Hey, everyone! As I envision my future, one clear and compelling goal stands out: to become a cardiothoracic surgeon. This aspiration stems from my deep-rooted passion for the empirical nature of STEM fields. However, what truly ignites my curiosity is the intersection of science and art, where the expressive and creative aspects of the latter intensify my fascination. The intricate complexities of the natural world and the interconnectedness of its elements captivate me, just as the multifaceted value of human life does.
In addition to my scientific pursuits, I am equally passionate about music. For nearly six years, I have devoted myself to playing the violin and piano. Through these instruments, I have found moments of pure immersion in the vibrant sounds and sensations they offer, providing respite from the everyday stressors of life.
As I embark on my college journey, I am eager to not only challenge myself academically but also engage in the vibrant tapestry of campus life. I yearn to participate in various groups and extracurricular activities, driven by a desire to make a meaningful impact both within and beyond the campus community.
I hold an unwavering vow to one day stand at the forefront of the medical profession as a doctor. Armed with a profound understanding of the human body and a steadfast commitment to the well-being of others, I aspire to contribute to the advancement of medicine and positively impact the lives of countless individuals.

Richard Neumann Scholarship
As someone passionate about health and fitness, I have always been driven to find effective solutions for tracking personal fitness goals and progress. Recognizing the challenges faced by individuals in this pursuit, I have conceptualized a comprehensive fitness tracking and personalized coaching platform. The problem at hand is the difficulty individuals face in effectively tracking their personal fitness goals and monitoring their progress. Existing solutions often lack the integration, personalization, and comprehensive support required for sustainable success in fitness endeavors.
The proposed solution is a user-friendly and technologically advanced platform that seamlessly integrates various elements, including mobile applications, wearable devices, data analytics, and personalized coaching. By combining these components, the platform will offer a holistic approach to fitness tracking, progress monitoring, and tailored guidance.
The centerpiece of the platform will be a user-friendly mobile application. Through this interface, individuals can set goals, track their progress, and access personalized recommendations. The application will sync seamlessly with wearable devices such as smartwatches or fitness bands, capturing essential data like heart rate, steps, sleep quality, and more. Real-time activity tracking and cloud synchronization will allow users to access their data across multiple devices effortlessly.
To ensure a truly personalized experience, the platform will offer customized workout plans and nutrition recommendations based on individual goals, preferences, and health conditions. Certified fitness professionals will provide virtual coaching sessions through video calls or chat, offering guidance, answering questions, and providing motivation. Regular progress evaluations and adjustments to fitness plans will be made based on user feedback and data analysis.
Advanced data analytics algorithms will be implemented to analyze user data and provide meaningful insights into fitness trends, patterns, and areas for improvement. Visualizations and reports will track progress over time, highlight achievements, and identify areas of concern. Integration with health metrics, including body composition analysis, sleep patterns, and stress levels, will provide a holistic approach to wellness.
Recognizing the power of community and social engagement, the platform will incorporate in-app communities and social media integration. This will foster a sense of belonging, support, and healthy competition among users. User forums will facilitate the sharing of experiences, seeking advice, and connecting with like-minded individuals. Integration with popular fitness challenges, events, or charity runs will encourage participation and collaboration.
To turn this vision into reality, a comprehensive implementation plan is crucial. The first step involves thorough market research and user surveys to identify specific needs, preferences, and pain points. A detailed product roadmap will be developed, outlining features, user interface design, and the technology stack required.
Collaboration with fitness experts, coaches, and data scientists will be essential for designing personalized coaching algorithms and data analysis models. Designers and user experience experts will contribute to creating intuitive wireframes, mockups, and prototypes.
An agile development approach will be employed, assembling a team of experts in mobile app development, wearable device integration, backend systems, and data analytics. Rigorous testing will be conducted to ensure the platform's performance, security, and compatibility across various devices and operating systems.
By implementing this comprehensive fitness tracking and personalized coaching platform, individuals will have the tools and support they need to effectively track their fitness goals, monitor progress, and receive tailored guidance. This solution addresses the existing challenges faced by individuals in the fitness realm, empowering them to achieve sustainable success on their health journeys. With the necessary resources and funding, this platform has the potential to revolutionize the way people approach their fitness goals and enhance their overall well-being.
Collaboration & Diversity in Healthcare Scholarship
After finding the buried pig (as a mock human body) under a suspicious mound of dirt, we taped off the "crime scene", collected and documented the scattered "evidence", and performed all other procedures in the mock forensic investigation. Finally, after digging up the pig, we took it to the laboratory for the long-awaited, exciting autopsy. Our forensics team consisted of 10 students, and we were all equally excited and nervous to finally complete our first dissection.
I was enthralled as I watched my classmates take turns removing their assigned organs, imagining how I could so skillfully remove the liver.
Finally, my turn! As I cut away at fascia and tissue, I accidentally clipped and perforated the bulging bowel!
POOF!
As a horrid stench permeated the room, tears filled in my eyes as cold dread ran through my body. No one else had messed up as badly as I did. It was all my fault.
With a grim and shameful expression, I dexterously severed that now very soiled liver and handed the scalpel to my classmate, apologizing over and over and over. I expected anger, yet my classmate instead smiled and took the scalpel, reassuring me that mistakes are okay and things like this happen.
All of a sudden, we surprisingly all became more efficient, as no one wanted to be in that room any longer than necessary. We helped each other with our organ dissections, prepared solutions of formaldehyde for each other, and cleaned up stations together. After we finished, we rushed into the hallway, laughing and joking about my mishap.
