I plan on incorporating reading instruction into my classroom by first teaching phonics, making sure my students are capable of sounding out the words they are reading, along with the words they are writing. This will both help them feel confident and independent in their reading and writing skills. Phonics is such a key portion of early learning and readiness for our youth to be able to read and write, and thus enjoy the fantasy, comedy, etc. book they are indulged in reading or writing themselves. In addition to phonics, I would promote phonemic awareness. Phonemic awareness will help my young students understand why and how consonants and vowels can be arranged, their rules, and how they make all the words in our language. Especially making sure to make connections in my student’s minds that every word needs a vowel, because "vowels glue letters together to make words". I will make sure to repeat that quote until every student represents that it is connected in their brain. In the classroom I assist in right now, they use a phonics awareness system called "Heggerty" which I would love to incorporate in my future classrooms, as I have first hand experience with seeing how helpful it is. In addition, I want to teach my students "heart words", which are words they need to know by sight, because they do not follow the rules of phonics and occur frequently in writing. For example, the words: one, said, she, he, him, off, and many more. Aside from phonics, I will incorporate reading out-loud, and my students reading to one another as much as possible. I would love to end each day before dismissal by reading a few short, developmentally friendly poems for my students, like Shel Silverstein's "Where the Sidewalk Ends" poems. By reading poetry to my students I will also be helping them recognize rhyme, rhyme pattern, stanza, and literary devices. Then, my younger students will be less intimidated by poetry when they study it in their future education years. Alongside the poetry, if there is a snack time, quiet time, or some kind of downtime available in my schedule, I will make an effort to have a story or stories either playing in the background or reading the book myself if I have a physical copy on-hand. This incorporation of literature everyday in my classroom will help promote and foster a love of reading from a young age, a love they will hopefully carry with them their entire lives.
