Understanding the nature of our universe is a pursuit that holds profound significance for humanity. It provides us with insights into the fundamental laws governing our existence, the origins of celestial bodies, and the conditions necessary for life. This quest not only satisfies our innate curiosity about the cosmos but also has practical implications across various disciplines, from technology and medicine to philosophy and ethics. As someone embarking on a career in Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA), my interest in understanding the universe stems from a broader curiosity about the world and a desire to contribute to knowledge that enhances human understanding and well-being. While my professional focus will be on improving communication and cognitive abilities in individuals, I recognize that the principles underlying scientific inquiry and interdisciplinary collaboration are equally relevant and impactful. The study of the universe relies on rigorous observation, experimentation, and theoretical modeling—the essence of the scientific method. By applying these methodologies, researchers systematically investigate cosmic phenomena, test hypotheses, and refine our understanding of the cosmos. This disciplined approach not only advances our knowledge but also fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for any field, including speech-language pathology. The study of the universe encourages interdisciplinary approaches, bridging diverse fields such as physics, astronomy, mathematics, and biology. Collaborations across these disciplines enhance our ability to tackle complex questions about the universe's origin, structure, and evolution. This integration of insights and methodologies promotes a holistic understanding that transcends disciplinary boundaries, enriching both scientific research and practical applications. Technological innovation plays a pivotal role in advancing our understanding of the universe. Telescopes, particle accelerators, and space probes are among the sophisticated tools that have revolutionized our ability to explore and study cosmic phenomena. Emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing, hold promise for unlocking new discoveries and accelerating scientific progress. These technological advancements not only expand the frontiers of human knowledge but also inspire innovation in other fields, driving societal progress and improving quality of life. Beyond scientific inquiry, the study of the universe prompts philosophical reflections on our place in the cosmos and ethical considerations regarding the responsible use of knowledge and technology. It encourages contemplation of existential questions and fosters a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of life on Earth. This philosophical dimension enriches our understanding of ourselves and our relationship with the universe, guiding ethical decision-making and societal priorities. As an aspiring SLPA, my primary focus lies in understanding and supporting human communication and cognition. While my career path may not directly involve astrophysical research, the principles of scientific inquiry, interdisciplinary collaboration, and ethical responsibility are foundational to my practice. Speech-language pathology encompasses the study of how communication disorders impact individuals' ability to connect, learn, and thrive. By employing evidence-based practices, conducting assessments, and implementing therapeutic interventions, SLPA professionals enhance clients' communication skills and overall quality of life. My interest in understanding the universe parallels my dedication to understanding and improving human communication. Both endeavors require empathy, critical thinking, and a commitment to lifelong learning. As an SLPA, I aim to integrate innovative approaches and technologies into my practice, staying abreast of research advancements and advocating for inclusive and accessible speech-language services. By fostering effective communication, I strive to empower individuals to express themselves, participate fully in society, and achieve their personal and academic goals. The quest to understand the nature of our universe is inherently linked to our curiosity about the world and our place within it. As a future SLPA, I recognize the importance of scientific inquiry, interdisciplinary collaboration, and ethical considerations in advancing knowledge and improving human well-being. By embracing these principles, I aspire to contribute to both the scientific community's understanding of the universe and the enhancement of communication skills and quality of life for individuals in need. Through these pursuits, I hope to contribute to a more informed, interconnected, and compassionate world.

Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Growing up as a first-generation college student in a Filipino immigrant family, I faced unique challenges that significantly impacted my mental health. The pressure to succeed academically while navigating an unfamiliar educational system, combined with a lack of understanding and support from my parents, often left me feeling isolated and overwhelmed. My struggle with communication issues further compounded these feelings, as I found it difficult to express myself and connect with others. These experiences profoundly shaped my goals, relationships, and understanding of the world. My personal battles with mental health have been instrumental in defining my professional goals. Initially, I pursued a BA degree with no clear direction, simply following the expected path. However, my struggles with anxiety and self-doubt during this period forced me to confront my mental health head-on. With the support of friends and mentors, I learned to manage my anxiety and gain a better understanding of my own needs and aspirations. This journey of self-discovery led me to a profound realization: I wanted to help others who were facing similar challenges. This epiphany guided me towards the field of speech-language pathology. As someone who experienced communication difficulties, I understood the frustration and isolation that come with being unable to express oneself effectively. My goal is to become a licensed Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) to support children who face speech and language challenges. I am particularly passionate about working with children because I believe that early intervention is crucial in helping them overcome their obstacles and build confidence. By addressing their communication issues, I hope to help them avoid some of the mental health struggles that I experienced. My mental health experiences have also significantly influenced my relationships. During my early college years, my anxiety and self-doubt made it difficult for me to form meaningful connections. I often