Hello! My name is Emma Staples. I am 18 years old and a freshman at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, majoring in Molecular Biology and minoring in Chemistry.
I am planning on going to medical school and becoming a doctor! In order to achieve my goals, I am focusing on five main categories: good grades, service, leadership, research, and shadowing! With these categories in mind, I have already accomplished so much in my first and second semester. I have so far maintained a 4.0 gpa in the honors program, and I am working with a graduate student to complete my own research project! Right now, my research focuses on ticks and what microclimate factors affect their nymphal emergences in the spring and fall. For service, not only have I completed over 15 hours, but I also put on my own service event called "For Our Feathered Friends" on March 27th. Many students volunteered to build over 48 bird toys for a local bird rescue!
I am also a part of many different clubs such as: Freshman Lead (where I get to design my own service projects), Tribeta (honors biology club), Clean 4 Cards (club for picking up trash on campus), MAPS (Multicultural Association of Prehealth Students), the poetry committee for the White Squirrel Literary Magazine, and the Lions Club (a service organization)!
I also have big goals for the future. This summer I plan on volunteering at Owensboro Health and volunteering for a nonprofit where we host a radio show to read local newspapers for the blind. I also plan on participating in lots of shadowing opportunities at Owensboro Health!
