I grew up in a household where neither of my parents could attend college. My dad could graduate high school in Mexico, but my mother could only make it until middle school. My parents immigrated to this country hoping for a better life and opportunities, working many hours to provide my siblings and me a better life. Growing up and seeing their hard work and supportive care toward us made me appreciate all their sacrifice and has motivated me to value education and work. As a first-generation college student, I am encouraged by my parents so I can honor their hard work and sacrifice. The reason I am pursuing a college degree in the STEM Field is that I have always liked working with technology and problem-solving. Ever since I was a kid, I was intrigued by how things worked and I remember that I would always dismantle my toys and household items to see how they work. As a child, I would try to pretend I was an inventor and would try to make things and would take notes in a journal. Now I feel very fortunate to be on a career path that allows me to do this and fulfill the dream that I had as a child. However, I am currently in need of tuition aid to keep this dream alive. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to pursue a STEM education and am hopeful for the support that will allow me to continue on this path. Choosing to major in software engineering at Ferris State University was a decision that worked best for me. Primarily because I can attend classes entirely online, which helps me to be more flexible with my time, and it facilitates me in helping my family as well since they need my support now. Throughout out my time at Ferris State University, I have realized how thrilled I get when I am able to create something from scratch, find solutions to real-life problems, and build up knowledge with the hopes that one day I will work somewhere or make something that could change the lives of people for the better. As a first-time college Latino student, I am aware that we are underrepresented in the STEM fields. I would like to break barriers and serve as a role model for my family and many others. My college journey has been a challenge and filled with many obstacles, but all these obstacles that I have surpassed have made me a better person. To conclude, my motivation to pursue a degree in college as a first-generation student is rooted in my family's sacrifices and my passion and dreams in STEM. With the support of this scholarship, I am confident in my ability to achieve these aspirations and make a meaningful impact on the world.
