Life often unfolds in unexpected ways, testing our strength and resilience. As a young black girl from Chicago, I have navigated a path fraught with challenges, yet I stand today as a testament to the power of determination and the human spirit. From losing my mother to brain cancer at the tender age of 10 to enduring the instability of attending 13 different schools due to financial constraints, I have faced adversity head-on. These experiences have not only shaped me but have ignited a burning passion within me to break down barriers and inspire change in my community. These experiences instilled in me a profound empathy for the struggles of others and a fervent desire to uplift my community. I dream of being a guiding beacon for the youth who, like me, face seemingly insurmountable odds. I want to show them that their circumstances do not determine their potential and that they possess the strength to overcome any challenge. My aspiration is to develop a program that harnesses the existing resources within our community to empower young minds and foster resilience. Collaboration is key, and by partnering with local organizations, schools, and mentors, we can create a support network that addresses a spectrum of challenges. This program would offer educational assistance, mentorship, counseling services, and access to extracurricular activities, enriching the lives of our youth and providing them with tools to thrive. Furthermore, I envision this program not only as a means of individual empowerment but as a catalyst for broader community transformation. By nurturing the potential within each young person, we can foster a generation of leaders, innovators, and change-makers who will uplift our neighborhoods and reshape the narrative of adversity into one of triumph.
In today's interconnected world, the fusion of computer science and social impact has given rise to countless innovative solutions that address pressing issues. Computer science provides a powerful toolkit to drive positive change by leveraging data, algorithms, and user-centric design. By developing a program tailored to the unique challenges faced by marginalized youth, we can harness the capabilities of modern technology to bridge critical gaps in access and opportunity. I envision this program could serve as a digital compass, guiding young individuals toward educational, vocational, and social resources that may otherwise remain elusive. Algorithms could be crafted to match each individual's circumstances, interests, and aspirations with relevant opportunities, ensuring that the assistance provided is both personalized and effective. Machine learning techniques could continually refine these matches based on user feedback and evolving circumstances, enhancing the program's accuracy and impact over time. User experience and design play a pivotal role in the success of such a program. Additionally, the program could integrate interactive features, such as chatbots or virtual mentors, offering guidance and support on-demand.
Incorporating computer science to accomplish this goal offers the potential to overcome geographical, economic, and systemic barriers. Through this innovative program, marginalized youth could gain access to educational materials, job training, mental health resources, mentorship, and community support, setting them on a path toward personal growth and long-term success.
Marginalized youth often face systemic barriers that hinder their access to education, job opportunities, mentorship, and mental health support. These obstacles perpetuate cycles of inequality and hinder their ability to thrive and contribute to society. This initiative can create a pathway to a brighter future for individuals who have historically been left behind. It's not just about leveling the playing field; it's about creating a new paradigm of equitable access to resources and opportunities, driven by the transformative potential of computer science.

In envisioning a utopian vision for optimal mental health in the Black community, I see a world where mental well-being is embraced as an intrinsic part of overall health. In this utopia, the stigma surrounding mental health is eradicated, access to culturally sensitive and comprehensive mental health care is universal, and advocacy efforts lead to a transformative shift in social justice for communities of color.
At the heart of this vision is a society that recognizes the importance of holistic well-being, where mental health is not treated as a secondary concern but is prioritized alongside physical health. Mental health awareness becomes embedded in educational curricula, community dialogues, and family conversations. Open discussions around emotions, stress, and coping strategies foster an environment of understanding, where individuals of all ages feel empowered to seek support without fear of judgment or discrimination.
Central to achieving this vision is the provision of mental health care that respects cultural nuances and historical context. Mental health services are readily accessible and offered by professionals who understand the unique challenges faced by the Black community. Culturally competent care acknowledges the impact of systemic racism, intergenerational trauma, and discrimination on mental well-being. Therapeutic approaches are tailored to resonate with individuals' experiences, fostering trust and rapport between clients and mental health practitioners.
In this utopian future, mental health advocacy becomes an instrumental force in driving social justice for communities of color. Advocacy efforts span multiple fronts, including policy reform, community initiatives, and media representation. Mental health disparities are addressed through policies that prioritize equitable access to care, allocate resources for mental health education, and promote research into culturally relevant interventions.
Community-based initiatives play a pivotal role in destigmatizing mental health challenges. Grassroots organizations collaborate with mental health professionals to create safe spaces for open dialogue, support groups, and culturally rich wellness programs. By engaging local leaders, churches, and community centers, these initiatives foster a sense of belonging and facilitate collective healing.
The media becomes a catalyst for positive change by actively portraying diverse narratives of mental health experiences within the Black community. Movies, television shows, and social media platforms depict characters who seek therapy, practice self-care, and openly discuss their mental health journeys. Such representation fosters empathy, dismantles stereotypes, and encourages individuals to seek help without shame.
The intersection between mental health care and advocacy becomes a potent force for social justice. As the Black community gains greater access to mental health resources and the stigma dissipates, a ripple effect emerges. Improved mental well-being leads to increased educational attainment, economic empowerment, and community cohesion. This positive trajectory contributes to dismantling systemic barriers that have perpetuated inequality and oppression for generations.
In conclusion, my utopian vision for optimal mental health in the Black community envisions a world where mental well-being is embraced, stigma is eradicated, and culturally sensitive care is universally accessible. This vision is intricately intertwined with achieving social justice through mental health care and advocacy. By addressing mental health disparities, promoting equitable access to care, and reshaping public perceptions, we can pave the way for a future where mental well-being is a cornerstone of progress and empowerment for communities of color.

