Growing up, I always found myself speaking up for kids my age who were being bullied. As I grew older I realized I could stand up for not just a few people within my reach but on a bigger scale if I studied law. Not just any aspect of law, particularly public policy/public interest, which is a very multifaceted field of law.
In 2022 after my Masters in Law was completed, I worked in an NGO called Mid Minnesota Legal Aid as a law clerk. There I realized I could be of more impact if I focused on a particular aspect of public interest, rather than focusing on influencing public policy in general. Especially since I realized I had no flare for politics.
Housing law caught my attention during the period I worked there. Then I realized there are a lot of people, particularly low income earners who suffer at the hands of Landlords, either due to inhabitable houses with molds in them, terrible heating systems (very harsh weather during winter, I live in Minnesota) unfair high security deposits, refusal to reimburse security deposits at the end of the lease, despite the house being left in good shape by the tenant, unfair housing laws, and the most common of all is discrimination. A lot of low income earners are discriminated against for various reasons. Either based on their religion, gender, age, choice of career, race or past criminal record.
Shelter is a basic human need that should not be denied anyone, especially for reasons beyond their control such as the color of their skin. Over time I got thinking about where my passion for housing law could be traced to, then I realized that as a child my family was a victim of unfair housing laws and a greedy Landlord.
I was a happy 6 year old child getting ready to go to school when some strangers knocked on our door. I was not mature enough to comprehend the conversation that was being had with my dad, but I knew it was not a pleasant one because of the look on his face. My mum took me to school despite what was happening, but at the close of school, I didn't go back to the house I called home because we had been evicted. Rather I was taken to the house of a family friend that was gracious enough to accommodate us on such short notice.
Over the years, I got to realize that the Landlord had taken advantage of a lacuna in the housing law and chose to benefit from it at the expense of my family.
So, I may no longer speak up for kids being bullied on the play ground, but now I have chosen to speak up for families like mine on this play ground called life through my practice of law who risk being thrown into a state of confusion due to unfair treatments by their greedy Landlords.
