Hello, my name is Edgar Mauricio Rios, and I am a passionate storyteller, filmmaker, and first-generation Mexican-American college student currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Radio-Television-Film at the University of Texas at Austin. Growing up in Ciudad Juarez, I experienced the harsh realities of a city plagued by violence, which significantly shaped my worldview and ignited my love for storytelling as a means of escape and understanding. My journey has been one of overcoming obstacles, embracing my cultural heritage, and striving to make a meaningful impact through the power of media and visual arts. From a young age, I was captivated by the profound impact movies and television have on society, offering experiences and perspectives that transcend individual lives. My storytelling is not just about creating a world in which individuals can view or read, but rather a world where they immerse themselves in the lives of people and places. An alternate reality, diving deep into the tunneling sea of infinite potentiality. A quote that catapulted my views on my personal life and storytelling came from Atticus Finch, "climb inside of his skin and walk around in it" (Harper Lee). Reading this my sophomore year led me to finally give meaning to what I had always done since I was little. But it also gave me a saving light amidst the fog that enveloped my life, finally being able to perceive the reality that has been in front of me this whole time... everyone has a story. Filled with laughter, sorrow, euphoria, and tranquility, from which I took part and began to look at people with more fascination to hear their stories, but to also tell my own. As my perspective grew so did my narrative capabilities, when constructing a story I like to show as much emotion to these characters as possible, not only relying on the story conflict but giving readers/viewers something that they can relate to. When looking at psychology this is prominent due to humans evolving to be social animals, connecting through the art of storytelling and empathy. My style of writing utilizes not only allegories, and characters from which audiences can relate but I utilize other fields of thought to elevate my stories. Some include philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, and when creating films different ways of engineering cameras, color theory, angle perspective, and many more. But I like to go deeper, since like I said humans are social animals that connect through stories, but they are also very curious. From this, I unitize the structures of alternative ways of storytelling. When looking at many forums across the internet people tend to gravitate to Artificial Reality Games, an alternative way to storytelling that breaks the fourth wall. Involving many "easter eggs" and other forms of messaging that come together to further develop a narrative. My personal favorite is auditory and visual primes, also known as subliminal. Which is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as being "(of a stimulus or mental process) below the threshold of sensation or consciousness; perceived by or affecting someone's mind without their being aware of it." This inspired me to try to research in my institution and hopefully, double major in Neuroscience to find other ways to get audiences more involved to "climb inside of his skin and walk around in it" (Harper Lee). Providing different stimuli to the brain with primes unitizing the scenes to further push the walls of storytelling. I don't just stop at telling stories I try to fully immerse my audience into worlds that connect people, and entertain, but also give them an opportunity for any individual to escape their world just like it did when I wasn't able to. The film's surreal visuals and exploration of human nature inspired me to pursue a career where I could create unique, transformative stories that resonate with diverse audiences. This inspiration led me to the University of Texas at Austin, where I am now immersed in a comprehensive curriculum that covers screenwriting, directing, cinematography, and editing. The hands-on learning and access to state-of-the-art facilities at UT Austin are equipping me with the technical and creative skills necessary to succeed in the industry. My ultimate career goal is to become a renowned filmmaker and media producer, creating content that not only entertains but also educates and empowers. I aspire to tell stories that bridge cultural gaps, highlight underrepresented voices, and challenge societal norms. Through my work, I aim to shine a light on issues affecting underrepresented communities, particularly those related to immigration, identity, and social justice. By telling authentic stories that reflect the diverse experiences of people from different backgrounds, I hope to contribute to a more inclusive and equitable media landscape. In my community, I want to serve as a role model for young aspiring artists, especially those from marginalized backgrounds. My goal is to mentor and support the next generation of storytellers, helping them navigate the challenges of the industry and encouraging them to use their voices to effect positive change. By creating opportunities for collaboration and fostering a supportive creative environment, I aim to build a community of artists committed to using their talents for the greater good. The rapidly advancing technology in the media industry excites me, particularly the potential of artificial intelligence, digital art, and virtual reality to revolutionize storytelling. I am eager to experiment with these tools to create immersive and interactive experiences that engage audiences in novel ways. By embracing these innovations, I hope to push the boundaries of traditional storytelling and inspire others to think creatively. In conclusion, my passion for storytelling, my commitment to my cultural heritage, and my determination to make a difference drive my career aspirations in the field of Radio-Television-Film. Through my education at UT Austin, I am gaining the skills and knowledge necessary to achieve my goals and make a meaningful impact in my community and the industry. I look forward to a future where my work as a filmmaker not only entertains but also inspires and empowers others to see the world through a different lens.