felt misunderstood and unsupported, which led to a sense of isolation. However, my relationship with my best friend, Michael, became a turning point. Michael, despite being much older, provided the understanding and support that I desperately needed. He encouraged me to embrace who I am and helped me navigate my path, teaching me the value of empathy, patience, and unconditional support. This relationship taught me the importance of surrounding myself with positive influences and supportive individuals. It also highlighted the impact that a single person can have on someone’s mental health journey. As a result, I have become more intentional about the relationships I cultivate, seeking out those who are understanding and supportive. Additionally, my experiences have made me more empathetic towards others, particularly those who are struggling with mental health issues. I strive to be a source of support and encouragement for my friends and colleagues, just as Michael was for me. My struggles with mental health have fundamentally shaped my understanding of the world. They have given me a deep appreciation for the complexity and variability of human experiences. I have learned that mental health issues are not always visible and that everyone is fighting their own battles. This understanding has made me more compassionate and patient, both in my personal life and in my professional interactions. Working as a library technician and previously as a library coordinator for children, I have seen firsthand the impact of mental health on students’ academic performance and overall well-being. These experiences have reinforced my belief in the importance of creating supportive and inclusive environments where individuals feel valued and understood. I am committed to fostering such environments in my future role as an SLPA, ensuring that children receive the support they need to thrive both academically and personally. Looking ahead, I am determined to leverage my experiences with mental health to make a positive impact on the lives of others. My goal as an SLPA is to provide children with the tools and support they need to overcome their speech and language challenges, thereby reducing the risk of associated mental health issues. I also aspire to advocate for greater awareness and resources for speech and language services, particularly in underserved communities. Many children from low-income families do not have access to the services they need, and I am determined to bridge this gap. In addition to my professional goals, I am committed to ongoing self-improvement and mental health advocacy. I plan to continue my education and training to stay abreast of the latest developments in speech-language pathology and mental health. I also hope to engage in community outreach and education to raise awareness about the importance of mental health and early intervention. By sharing my story and experiences, I aim to destigmatize mental health issues and encourage others to seek the help and support they need. In conclusion, my experiences with mental health have profoundly shaped my goals, relationships, and understanding of the world. They have driven me to pursue a career in speech-language pathology, where I hope to make a positive impact on the lives of children facing speech and language challenges. These experiences have also taught me the value of supportive relationships and the importance of empathy and compassion. As I continue on my journey, I am committed to using my experiences to advocate for greater awareness and resources for mental health and speech-language services, striving to create a more inclusive and supportive world for all.

My best friend, Michael, has been a guiding light in my life, providing support and wisdom that have been instrumental in shaping who I am today. Despite a considerable age difference between us, our friendship is characterized by mutual respect, deep understanding, and a shared sense of purpose. Michael’s influence has been pivotal in my journey through college and beyond, helping me navigate challenges and discover my true self, especially when I lacked support from my own parents. I met Michael during my first semester in college, a time when I was struggling to find my identity and purpose. Fresh out of high school, I was overwhelmed by the new environment and the expectations that came with it. My parents were unsupportive of my educational aspirations, adding to my sense of isolation. Michael, who was much older and wiser, took me under his wing. His life experience and calm demeanor provided a stark contrast to the chaos I felt internally. He encouraged me to embrace who I am and supported me through my journey of self-discovery. Our unlikely friendship showed me that personality and common interests can bridge generational gaps and create deep, meaningful connections. One of the defining moments in our friendship occurred during my sophomore year. I was on the brink of giving up, feeling lost and unsure about my future. Michael noticed my distress and helped me relax simply by listening and taking me for a walk and sandwich. Away from the campus, we spent hours talking about life, dreams, and the future. Michael shared his own struggles and triumphs, including from his time in the marines. His stories were not just tales of success but lessons on the importance of persistence and self-belief. Another memorable moment was during my senior year, when I faced a particularly tough semester. Juggling part-time jobs and a full course load left me exhausted and demoralized. My parents' continued lack of support only compounded my stress. Michael would regularly check in on me, offering words of encouragement and practical advice on time management. These gestures made a world of difference. They reminded me that I was not alone and that someone believed in my potential. Michael’s support extended beyond just academic and emotional assistance. He played a crucial role in helping me discover my passions and strengths. His diverse interests and deep knowledge of various subjects inspired me to explore new areas and step out of my comfort zone. Michael’s encouragement helped me to embrace my interests with confidence, leading to a more fulfilling and enriched college experience. Michael has been more than just a friend; he has been a mentor, a guide, and a source of unwavering support. His belief in me has instilled a sense of self-worth and confidence that I carry with me to this day. I have a background as a first-generation college student with Filipino immigrant parents. I grew up knowing that I wanted to be educated, but it took me time to find my niche in where I could make the most difference in my community. My initial academic journey was marked by the typical challenges of a first-generation college student fresh out of high school. After