In an enclosed cocoon, the soon to be butterfly hides from the outside world. It is the only one that knows when it will be ready to fly off into the world. The world waits for its arrival. I could easily compare a childhood with the chrysalis in a butterfly’s metamorphosis. It needs to slowly begin to form with the help of other things but will ultimately become independent. During my teenage years I have learned to become more independent and especially during the crises the world as a whole face today. I have not only grown intellectually but have noticed my development in character.
During mid-July, previous and current board members of the Hispanic American Club reunited to discuss plans for a rally we had been invited to attend. Months after the death of Breonna Taylor, BLM movements, the disappearance and death of Vanessa Guillen, and the violence happening at the Mexico/U.S. border, our community hosted a rally/vigil. After having the club renamed and founded that same year, we were determined to share our stories as part of the Latine community at Ossining High School and be the voices of other Latine students. After a week of preparation, I had drafted my part of the speech focusing on the education of English as a New Language (ENL) and the separation of ENL and non-ENL students. Several members from the board of education attended the rally and congratulated the club on its phenomenal speech to the Ossining community. Never would have I imagined that I would be standing in front of hundreds speaking about a topic I am very passionate about; it was a sense of pride.
Among the political and racial discrimination, the country was facing economic hardships as many had lost their jobs, or had been placed in a pause, including my parents. As a low-income family, we were close to a crisis with no income coming in for a month. In August, my mother and father began to work again. Although I was busy working on a bioinformatics research project, it was essential that I start looking for a job to contribute to the family income and save money to attend college next fall. I applied to many jobs in hopes I would get hired with my limited hours of flexibility in the evening. I was not having any luck and began to lose hope. That was until one afternoon, the priest at my parish called my mother in regard to the job I was hoping to get as a receptionist. I began to work in mid-August and am still working as a bilingual receptionist taking phone calls, filling out paperwork and helping parents translate various school and religious forms. As a hard-working student that maintains a high GPA in advanced classes, works evening shifts, and embodies a community influencer I have learned that I am capable of multi-tasking, hard work, and making an impact on my community.