Being a first-generation Mexican-American college graduate is a profound source of passion for me because it represents not only my personal achievements but also the collective dreams and sacrifices of my family and community. My passion stems from a deep-rooted sense of responsibility and gratitude towards my parents, who bravely navigated the challenges of immigrating to the United States to provide better opportunities for their children. Growing up in Ciudad Juarez during a time of intense violence and uncertainty, my parents shielded me from the dangers lurking outside by keeping me indoors. This confinement, while protective, also limited my early experiences of the world. However, it was through this very limitation that I discovered the power of storytelling and the transformative potential of education. My initial perspective of the world was shaped by the narratives I consumed on Cartoon Network and Disney Channel, and it was these stories that ignited my imagination and gave me hope for a brighter future. As a first-generation college student, I am breaking barriers that my parents and many in my community faced. I am forging a path that was previously inaccessible, and this journey is not just for me but for every young person who looks up to me as a source of inspiration. My passion is fueled by the desire to honor my parents' sacrifices and to demonstrate that their struggles were not in vain. I want to show that with determination, resilience, and hard work, it is possible to overcome the odds and achieve one's dreams. Moreover, being a first-generation college graduate allows me to challenge and change the narrative for underrepresented minorities in higher education. It gives me the platform to advocate for diversity and inclusion, ensuring that voices like mine are heard and valued. I am passionate about using my education to create stories that reflect the richness of my cultural heritage and to highlight the experiences of those who have been historically marginalized. This passion is also deeply personal. As someone who has navigated the complexities of identity and belonging, I understand the importance of representation. I want to contribute to a world where Mexican-American children see themselves reflected in the media, where their stories are told with authenticity and respect. My educational journey equips me with the tools to be a storyteller who can bridge cultural divides and foster empathy. In conclusion, my passion for being a first-generation Mexican-American college graduate is rooted in my family's history, my personal experiences, and my commitment to making a difference. It is about honoring the past, empowering the present, and inspiring the future. It is about using my education and voice to create a more inclusive and just world, where every individual's story is valued and celebrated.
      Mad Grad Scholarship
My passion for visual arts and storytelling is deeply rooted in my upbringing and personal experiences. Growing up in Ciudad Juarez, amidst the cartel violence that plagued my hometown, I was often confined to the safety of my home. This isolation turned my attention to the worlds I saw on television. Shows from Cartoon Network and Disney Channel offered me a window into different realities, igniting my imagination and shaping my desire to create immersive narratives. This early exposure to the power of storytelling became my refuge and my inspiration. My "why" is driven by a profound belief in the transformative power of storytelling. Stories can bridge cultures, evoke empathy, and inspire change. As a first-generation Mexican-American, I have witnessed firsthand the lack of representation and the need for diverse voices in media. This has fueled my commitment to telling stories that reflect the multifaceted experiences of underrepresented communities. I want to create narratives that not only entertain but also challenge societal norms and encourage viewers to see the world through different perspectives. The advancements in technology, such as artificial intelligence, digital art, and automatic scriptwriting tools, have opened up unprecedented possibilities for creators. These tools are not merely technical advancements; they are extensions of our creative capabilities. They allow us to push the boundaries of what is possible in storytelling. As a student of the arts, I am excited to leverage these technologies to enhance my work while maintaining the core human elements that make stories resonate. One of my lifelong projects is to develop a TV show that explores the intersection of culture, identity, and the human condition. This show would be a tapestry of diverse characters and narratives, each reflecting the complexity and richness of their backgrounds. Drawing from my own experiences and those of my community, I want to create a series that delves into themes of belonging, resilience, and transformation. The use of AI and digital tools can help in creating more dynamic and interactive storytelling experiences, allowing viewers to engage with the narrative on multiple levels. Additionally, I have a vision for a comic book series that blends traditional storytelling with innovative visual techniques. Inspired by the surreal fantasy visuals of "The Holy Mountain" by Alejandro Jodorowsky, I aim to create a series that challenges conventional storytelling through its avant-garde art style and complex themes. This project would utilize digital art platforms to experiment with new forms of visual expression, creating a unique and immersive experience for readers. Ultimately, my motivation lies in the desire to make a meaningful impact through my work. I want to contribute to a more inclusive and empathetic media landscape, where stories from all walks of life are told and celebrated. By combining my passion for storytelling with the advancements in technology, I am committed to pushing the boundaries of creative expression and leaving a lasting legacy in the world of visual arts and design.

