As a future freshman at Stevens Institute of Technology, my intended major is Chemical Engineering. This takes a lot of different skills in order to really dive into this challenging major. Throughout my school career, I have been told that I am extremely flexible. This makes collaboration seamless as I work with different people and teachers to improve my individual work as well as group work. Although my communication needs, admittedly, a lot of work, this flexibility allows me to focus on these skills as I have an easy time working with others with such a skill. Being flexible also allows me to learn best, as I am suggested to try new ideas. For example, in music different suggestions have me focus on different skills. When I am told to try different articulations, I often find a hole in my technique that I then work on due to this suggestion. Another example comes through my reflective project for the IB career path program, in which I wrote about the ethics of driverless cars becoming available to consumers. My teacher suggested a different focus of mine, which was missing from my paper. As it has a word count, I ended up having to cut out a large section and research an entirely different perspective. This really enlightened me further on the subject as I further explored how different nations approach this issue. It really added another dimension to engineering. I have always liked math, being one to approach things more logically. Science has also been something that interested me, telling me how the world works with small elements behind the scenes. Engineering has been something that has been super interesting to me, yet something that I have not been able to fully dive into. I only have what I can assume from teachers, from television, and from the major description. The ethical perspective really made this major far more important to me, as I can really see the impact from multiple perspectives. I have great indecisiveness, which can hurt me at times as I take a long to make decisions. Despite this, I feel my hesitancy will help me greatly in engineering, as it is a topic that is far more complex than just a combination of math and science. The time I take to choose a course of action will give me valuable time to use the skills I have learned to consider perspectives beyond what seemed to be directly related. At first glance, automatic cars reinvent transportation. They can reduce traffic and increase maneuverability for those who cannot drive, while also hurting people by reducing jobs. Farther than this, it has the ability to completely transform different industries, like hotels. One hotel in the US has aspirations to make a mobile hotel, and this becomes far more attainable with this new technology. The complexities make it hard to decide, yet also make engineering even more interesting to me. I want to make a good impact in the world, one that I can see a good chance to. This major would allow me to make something that can help people. Overall, I feel like the skills and experiences I have had will help me greatly to continue to learn about engineering and beyond, and truly make a positive mark on the world.
