Bio

Hello! I am Dylen, I graduated from high school with an Advanced Honors Diploma and I am attending Morehouse College as a Journalist Major. I have been looking forward to my future and the journeys it will offer me. I want to open doors that involve business, journalism, and any form of theatrical art. I also love exploring other academic interests that involve my hands such as woodworking. I have a very active lifestyle. I do rock climbing or go for a run when I can. I also do wrestling as my high school sport. Wrestling is one of my passions; ever since I started it I can not stop thinking about ways I can adapt and become a better person because of it. Then in NJROTC, I am a Cadet Petty Officer First Class. In NJROTC I am given ample time to be a part of activities that benefit the community as a whole. At Morehouse, I started AUC_Outdoors, a club dedicated to getting students outside. I also am an active member of my community with over 300 hours of community service. I find it fun and a nice way to give back as I get to meet new people every time I go out to help with an event. I try to help at any chance I get in any event I can. Helping others and being a friendly person is what gives me the motivation to keep going. I have a family that relies on me to help take care of my baby nephews and nieces. I want to continue my hobbies over into college and gain the education I need while doing so. With the help of scholarships, I can focus more on my passions and worry less.

Morehouse is a school known for its black excellence. It has helped produce some of America's and the world's most exemplary leaders. Martin Luther King Jr helped start the Southern Christian Leadership Conference which played a crucial in the Civil Rights Movement. Dr.King is the example of what Morehouse sets to create by educating and guiding the future generations of leaders. Having a leader in helping run a business is essential. He was able to guide and communicate his ideas with people and organize with them. Not having a need met sucks, it especially sucks when it is something as essential as not having the school supplies you need to work. This problem was calling for a solution that drove me to start my own business called AccelKids. My objective was to sell school supplies at a local swap meet and use the money to buy in bulk school supplies I could donate. I often went to open my business up after school, once there I would stand outside my booth and turn into a salesperson. In the end, I was able to gather up and donate to more than 400 students in low-income areas. I think going to an HBCU will provide a new experience that is somewhat like the one I described. Much of my success was based on the amount of work I put into it. I gave it what I could and it gave back to me what it could. I see myself owning a business and being an entrepreneur. Every day I hear of the environmental issues our world faces. I would like to be a part of the solution to that problem at hand and work with other people to maybe help to find it.
    Bold Best Skills Scholarship
My best skill is acting. I have been doing it for my whole life. Almsot, everyday I act as a different person and make sure to stay in character. Some of these days include characters like Bruce Wayne. To act like him I would do extive research on his character and read the stories he is involved in. I always try to aqure a deep understanding before I act. Then I go to working, writing out lines that they would say in certain situations and even preparing a costume myself. I do not really am to improve this skill it is something I do for fun, but I can say through doing my research and having fun while doing it I have made large advancements in the craft. I want to prosue a minor in theater while in college to continue developing my acting skills and in hopes of making it a career.

I want to be remembered by many people but most importantly by my family. The oldest name I know of who I am related to is my Great Granpa Rasberry, he was my mom's granddad. I had to find out his name by asking about him and my family's lineage. We also don't have any pictures of him the only true connection I have to him is the memories my grandmother shared of him. I want it to be different for my generation of the family. I want us to be more connected and intertwined because once we are gone and can't connect to future generations our memories will be there to keep us going in our place. I have used the technology of today to put my plans into action. Recording the stories my families tell of each other and taking pictures of all of us together. I want my legacy to be this, the person who helps keeps my family's memories of each other going.
    Bold Optimist Scholarship
Laughter is truly the best medicine. There has not been a moment when I could not use a joke to make life a little bit better. Even after going through suicidal thoughts and attempts during the quartine, I found myself laughing along with friends pulling me out of a slum. I have used this part of my life to stay optimistic; each time I am able to remember a laughable moment it gives me the urge to go out and make some more. The highlights of my week often involve making someone crack a smile or laugh hysterically. Take the time I did the dance move “the worm” in front of my friends. One of them could not understand how to execute it, so I got on the ground and did it as slowly as possible, then I sped up. Through this endeavour, I made memories that we all will never forget. Eventually, I learned that I need to laugh once in a while. Having comedic relief allows for my hardship to be taken easier. When I see other people laughing at a joke during hard times, or making light of it, it is always because it helps to make it bearable.