These experiences have not only shaped me but have ignited a burning passion within me to break down barriers and inspire change in my community.
The loss of a loved one can be a defining moment, and losing my mother was no exception. I was forced to confront the depths of grief while grappling with my own identity. Despite the overwhelming sorrow, her memory became my guiding light, propelling me to overcome every obstacle in my path. Her strength lives on in me, inspiring me to persevere through life's challenges and become an advocate for others facing adversity.
One of the most profound challenges I encountered was the constant upheaval of changing schools due to financial instability. Each new environment presented a fresh set of hurdles—academic, social, and emotional. The lack of stability weighed heavily on my young shoulders, yet I refused to let it define me. Instead, I used every transition as an opportunity for growth, adapting to new surroundings with resilience and an unwavering determination to succeed.
These experiences instilled in me a profound empathy for the struggles of others and a fervent desire to uplift my community. I dream of being a guiding beacon for the youth who, like me, face seemingly insurmountable odds. My journey has been marked by challenges, but it has also been illuminated by resilience, hope, and an unwavering commitment to my dreams. Losing my mother and experiencing the instability of changing schools could have broken my spirit, but instead, they ignited a fire within me. I am driven by the belief that our circumstances do not define us; rather, it is our response to adversity that shapes our identity.
As I forge ahead, my dream of developing a program that collaborates with existing resources to uplift our youth remains at the forefront of my ambitions. Through this program, I hope to inspire a generation to see beyond their current struggles, to envision a brighter future, and to recognize the limitless potential that resides within them. By channeling my own experiences into a force for positive change, I am committed to proving that no adversity is insurmountable and that with determination and community support, dreams can indeed be transformed into reality.

The value of education is something that I have understood since a very young age. Neither of my parents had the opportunity to fulfill their dreams due to having me at such a young age. In addition to not being able to pursue their dreams both of my parents faced many struggles in their personal and professional lives. My mother passed away when I was only 10 years old which made things even harder for my dad. Still, they did as much as they could to instill in me a love of learning and an understanding of the importance of hard work and dedication.
Because of their love and sacrifice over the years, I have been able to devote the time and energy necessary to academic accomplishment even with the many hardships that I have encountered throughout my life. In High School, I held a 4.6 GPA while working as a manager at a fast-food restaurant and a waitress at a cafe, played both basketball and volleyball and was president of our Jr. Minorities in Agriculture Natural Resources and Related Sciences.
Now I’m a computer science major with a business minor, I work two campus jobs along with managing my own business, I’m on the activity coordinator committee for the Black Student Organization, and I was recently elected President of a co-ed Service Fraternity - Alpha Phi Omega.
My ultimate life goal is to create a non-profit for minorities. I have experienced firsthand the trials that the color of my skin can create while also dealing with the regular trials of life. I want to create something that will not only provide minorities with the proper resources to survive but will also provide them with the education, resources, skills, and opportunities they need to flourish in their careers against all odds pertaining to their race or background. My hopes are to be able to provide resources that will help families find housing, food, healthcare, scholarships for college, and so on; while also having resources for kids to learn coding, healthcare, mechanics, etc.
My family has made many sacrifices to allow me to focus on education throughout my life. I now have an opportunity to do what my parents couldn’t. If selected for this scholarship, I will continue to apply the same diligence to my collegiate studies as I have to this point, making education and service to others my top priority. I will represent your organization well during my years in college and beyond. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

I had always lived with my mother and we moved a lot, so I was always transferring schools. My mother decided to move to California from Chicago, but she didn’t want me to make that big transition in the middle of the school year, so I stayed with my dad until the end of that school year. I love my dad, but my happiest memory is when I finally saw my mom.
