My name is James, I'm a full-time student and Human Services Major at Suny CGCC and am trying my best to make a difference in my community and maybe the world no matter how small that difference may seem. I was born in raised in upstate New York and have lived a very checkered life with too many ups and downs for the short 28 years I've lived. I've also been in recovery from addiction for 3 years now since my sobriety date on Oct 10th, 2018. I'm trying my best to do what I can with the limited support I have, so anything scholarship-wise I can get will help me achieve my dream of helping as many others as I can.

Recovery to me means that you've been given another chance at life, recovery means fighting back against the abyssal grip that once held your life hostage, and most of all recovery means that you are living proof that other addicts can achieve similar success in their own lives. Recovery isn't just for yourself, but also for your family and friends, and for everyone who cares about you in your life, bringing a new future onto the horizon, where life can get better for yourself and relief can be given to all those who were worried sick day in and day out. Just thinking about where I once was 3 years prior, reminds me how truly precarious my life was at that time, not knowing if I would live through the next bag.
My sobriety date is October 10th, 2018, a day that I'll never forget throughout the rest of my life, a day where I was given the chance to take my life back into my own hands. It was also the day that I decided to say goodbye to my closest friend and my worst enemy, the thing that gave me the greatest comfort while killing me at the same time. All I can truly say is recovery means life, it means that my life is not over, and whatever wrongs I've committed are given a chance to be made right, and I'm given a chance to help those who may be suffering just as I once was.