I feel most creative during the quiet hours of the night when the world outside is still, and my mind is free to wander without interruption. These moments of solitude allow me to delve deeply into my thoughts and ideas, drawing from a well of experiences and emotions that have shaped my life. Growing up in Ciudad Juarez, labeled the most dangerous city in the world around 2010, I spent much of my childhood indoors, sheltered by my parents from the cartel wars that ravaged the streets of Northern Mexico. This unique upbringing profoundly influenced my storytelling, giving me a perspective shaped by both isolation and a rich inner world fueled by media and entertainment. My initial exposure to the world came through the lens of CartoonNetwork and Disney Channel. These vibrant, imaginative worlds became my escape, allowing me to experience life beyond my immediate surroundings. This early fascination with storytelling has stayed with me, evolving into a desire to create immersive narratives that connect deeply with audiences. A pivotal moment in my creative journey came during my sophomore year when I encountered the quote from Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird, "climb inside of his skin and walk around in it." This quote encapsulated what I had been striving to do in my storytelling; to create characters and worlds that feel real and lived-in, inviting audiences to experience life from different perspectives. My lived experiences and identity are woven into every aspect of my work. Growing up amidst the challenges of Ciudad Juarez, I developed a keen sense of empathy and a deep appreciation for the power of storytelling to bridge gaps and foster understanding. I incorporate elements from philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience into my narratives to create complex, relatable characters and thought-provoking plots. I also employ innovative filmmaking techniques, such as alternative camera angles, color theory, and subliminal messaging, to enhance the emotional impact of my stories. One of my favorite methods is using auditory and visual primes to subtly influence the audience's perception and emotional response. This approach aligns with my interest in neuroscience, a field I am exploring with the intention of double majoring. By understanding how the brain processes stories and emotions, I aim to push the boundaries of traditional storytelling and create truly immersive experiences. Attached are examples of my artwork, including short films and written narratives that reflect my creative vision. Each piece is a testament to my journey, blending my lived experiences with a deep passion for storytelling. Through my work, I strive to offer audiences an opportunity to escape their realities, just as storytelling did for me during my childhood, and to connect with the diverse tapestry of human experiences.

Growing up in Ciudad Juarez, labeled the most dangerous city in the world around 2010, I found solace in storytelling. My parents kept me sheltered indoors to protect me from the cartel wars that ravaged the streets of Northern Mexico. This isolation led me to find an outlet in media and entertainment, immersing myself in worlds presented through CartoonNetwork and Disney Channel. These experiences shaped my initial perspective of the world and sparked a lifelong passion for storytelling. I am pursuing a career in the performing arts, specifically in the area of storytelling through film and writing. For as long as I can remember, storytelling has been my craft. It began in my childhood as a means of escape and evolved into a profound way to connect with others and explore the human experience. One pivotal moment that deepened my commitment to this art was reading Atticus Finch’s quote from "To Kill a Mockingbird" during my sophomore year: "climb inside of his skin and walk around in it." This quote gave meaning to what I had always done intuitively and illuminated my path forward. My goal is to create immersive worlds where audiences can fully engage with the lives of characters and the intricacies of their stories. To achieve this, I incorporate elements from philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience into my narratives. I am particularly interested in using innovative filmmaking techniques, such as alternative camera angles, color theory, and subliminal messaging, to enhance the storytelling experience. One of my favorite methods is the use of auditory and visual primes to subtly influence the audience’s perception and emotional response. I am currently exploring the field of Neuroscience with the intention of double majoring. I aim to research and develop new ways to engage audiences, pushing the boundaries of traditional storytelling. By integrating neuroscientific principles, I hope to create narratives that are not only entertaining but also deeply immersive and impactful, allowing audiences to "climb inside" the experiences of the characters. In the long term, I aspire to become a pioneering storyteller who blends the art of narrative with scientific insights. Currently, I attend the University of Texas at Austin, majoring in Radio-Television-FIlm but I will be double majoring in Neuroscience in the spring. I want to craft stories that offer a profound escape, just as storytelling did for me during my childhood. Through my work, I aim to connect people, evoke empathy, and provide a space where individuals can experience new realities and perspectives.
