My struggle with the many and rare autoimmune disorders I have, has resulted in my desire to not only want to become a nurse but an entrepreneurial nurse.
While being a patient, multiple times in the hospital , I was intrigued but also disheartened at times at the miscommunication between doctors and nurses. Doctors would come in for a moment and leave the nurses to carry the burden of the patient care.
I want to do it differently, I want my own midwifery clinic where we see mother and baby throughout the pregnancy and afterward to guid and care for both before during and one year after birth.
I want mothers provided with good quality care where we can reach out and see post partum depression setting in and get the moms help they need immediately, help them with first newborn babies or babies with special needs. I think we forget once mom has had the baby she still needs care and love and attention; more attention is required to ensure moms are looked after.
Second, babies we need to see babies are latching on, when do they need early intervention, I think we are missing the ball and could intervene if we saw mother and baby together more, even in their own home and environment. Picking up on subtle delays could help children immensely with getting referrals to Speech, Physical and Occupational Therapy to intervene at a faster rate ti prevent further delays and promote better outcomes.
Finally we can’t leave out dads . We also need to educate dads more on what to expect with hormonal imbalances during and after mom has baby what’s normal and not , how to help with breastfeeding changes.
I also want to change how we look at pain, look at other countries and how they help mothers through the pain of labor and delivery . I want to study abroad and see how other perform such feet with midwives mostly. I want the birth experience and postpartum experience to be more comforting and compassionate than what I’ve seen just with my own disease.
I want to open a clinic full of midwives and doctors with this wholesome holistic approach so moms and babies get the care they deserve from everyone not just one piece of a group.
I’m liberated and excited that through my eyes and my experience and suffering with my own disease I’m able to see that medicine doesn’t have to be cruel. We can have compassionate care , less pain in our care, more communication in our care and I hope my clinic comes into fruition and people learn from it and others follow suite.
No one should suffer as I have.
