I will never forget the day diabetes flipped my sister's world on its head. It was September 19th, 2019. My parents and my sister walked through the door, and I noticed that all three of them were crying. I knew my sister was going to a doctor’s appointment, but I didn’t expect this. I had figured it was just because she wasn't getting enough sleep or something similar along those lines; she looked tired all the time, and unbeknownst to us, it was actually the diabetes to blame. When they said she had been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, I was shocked. That day was a scary day, because the doctor immediately told my parents they had to take my sister to the Childrens’ Hospital, and this was all happening as we just got home from school. She had dangerously high blood sugar when they tested her at the hospital. From that day on, it was a whirlwind for my parents as they learned how to do insulin injections, and calculating carbs for every meal, as well as monitoring blood sugar corrections.
Experiencing my sister's diagnosis has made me much more aware of what diabetes is and how serious it is, both type one and two. I used to go from saying "I'm eating too much sugar, so I'm definitely going to get diabetes," to now correcting someone if they say that. Though I am not diabetic, I cannot imagine how annoying it would be to constantly hear that statement, considering my sister has gone through the real situation. Honestly, it annoys me that so many people have such a lack of understanding of how diabetes really works. I can't imagine how they deal with that all the time; I know for a fact it would drive me insane!
Diabetes, both type one and two do run through my family line. That means that my future kids may potentially be diagnosed with diabetes at a young age or when they are adults. If my future kids have type one diabetes, it would require another level of care to which young kids already need a lot at such a young age. However, I would have a basic foundation of understanding about the chronic disease having been a witness to my sister dealing with her diabetes for years.
I have first-handedly watched my sister transform from a sick, fragile girl to a beautiful, strong, intelligent young woman. Though diabetes will always be with her, it has sure not stopped her from living a life of joy! I am so proud of how far she has overcome and can’t wait to see what is in store for my little sister. All this to say, diabetes is by no means an easy journey whatsoever; I’ve witnessed the dark low lows, and the bright highs diabetes brings to life. I like to view it as just another “flavor” and chaos diabetes brings to our family, but reminds us that things we expect may look a little bit different than what we have in mind.