Little Miami Brewing Native American Scholarship Award
As I opened my DNA results I uncovered the untold stories of my Indigenous American ancestors. A surprise to everyone due to my paternal side of the family is a big unknown since my grandfather abandoned my father at the age of 5. Being from El Paso and Juarez the stories of natives were silenced and pushed further north to New Mexico or San Elisario, Texas. Given this along with the blank history of my family, I didn't grow up hearing about stories of culture leaving a gap deep inside me that urged me to find out the truth. Being a sophomore in high school I had somewhat of an idea of the history of the mass mistreatment of natives in the US. I had to start somewhere so I contacted my grandmother to find out any sort of information that she might be aware of, apart from the many questions that I had going through my mind. She told me that both she and my grandfather have native ancestry but since my grandparents grew up in Mexico it was taboo to even mention it due to the lingering influence of the Spanish Caste system, resulting in also her being somewhat unaware of our blood. She mentioned how throughout her side of the family we have Indigenous blood from areas of Northern Chihuahua, Weste Texas, and Southern New Mexico, but that my grandfather's side had Náhuatl and Otomí blood, which made sense since he was from Mexico City. She also mentioned how when I was little everyone used to always say that I looked like Roshan, the baby son of a tribal chief from the Ice Age. When thinking of it I was always bullied by my eyes, due to having my "ojos rasgados" or having Asian-looking eyes, resulting in me always wondering why my eyes were shaped like this. But my grandma gave me the answer to some of my questions. She passed me to my great-grandmother because she after all could give me more information after she was 93 years old. Filled with excitement I repeated my questions to her, to which she told me about how her mother was a fully proud indigenous woman. However, due to the persecution of natives in Mexico, she had to "assimilate" how she was forced to marry a French man due to being so poor that she was arranged to marry someone who was white to "menorah la Raza" to "improve the blood." She even showed me a picture of her, from which although forced to be silent about her heritage you could still her strong indigenous blood even when there were no words spoken. This information filled me with pride about my family's history but also with enragement to the oppression and ignorance of society towards Native Americans. As of today, I am trying to become more involved in native culture, even though I might not know the specific tribes or have grown up surrounded by indigenous culture, I now get to slowly fill up that missing history, and say with pride that I am of indigenous decent.

