Marie Jean Baptiste Memorial Scholarship
I am excited to apply for this scholarship to support my educational goals and aspirations. Having the opportunity to share my community service experience, highlight the significance of giving back, and emphasize the importance of community service is truly compelling.
Throughout high school, I actively engaged in community service, dedicating my time to organizations such as the American Baptist Girls. These experiences allowed me to empower young Black women in Syracuse, NY, encouraging them to embrace their authenticity and pursue their dreams with confidence.
As a leader within these organizations, I organized team-bonding activities to foster unity and camaraderie, creating an inclusive environment where members could connect and grow together. Collaborating with campaigns such as 'If We Eat, They Eat', I participated in sandwich and clothing drives for the homeless, emphasizing the importance of compassion and empathy.
Beyond direct support, I served as a docent at the Erie Canal Museum, educating visitors about our region's heritage and promoting a sense of pride and connection. Additionally, as an assistant coach at the Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School, I mentored students, instilling values of teamwork, resilience, and self-belief.
For me, giving back to my community means recognizing my blessings and actively seeking ways to uplift and support others. Community service is not only about addressing immediate needs but also strengthening bonds, promoting empathy, and building bridges between diverse individuals.
Engaging in community service has instilled in me a profound sense of gratitude, resilience, and empathy. It has shown me the power of collective action and the transformative potential of even small acts of kindness. Sara Jane Memorial Scholarship
My name is Ermine Reddock and I’m a Sophmore at the University at Buffalo. It would be an honor and a privilege to receive the Sara Jane Memorial Scholarship because it would help further my education as a Nursing major, and will get me closer to being able to help patients and save lives as a nurse. I was raised by a single mother, who struggled medically and financially to raise me and her other two children. As a first-generation college student, I intend to make her proud by doing my best.
I’ve always admired her work ethic, which is why I worked hard during school and in any endeavor I encountered. I earned and maintained a 4.0 GPA during high school while simultaneously working part-time and participating in various extracurricular activities. This includes the national honor society, track and field, plus community clubs such as the American Baptist Girls. For volunteer work, I was a docent at a local museum and fed the homeless regularly. Now that I am in college, I hold a 3.7 GPA and have joined clubs such as the black student union and improv club. I’ve also given back to my community by coaching track and field at the high school I graduated from and regularly assisting the elderly. I believe my tenacious work ethic has been shown through my achievements, and it encourages me to persist and stay strong despite challenges in life. With this scholarship, I can continue to help my community as I've done so far without having to worry about the financial burden of college.
Throughout my life, I have always had a passion for helping people. Although I mentioned my extracurriculars in the previous paragraph, one event stands out as the main reason for my interest in nursing. Earlier this year, my teammate was hit in his head with a 12-pound steel shotput during practice. He was bleeding profusely, and I was the first to apply constant pressure to his wound. I stayed and reassured him that he would be okay and not to panic even though we were both terrified. Meanwhile, my coaches called 911, and about 30 minutes later the ambulance came. Due to the application of pressure, his bleeding stopped by the time the ambulance arrived. As a result of this experience, I learned my contribution extends beyond sandwiches to make a difference in one’s life. At that moment, I knew I had the power to actually save lives.
With this scholarship, I won’t have to stress about saving money for college through working. I will have the opportunity to save more people like my teammate and help others by giving back my time to the community that got me to be the ambitious, compassionate, and diligent person that I am today. With this scholarship, you will allow me to devote more time to my studies and community by rightly investing in my education to become a nurse.
