Bio

Hello! My name is Emma Albán. I’m a high school senior at Monson High School and a dedicated dancer of 16 years, a pianist of 10 years, friend, daughter, and sister. Always keeping myself busy with school, sports and clubs, working hard is nothing new for me. An honor roll student throughout my entire education career, I strive to integrate my life experiences into my studies. Going into high school I was quiet, being one of the few hispanic students at the school I had attended. At the beginning, I thought I could get through the entirety of high school never speaking up. When sophomore year began I made the decision to switch to MHS. While still scared, I decided to break through and put my right foot forward into a new experience. Still being one of the only hispanic students, I don't let my fear of being judged hide me away. Enrolling in AP and honor classes, I now sit in the front of classes not afraid to ask for help. Interested in studying environmental and renewable science resources, science has always gained my attention. With the field always evolving , I hope to one day lead a research project and make a difference within the field. I hold a strong belief that the definition of “success” varies from person to person depending on each unique experience. Thousands of different experiences ignites evolving studies within the field. Gaining the proper education and experience in order to achieve my goals and personal definition of success keeps me working hard even when the days are long and tiring. Thank you for your consideration!

Hi, my name is Emma Alban, a 17 year old senior in the small school Monson High School, Massachusetts. Ever since I was little, I've always been fascinated by science. Whether it’s as simple as the basics of erosion or as complex as perfecting the understanding of paleomagnetism, finding the answer to why something is the way it is has always stuck with me. Since my sophomore year of high school I've been interested in pursuing a career in environmental science and business. More specifically, I'm striving to work with the development and commercialization of bioenergies. Our planet houses over a trillion living organisms. Big, small, and microscopic. 8.2 billion of those living organisms are humans. With an ever developing society, It’s no surprise that our world runs on fuel. In the United States alone, by 2021 there were a total of 278,063,737 personal and commercial vehicles registered. That’s 278,063,737 vehicles that need fuel whether it be gasoline, electricity, diesel, or propane. With many common fuel sources like gasoline or diesel, many of these sources are not reliable. With the introduction of fully electric cars or hybrid cars, gas use has decreased, but still is a growing issue with the environment. By 2022, over 36.6 billion tons a year of CO2 produced by the burning of fossil fuels have contributed to the pollution of the atmosphere and our planet. An estimated 28% of those emissions come from vehicles and transportation. It is only a matter of time until those emissions grow larger in amounts and cause irreversible damage to our planet. It is my passion to help change the odds of our planet's destruction through the use of fossil fuels by working to commercialize and further develop sustainable energy. There is no way that the world is going to stop using energy, so why not further develop sustainable ways to fuel our energy hungry society? Whether it's using crops like corn, algae, solar, or hydroelectric power it is my passion to further my knowledge and understanding of not only the creation of bioenergy, but the works of the business behind it in order to increase the amount of sustainable energy used and lower the use of fossil fuels. My absolute dream is to major in Northeastern University's Environmental and Sustainability Sciences along with a minor in Management. I've been working hard throughout my entire education career to fuel this major goal of mine. I've spent much of my time learning about natural sciences taking numerous courses in high school, learning sustainability through Earth Club, as well as taking entrepreneurship, marketing, and accounting courses in school. As I stated earlier, I go to a small high school, very small. My graduating class consists of 27 people in which I'm the only person interested in an environmental science major. It's been an independent journey, but it's my passion to my core to work with sustainability for our environment. Even though I may be the only person in my class taking this career choice, I've received so much support from my peers, teachers, friends, and family as they know that sustainability isn't just a trait of mine, it's a big part of who I am. Having the opportunity to further my possibilities in the studies of sustainable energy is my main focus I'm working towards. I hope to make a difference in our world to ensure each solution for energy problems is sustainable and environmentally friendly. I know my burning passion will strive me through my journey and I appreciate every opportunity given to me. Thank you for your time and consideration!

I've spent much of my time learning about natural sciences taking numerous courses in high school, learning sustainability through Earth Club, Earth and Space Science, as well as Botany. Through these courses and my own personal research, I've implemented many sustainable habits in my everyday life. My family for years would use nearly three cases of plastic water bottles a month. When I developed a passion for sustainability, I cut back the use immensely and have encouraged all of my family members to use reusable water bottles. I'm always using minimal disposable items such as paper towels, plastic bags and reusable silverware, even if it isn't of the most convenience. As passionate as I am about sustainable energy, I'm so fortunate and happy to have a Partial Zero Emission Vehicle. It can be challenging as a 17 year old to implement sustainability, but with effort I've been able to maintain a way of living that helps reduce my carbon footprint. I plan on majoring in Environmental and Sustainability Resources with a minor in Management, I've received so much support from my peers, teachers, friends, and family as they know that sustainability isn't just a trait of mine, it's a big part of who I am. I truly have a passion for our planet and its health, and with my life I don't just want to reduce my own carbon footprint, I want to reduce the carbon footprint of our society.