In due time, pizza was delivered. As I filled my plate and sat down, I realized that few of my classmates were enthusiastic about lunch. Then I'll never forget what my teacher said.
"Erin, you'd make an excellent surgeon. Blood and organs don't faze you. And even after that, you can still enjoy pizza!"
In healthcare, collaboration among healthcare professionals, researchers, and policymakers is necessary to develop effective treatments and improve healthcare delivery. Collaboration can help identify gaps in knowledge, improve research methodologies, and ensure that patients receive the best possible care.
Diversity in the healthcare and medical field is also important as it can help promote equity and inclusivity in healthcare delivery. Patients from diverse backgrounds may have unique healthcare needs, and having a diverse healthcare workforce can help ensure that these needs are met. In addition, diverse perspectives can lead to a better understanding of the social determinants of health and can help address health disparities.
As a future healthcare professional, I plan to apply these values of collaboration and diversity to my work by actively seeking out opportunities to collaborate with individuals from diverse backgrounds. I will strive to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for my patients and colleagues, and I will work to ensure that my patients' healthcare needs are met with the utmost attention and care. I will also make it a priority to stay up-to-date with the latest research and advancements in the field and to actively participate in professional development opportunities. By doing so, I hope to make a positive impact on the healthcare and medical field and to help advance the quality of care for all patients.
Healthy Eating Scholarship
Healthy eating habits are important for many reasons. Our bodies require a variety of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals to function properly, and a balanced and nutritious diet helps ensure we get the nutrients we need. In addition, healthy eating habits can prevent chronic diseases, maintain a healthy weight, and improve mental health.
When we practice healthy eating habits, we can notice a significant difference in our physical and mental health. Physically, we may experience increased energy levels, improved digestion, and better immune function. Our bodies need a balanced and varied diet to function properly, and consuming nutrient-dense foods can help us feel our best.
Mentally, healthy eating habits can improve our mood, cognitive function, and overall mental health. Eating a balanced diet can help regulate our mood and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. In addition, consuming foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish and nuts, can improve brain function and reduce the risk of cognitive decline.
On the other hand, poor eating habits can have negative effects on our physical and mental health. A diet high in processed foods, refined sugars, and unhealthy fats can lead to weight gain, inflammation, and an increased risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease. In addition, poor nutrition has been linked to poor mental health outcomes, such as depression and anxiety.
It can be challenging to adopt healthy eating habits, especially in a world where unhealthy options are often more convenient and accessible. However, there are several strategies that can help us maintain a healthy diet. These include:
Eating a variety of foods: Consuming a variety of foods helps ensure we get all the nutrients we need. We should aim to include a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats in our diet.
Planning ahead: Planning meals in advance can help us make healthier choices and avoid the temptation of unhealthy options. We can prepare healthy snacks and meals ahead of time to ensure we have nutritious options readily available.
Reading food labels: Reading food labels can help us make informed decisions about the foods we consume. We should look for foods that are low in added sugars, unhealthy fats, and sodium, and high in fiber and protein.
Moderation: While it's important to eat a healthy and balanced diet, it's also important to enjoy treats in moderation. We can incorporate our favorite foods into our diet in small amounts while still maintaining a healthy overall diet.
In conclusion, healthy eating habits are essential for our physical and mental health. By consuming a balanced and nutritious diet, we can improve our energy levels, prevent chronic diseases, and improve our mental health outcomes. While adopting healthy eating habits can be challenging, there are several strategies we can use to maintain a healthy diet and reap the benefits of good nutrition.

Embracing the power of neuroplasticity, I can stay calm in very stressful or unexpected situations. For example, despite being late to an important violin competition and shaken by a minor traffic accident, I could still clear my mind, fully concentrate on the task, and immerse myself in the tonality and artistry of my music. As a dedicated student aspiring to become a doctor, I know that this skill will keep me grounded and focused in difficult academic challenges and potential future life-or-death emergencies.
I am also blessed with exceptional auditory memory, allowing me to effortlessly recognize over 150 K-Pop songs from the very first measure. This treasured talent, combined with my innate sense of relative pitch and my passion for music, helps me greatly in memorizing and interpreting complex violin pieces for performances.
I love curating and meticulously assembling outfits that seamlessly blend minimalistic dark academia and bold streetwear clothing aesthetics. Each carefully crafted look inspires me with its creativity and expression, and of course, receiving compliments on my style always brightens my day!
Another favorite “talent” might not be useful, but it is playful and an opportunity to challenge myself: the art of throwing and then catching small pieces of food in my mouth. With a flick of my wrist, I send blueberries, popcorn, or peanuts soaring into the air, only to catch them again with a deft move. My current record stands at 31 consecutive catches, but maybe one day I will break the world record of 54!
As someone who is fascinated by medicine and the prospect of benefitting others, I want to continue my advocating for health and wellness in my community. Working closely with my pre-med advisor and partnering with the American Red Cross, we established a CPR Certification program at my school. It was a huge success, and we even expanded our lessons to students' homes, determined to bring the training directly to those who might not be able to come to us. Driven by the knowledge that every single life we touched was a victory, we have certified over 100 students and family members!
I also co-founded the Healthy Heart Association at my school, where we volunteer every week at the Boys and Girls Club of Broward County, designing interactive lessons and planning engaging activities to involve kids in developing healthy heart habits at a young age. By demonstrating the importance of physical activity and offering nutritious snack options, we aim to inspire more children to embrace healthy habits that will last a lifetime.