graduation I began working in libraries because I loved the idea of connecting people to their resources. I have worked as a children's librarian and as a library technician in a university. Working full-time while attending classes has honed my time management skills, resilience, and determination. I am driven by a desire to make a tangible difference in the lives of children, particularly those facing communication challenges similar to those I experienced growing up. This clarity of purpose has made my studies more engaging and relevant, as I can directly connect what we learn in the classroom to practical applications in the field of speech-language pathology. My parents, who emigrated from the Philippines, instilled in me the value of hard work and the importance of education. Their sacrifices have fueled my determination to excel academically and professionally. Understanding the barriers they faced has given me a deep appreciation for the opportunities education can provide and a strong desire to give back to my community. "The Summer I Turned Pretty" Fan Scholarship
Each character in the "The Summer I Turned Pretty" is important to Belly's journey and character development. I believe that everyone meets for a reason, and it transforms your life in a way that is meant to be. I am Team Conrad because for the purpose of Belly's story, it's shown that he has more depth, connection, and emotional maturity that positively influences her. Conrad Fisher is complex and his own internal struggles. He has a brooding exterior, but shows a soft side and vulnerability when he is with Belly. Beyond being attracted to Belly, he shares intimate details about himself and his feelings about his mother's worsening health. He is caring towards his whole family. He sacrifices his own happiness for his brother's sake. This includes stepping back from Belly in spite of his own feelings for her. He is mature enough to let them work their feelings out easier by taking himself out of the equation. Conrad's protective nature is another aspect that solidifies my stance. In "We'll Always Have Summer," Conrad's realization of his enduring love for Belly culminates in a powerful moment where he intervenes during her almost-wedding to Jeremiah. His heartfelt confession to Belly, admitting his mistakes and expressing his unwavering love, is a pivotal scene that encapsulates the depth of his feelings. Conrad's willingness to lay bare his emotions, despite knowing it might be too late, reflects his growth and his determination to fight for Belly. Moreover, Conrad's protectiveness is evident in subtler moments throughout the series. For instance, in "The Summer I Turned Pretty," when Belly gets drunk at the party, Conrad's quiet but firm intervention to ensure her safety shows his deep-seated concern for her well-being. These instances of silent guardianship reveal a layer of Conrad's character that is both tender and fiercely loyal. Conrad's journey towards emotional maturity is a compelling arc that makes him a more suitable match for Belly in the long run. Initially, his inability to communicate his feelings and his tendency to withdraw create tension and misunderstandings. However, as the series progresses, Conrad's growth becomes evident. His introspective nature allows him to reflect on his actions and learn from his mistakes. By the end of the series, Conrad's transformation is palpable. He learns to articulate his emotions more openly, exemplified by his candid conversations with Belly about their past and future. This maturity not only strengthens his relationship with Belly but also signifies his readiness for a deeper, more enduring connection. While Jeremiah's warmth and unwavering support make him an endearing character, it is Conrad's complexity, his moments of sacrifice, and his journey towards emotional growth that resonate more profoundly. Conrad's relationship with Belly is marked by a deep, multifaceted connection that evolves over time, weathering challenges and emerging stronger. These attributes make Conrad not only a compelling character but also the better match for Belly, solidifying my stance as Team Conrad.

My core purpose is rooted in the desire to enhance the lives of children with communication disorders, driven by a combination of personal experiences, cultural heritage, and professional aspirations. This journey has been deeply influenced and refined by my identity as a first-generation Filipino-American. Growing up in a bilingual household, I was constantly aware of the power and complexity of language. My parents, who emigrated from the Philippines, instilled in me the importance of effective communication as a bridge between diverse cultures and generations. However, my childhood was also marked by extreme shyness, which caused me significant discomfort and led to numerous missed opportunities. This shyness made me acutely aware of the struggles faced by those who have difficulty expressing themselves, further fueling my passion to help others overcome similar barriers. My passion for speech-language pathology emerged from this foundation. Witnessing family members and friends struggle with language barriers, I became acutely aware of the challenges faced by individuals with communication disorders. These experiences ignited a desire to help others overcome such barriers, fostering inclusion and equality in communication. Pursuing a BA in Public Health Policy further shaped my understanding of health disparities and the importance of accessible healthcare. This academic background provided me with a broader perspective on the systemic issues that affect marginalized communities, including those with speech and language difficulties. It reinforced my commitment to advocating for better resources and support systems for individuals with communication disorders. My Filipino identity has been instrumental in defining my core purpose. The values of resilience, empathy, and community, which are deeply ingrained in Filipino culture, have guided my personal and professional journey. Resilience has helped me navigate the challenges of being a first-generation college student, while empathy has driven my desire to make a positive impact on others' lives. The strong sense of community in Filipino culture has underscored the importance of giving back and supporting those in need. In my job as a library technician, I have developed practical skills and gained experience in assisting diverse populations. This position has not only honed my organizational abilities but also reinforced my commitment to education and communication. I am driven by passion and commitment to this field, shaped by my Filipino culture and heritage. By pursuing a career in speech-language pathology, I aim to bridge communication gaps and create inclusive environments where every child can thrive.