"I can't breathe!" It was the death of an already neutralized black man that acted as the catalyst for the BlackLivesMatter movement. During the height of a pandemic, a person dared to suffocate another human like the virus we all hid from. This event, just like the MeToo movement, asked our society to look at itself and asked "Where do you stand?" . The MeToo movement is dedicated to being the voice of sexual assault victims. This movement had society look at itself and repent for some of its wrongdoings. As a black man and a victim of sexual assault from my own family I now have a bigger voice that fits who I am. I can so this is due to the MeToo movement. I have always blocked out my own opinions on that part in my life because it was something I thought I didn't need an opinion on. They did what they did, but they were family, so I had no right to be upset. That was my point of view. If I was to press charges I would be forcing the family apart. My mom against her sister, my sister against my cousins, and so on. I was afraid to open up about my experience and retaliate. Later on, when I did try to talk about the incident shame washed over me. The "guys" around me didn't have stories like mine to tell but they would always remind me that they were the ones getting "laid". It was the action people took to prevent future antics that killed Gorge Floyd and the amplified voices of the MeToo movement that began to form around me. Shame no longer resides within me. I can talk openly about my experience and not shut myself down. From the MeToo movement, I was able to develop a stronger mentality. I felt that I was a part of a group that understood my loss of face but we were able to gain it back. I was able to receive my dignity back by finally talking about my experience. The first time I was able to open up was to a group of friends of mine at a get-together. We were just discussing Harvey Weinstein and then our own experience. All of us were there lending an ear, we unknowingly formed a little group therapy session that day where we also offered each other advice on how to handle our emotions. Forgive, but do not forget. I had already forgiven my family, but they were a part of me and I was not willing to get rid of them. The MeToo movement gave me a community that could understand my pain. And my courage was gained through the BlackLive Moment. My community has come together and formed a tighter bond from the discussion the movements have started.

    Bold Future of Education Scholarship
Quit using education as a punishment; learning should be fun. Many teachers like to use essays and homework as a threat when their students do not act to their benefit. This can often lead to resentment toward something that can be fun and more relaxing than they could ever imagine. Education is often used by people to learn and develop themselves and educators are the ones that guide them. They help give them a glips into what is possible. If all they are shown is the monotone side of a scholar why would anyone want to become one? From personal experience, I have seen people drop out because they believed life outside of school had a lot more going on for them, and in some cases that is true, but for the most part, they wounded up not working or working at a place they rather not be to support themselves. They were too cool for school and thought they did not need it. People, children, and anyone can be creative and should be allowed the chance to show it off. All the rules in academic writing can often put a limit on their creativity and even make it harder for them to communicate their ideas. And people who are not as adjusted to English academic writing can be the one who is punished the most for this. Rules act as some sort of cage that people are required to stay in, stopping their development. Education is important for the future; it is what all generations base their strive for a better future from. Using education as a punishment can halt or lower a student's motivation to continue. Learning and developing one's skills is something not everyone has the privilege to do. We should encourage the people who can do so by showing them that education can be more than just monotone academic writing. It is their future and they can decide how to use it.
    Bold Joy Scholarship
I joined NJROTC to gain some sort of structure in High School but I found a lot more. I found friends that make me laugh the loudest, I found a sense of being, and most importantly I have found joy. Joy to me is when I don't notice the time passing by as I can interact with people. I have been able to pursue this form of joy through volunteering in my community. “Good morning Cadets.” Was the first thing I said to a group of NJRTOC Cadets who were waiting for the event to start. We were helping the Internation Church of Las Vegas run their Veterans tribute. They were giving away over a million dollars worth of furniture and more. There was plenty of work that needed to be done so we got right to it. Throughout the day a sea of people flooded the Church. I was able to learn about some of their individual experiences in life. One veteran was in a rock ‘n roll band before he was sent off to fight in the Vietnam war and the other veteran served as a combat nurse. They were both just happy to be there. Interacting with them showed me that joy is also what we make it. The veteran that was sent off to fight was shot through his stomach but he told me he did not mind, he had a great story to tell to anyone willing to listen.