Storytelling was a personal outlet when growing up in CD. Juarez, as my hometown was labeled the most dangerous city in the world (circa 2010). When I was a child, the taste of meat never appealed to me, and this unexpected preference guided me toward embracing a vegan lifestyle. Unlike other kids with Hispanic or Native backgrounds, I didn't share the same enjoyment for our traditional dishes that were deeply rooted in our culture. This disconnect from my culinary heritage often frustrated and angered my mother. Little did she know, my journey towards a plant-based diet had already begun to take shape. One particular memory stands out vividly in my mind. I attended a party where, in line with the customs of my family's ranch, a live goat was brought in and eventually slaughtered for the feast. Witnessing this process left me traumatized and utterly bewildered. At just five years old, the connection between the living animal and the food on my plate became painfully clear. From that point onward, a significant shift occurred within me, and I developed a strong aversion to consuming meat. As I grew older, my aversion transformed into a genuine concern for the ethical implications surrounding the mass production of meat. I delved into learning about factory farming and the horrifying conditions that animals endure to satisfy our appetites. The stark reality of meat shops and the systematic killing of animals deeply disturbed me. I couldn't bear the thought of contributing to such a system. However, I also recognized the complexity of the issue. While the ethical implications weighed heavily on my conscience, I understood that completely eradicating the consumption of animal products was not a realistic solution. Throughout history, humans have relied on animal products for sustenance, and cultural traditions tied to meat consumption run deep. I found myself grappling with the dilemma of wanting to advocate for the well-being of animals while also acknowledging the necessity of providing sustenance for a growing population. My journey toward veganism became a quest for balance. I began exploring alternative dietary choices, incorporating plant-based proteins into my meals and gradually reducing my consumption of animal products. These changes allowed me to align my values with my dietary choices without eliminating an entire food group. During this transition, I discovered the incredible variety and deliciousness of plant-based cuisine. I learned to appreciate the vibrant flavors and creative combinations that vegetables, fruits, legumes, and grains had to offer. This newfound passion for plant-based cooking inspired me to experiment in the kitchen, developing my recipes and eagerly sharing them with friends and family. Today, I proudly identify as a vegan. This label encompasses not only my ethical beliefs and deep concern for animal welfare but also my unwavering commitment to sustainable living. By choosing a plant-based lifestyle, I believe that even in my small corner of the universe, I am making a positive impact on the world. My journey toward veganism was driven by a combination of personal experiences and ethical concerns. Disney holds a profound and deeply personal significance in my life that goes far beyond its role as a collection of animated films or a theme park. It has been a source of solace, comfort, and inspiration during one of the most challenging periods my family and I have ever faced. In the midst of my mother's battle with cancer, uncertainty and fear cast their heavy shadows over our lives. Hospital visits, waiting rooms, and the rollercoaster of emotions became our new reality. It was during this tumultuous journey that Disney movies emerged as a coping mechanism, offering a sanctuary of joy and hope precisely when we needed it the most. I can vividly remember those moments when my family and I would gather on the couch, seeking solace in the enchanting tales, captivating characters, and heartwarming messages that Disney movies effortlessly delivered. These films became a refuge from the harsh realities we confronted on a daily basis, providing us with a temporary escape into worlds where love conquered all, dreams were realized, and magic was palpable. They served as a reminder that even in the face of the most daunting battles, there would always be a glimmer of light to guide us through. The strength of Disney's storytelling became a lifeline during those arduous times. The movies we watched, ranging from timeless classics to contemporary adventures, became a shared language through which we navigated our complex emotions. Together, we laughed, we cried, and we found solace in the simple joy of immersing ourselves in those vibrant and captivating worlds. And then, a momentous turning point arrived: my mother was declared a cancer survivor. The news flooded our hearts with overwhelming gratitude, relief, and a renewed sense of hope. To commemorate this monumental milestone and celebrate the resilience that had carried us to this point, our entire family embarked on a pilgrimage to the realm where dreams come true: Disneyland in Los Angeles. Stepping through the gates of Disneyland was an ethereal experience, as if we were entering a world where magic permeated every nook and cranny. The park overflowed with an infectious energy, echoing with the laughter and joy of countless families seeking solace in the same sanctuary. As we wandered through whimsical lands and encountered beloved characters, the weight of our past struggles seemed to dissipate, replaced by a profound sense of joy, wonder, and infinite possibilities. Every ride, every interaction, and every magical moment at Disneyland felt like an exultation of life, love, and resilience. We reveled in the exhilaration of roller coasters, immersed ourselves in the spectacle of parades, and allowed our inner child to frolic freely amidst the enchantment that enveloped us. The smiles etched across our faces mirrored the light that had returned to our lives—a light that Disney had helped keep aglow during our darkest days. Disneyland became so much more than an amusement park; it transformed into a symbol of triumph over adversity, a testament to the strength and unity of our family, and a reminder that dreams can materialize even in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges. It became a pilgrimage of healing, a celebration of the love that had sustained us, and a testament to the power of resilience. The memories we forged at Disneyland continue to radiate within our hearts, serving as a perpetual reminder that life's trials can be overcome and that the magic of Disney possesses the ability to heal, inspire, and foster lasting bonds. Disney taught us that even amidst life's tempests, moments of respite, joy, and enchantment eagerly await our embrace.
