FinalistBio
I am in college to become an aerospace/mechanical engineer with minors in meteorology and business. I just graduated high school with Composition 1 and 2, along with a 3-year pre-engineering course. I am also an engineering intern at a military contract facility (Shen Te Enterprises) that specializes in flight simulators. I am active in the community, where I volunteer for those in life-altering situations, and also promote sustainable practices.
Since losing my oldest brother to Glioblastoma Multiforme when he was 19 (it is very rare in children) and when I was 11, I have struggled with PTSD, Anxiety, and Depression (all officially diagnosed). Unfortunately, I also had to skip 2 years of school while we traveled for treatment. Although it was devastating, it inspired me to help others through their darkest times, especially those suffering from grief.
I have recently been diagnosed with both ADHD and IBD (UC), but through these obstacles, I have learned more about becoming the best version of myself. Despite the struggles I mentioned, I am very determined to positively impact the world and will do whatever it takes. I am a part of multiple activist groups throughout my college, where I lead my team.

You and Me
by Lily Yates
I lay my hand by your side,
When it was time to say goodbye,
I felt you slip away into the night,
I knew this could not be right.
But in those aching moments,
You still could see,
Not the part, that is worst,
But the best part of me.
You’re gone from my side,
But not from my life,
And in those hardest moments,
You look out for me.
There is one thing I pray,
When I’m up for blame,
In that darkest moment,
You love me just the same.
(Background: When I was 11 years old, I lost my oldest brother (19 y.o.) to Glioblastoma Multiforme (an extremely rare brain cancer in children). I wrote this after having vivid flashbacks of my final moments with him. He was one of my biggest inspirations and superheroes as a kid, and he still is. It is a remembrance of his loving character and that even though he is gone physically, he is still there helping me every step of the way.)
