Bio

Hi there! My name is Elijah and I am currently a student at James J. Ferris High school. I relish law, dance, and painting. Through my passions, I hope to transmit the comeliness of following your dreams and aspirations. During the most difficult times, hope is something you give yourself. That's the meaning of inner strength and discipline. The essence of life is having the ability to persevere through obstacles. Following my own dreams is what will internally and externally make me blissful and it will fill that void that has been empty on the days that I find myself unmotivated. With this message, I hope to reach as many people as possible! My goal is to inspire people from all backgrounds and demonstrate how our thoughts are limitless; subsequently, revealing how anything is possible despite any challenges that they may face. One of my long-term goals is to become a role model in my country of origin, the United States, and eliminate racial discrimination from people of all backgrounds. When I graduate, I wish to spread cognizance about this issue and potentiate people from any age bracket so that I can provide them with an incipient way of viewing things. In addition, I hope to renovate tranquility and bliss in my country with the intention of conveying that great things happen from pursuing your dreams and persevering through any adversity that you face.

Loss defined by Google states that it is “the fact or process of losing something or someone.” From my experiences, I no longer look at loss as the fact or process of losing something or someone. From facing the rough reality that the people that I've shared valuable memories with are no longer present in my life from the awakening of growth or the transitioning to death. The day I redefined what loss meant to me was the day I stopped being my authentic self. It was the day I made loving myself no longer a necessity to my character. I lost visual perception of who I was and listened to the opinions of people in an endeavor to transmute who I was to feel validated. It instead made me become burdened with melancholic thoughts and the result of that inevitably introduced me to depression. For the past three years, my depression left an ominous tone on my life and my days began to mold together to create this endless and suffocating loop that I’ve endured for so long that escaping it seemed impossible. I commenced questioning whether or not it was possible for a heart to still break even when it stops beating—if that was the only solution to stopping my pain permanently. The world is truly ugly and everybody seems to be okay with it. The anger, the level of anger that some experience makes it seems that everyone is out to make everyone not seem human and I no longer want to be a part of it. Ripping out so much of myself to be remedied of things faster will only cause me to go bankrupt at an early age and have less to offer when I start with something or someone new. I’ve come to the realization that happiness can be found even during your darkest moments in life once you learn to love and trust yourself first before loving and trusting someone else. I now learned to use my experience with depression as a source to spread love and promote authenticity to everyone.

What draws me to a dual-degree in business and international studies is how it allows you to help drive change with innovation, where new and improved products enable new markets to be developed and distributed to customers interested in the product. Amazing entrepreneurs have the ability to change the way we live and work on local and national bases. When successful, their innovations may improve the standards of living, and can further increase and create wealth with entrepreneurial ventures. Which can help contribute to a growing and strong economy. Having a dual-degree in business and international studies will be the beginning of a long and desired journey as an entrepreneur. A dual-degree in these academic programs will help me produce new products and services in the future for people. This can produce a cascading effect, where it helps in stimulating related businesses or sectors that must support the new venture, furthering economic development. For example, a few information technology companies advanced in the rail sector industry in the United Kingdom during the global pandemic in 2020. The industry quickly overcame some significant barriers, including the need to introduce flexible ticketing options that reflect recent changes to the working practices and the need for effective communication to restore balance while using new concepts of transportation (due to COVID-19). My experience with the Jersey City Youth Council has also played a vital role in my interest in a dual-degree in business and international studies. When I joined the Jersey City Youth Council in 2019, my peers and I had a conversation about a difficult moment that we all faced during school hours. We discussed a man with a weapon that targeted a police officer and nine people at a church in Jersey City. How he specifically chose to target Jewish people. Everyone‘s experience after the incident commenced was different, but some of the common emotions that we felt were frightening, traumatized, and hopeless. We were all told to remain inside of school until further notice. Students weren’t allowed to go out of the hallways, get a drink of water, or do anything outside of our classrooms. Our country unfortunately is notorious for gun violence, so it wasn’t a surprise that it occurred. The knowledge that I’ve gained from my peers, showed how similar we are despite our appearances being different. That your ethnicity or skin color shouldn’t become a reason for you to harm someone. This experience has forced me to open my eyes to realize how our society can become corrupted over time. It's essential to understand what it takes to change this, by simply making a contribution to a global issue similar to this where businesses and international affairs intersect. With the information obtained in business and international studies, I will contribute by becoming flexible and compassionate regardless of age bracket. I want to use the materials and knowledge that I've gathered to help people be safe, and happy in their community.

What you learn and how you grow from experience is very important to take into consideration when attending any university. Learning is a necessary part of acquiring critical thinking skills and discovering new ways of relating to people from different cultures or religions. College offers several opportunities for learning and growth outside of classrooms. By participating in local events, I will be exposed to people of all backgrounds which can help expand my knowledge and have a deep comprehension of their culture and lifestyle. Attending these local events will have a direct impact on me and a positive impact on the community. Furthermore, local events like sports competitions will help me appreciate these moments in my life and allow me to build relationships with people. Local events also provide opportunities for skills development and volunteering. For example, in 2020, I volunteered to protest during my law internship to spread awareness about an important piece of land (Caven’s Point) that would’ve been taken away from the citizens of Jersey City. Volunteering was an amazing experience and I would love to volunteer again to gain valuable information on how I can contribute to improving the community.

Once my school shut down because of COVID-19, it felt like my clock started ticking. I thought to myself, “Will I turn my athlete image to dust, my “one-of-the-guys” status into debris? Yes. I’m a kid with an explosive strapped to me. A truth that could crater my entire existence and fling shrapnel into the future my parents dream for me; the future that I’ve dreamed for myself. Suddenly I find those dreams disappearing within seconds because of the demoralizing effect of feeling imprisoned. COVID has forced me to feel uncomfortable and exhausted. The feeling of being drained physically and emotionally was only the beginning. It became my responsibility to finish what I started in school, but I didn’t realize the journey during this path I was forced to take would be so complex. While in quarantine, I remained stagnant between deciding what I wanted and who I wanted to be. Attempting to “find myself” with everything shut down felt nearly impossible. Back when school was available, people saw me as a dedicated, serious, passionate, happy person. But where is he? What happened to him? He left me behind hopeless and broken without even a goodbye. Once he walked out that door he left me torn, teaching me to live without it. That was the past, and the reality is I have no idea what I’m doing. I’m scared--scared of the possibilities that I will not seize to meet my future self. To live while being successful and happy with what they have. Happy with who they’ve become. How coming to the realization where I commence to find love, not in others, but myself. I’ve been searching for these answers but was left empty-handed. It was like a constant battle of fear versus happiness. There were times where I wanted to feel like I am living and not just merely existing. Going from an optimistic teenage boy in high school to a melancholic teenage boy in quarantine that is stuck in his thoughts constantly. I felt like my teenage years thus far was limbo. I was somewhere between being a kid and an adult and society insist that I should be mature and express myself but the minute that I do, it tells me to shut up, but I knew that I couldn’t allow this pandemic to corrupt me. Something that I have learned from my experience during COVID-19 thus far is that wholehearted living is about engaging in our lives from a place of worthiness. The method of cultivating the courage, compassion, and connection to wake up in the morning and think, “No matter what gets done and how much is left undone, I am enough.” It’s going to bed at night and thinking, “Yes, I’m imperfect, vulnerable, and sometimes afraid, but that doesn’t change the truth that I’m also capable of being brave and worthy of love and belonging.”
