

As for changing the world, if given the opportunity, I would not change anything. Now I know you might be thinking, "there's so many awful things about the world." While I agree with this statement, I still would not make any change, and the reason for this is simply because I believe that everything happens for a reason. Yes, there are diseases and wars, and while I wish these things didn't exist, they do. Bad things about the world have happened and will keep happening whether we like it or not, and wishing that things are different is only wishful thinking. I'm a realistic person, and one person cannot change the world. Honestly, I don't think even a large amount of people can change the world, because the world can only change if people change their ways. And if I'm continuing this path of honesty, most people don't care to change, even if it means the world would become a better place. Although, if you want a theoretical answer, I would have to say that I would change peoples' mindsets; to make everyone open to change and new possibilities.