"Racist Robot?" Was a headline for a news report on the dangers of artificial intelligence becoming racist from taught events. People on Twitter would flood the AI with racist remarks changing the speaking pattern of the machine. The constant exposure to the same views is what leads the AI down the road of conflict. If it was given more than just the antisemitic, anti-black viewpoints, this news report would not exist. There is more to the internet than just racism. There are whole communities online dedicated to helping one another with sewing, gardening, and even tutoring. But the AI never knew about the variety out there, so it never had the chance to use it. The backbone of STEM is knowledge. With diversity comes this knowledge. As our world becomes more technologically advanced, the people who do not participate in it will be left behind. Everyone must have the same opportunities in STEM for the benefit of society; regardless of a person's background, race, sex, age, religion, and socio-economic status. Having everyone included helps increase the available talent. There are a lot of bright minds in communities that do not have access to STEM education which leads to a loss of talent. The talent and knowledge gained from inclusion can advance society. It has been shown that people work better in diverse groups. They approach problems from a more holistic view as opposed to the narrower perspective seen in like-minded groups. STEM is all about problem-solving; in any case, where problem-solving can be made easier it should be taken. Diverse perspectives present diverse options to problem solve. Having diverse minds allows for many options to be considered. Having different ways of solving a problem allows for options that can be better suited for certain situations. A flourishing diverse community in STEM is a morally correct objective. Having people of all backgrounds working in labs that will solve cancer or in major social media companies helps level the playing field for minorities. Big companies like Google do self-evaluations and look at their wage discrimination between sex and race. From this self-evaluation, they were able to help close their wage gaps. Diversity in STEM gives voices to the underrepresented communities. Learning from the example of Racist AI, we can avoid the disadvantage of a homogenous point of view by promoting diversity. STEM becomes a more knowledgeable and experienced field when different perspectives are included.

Wrestling motivates me on a daily basis. It is a sport that is much like life itself. You get out of it what you put into it. The best of the best in the sport all have been participating since they were children, dedicating countless hours and endless amounts of blood, sweat, and tears to it. They do not simply just do this during the wrestling season but also outside of wrestling season they are still hitting the mats all year round. They develop mental toughness that keeps them going and striving. As a person who deals with anxiety and self-doubt wrestling has taught me that all I need to do is keep going. If I stop then I won't know what would happen if I did give it my all. I have seen people in the sport beat someone that they were not meant to beat because they were the new kid, but they did because they put in the work and they were willing to give everything they had to achieve their goals. Everyone watched the finals for our state wrestling tournament but they did not watch any of the finalists come in to practice after a stressful testing week and put in the effort that was needed to defeat someone that was just as skilled as them. It is the things that a person does while no one is watching that count the most I have learned that make a person successful. Wrestling motivates me daily because it is more than a sport but a lifestyle.

Hello, I am Dylen. I have been planning to go to college ever since I was in elementary school. It was not an option I knew I had to go because of what I will learn and the people I will meet. I have decided to major in business and try for a minor in theater. The reason why I choose this was that I have started my own business before called Acelkids. At Acelkids I ran my own booth in a swapmeet, on the weekends I would go and become a salesman, marketing my product to passer Byers. In my product were two pencils, some highlighters, an eraser, and a notebook. Selling my product was a goal of mine but the main focus was the donations I was able to make from it. You see each time someone bought a Power Pack, as I named them, we donated one to a local school in Las Vegas. During my time running Acelkids, I got to meet new people every time I worked. I know I was not supposed to talk to strangers but this time I was allowed to. My mom helped me run the business she put the booth at the swapmeet in her name and she helped handle the money. We together raised over six hundred dollars worth of school supplies. We put an event together last the school where Santa Claus was to give away the donated school supplies to the children at the school. From this experience, I learned that business can benefit a lot of people if done correctly. I was able to be a part of the local economy. I was able to contribute to the swapmeet by paying my weekly rent which in return gave me the motivation to sell the Power Packs even more. During college, I plan on taking what I learned and know and starting another business. I want this business this time to have a global impact instead of a local one. I do not know exactly what it will be but it will probably involve food and or agriculture. I have researched the effect of climate change on agriculture and I would like to do something about it but first I need to continue my research and learn as much as possible. With that being said I hope that I win this scholarship so I can pay for my college expenses.

"Don't put all your eggs in one basket." As simple as the advice maybe it is the best advice I have received about investing. Diversifying my stock,m portfolio has helped me avoid losing all of my money and gaining a couple of dollars in return. I have also applied this to life situations. I like to learn as much as I can about the world now as I do not know what information will and will not be useful to me. When talking about stocks it has made life better because I can talk about an array of businesses that I have done research on. I started out buying stocks when wallstreetbets and Robinhood were becoming a place for new people to join in on stocks and make a lot of money. But I started just at the end of the craze so as I bought in on the highs I ended selling on the lows. Buying Blackstone stock along with Disney is what saved me the most money as stocks like Gamestop and Blackberry were going up and down Disney and Blackstone stade consent for the most part. Diversifying my stocks is what helped me keep going in investing.

Finally, the day has come. I was prepared for the first match of the season the only problem was I was wrestling up a weight class. "None of that matters. None of that matters. Do what you know and go with the flow." That is what I told myself. We stood face to face and as soon as the referee blew the whistle I made sure I was the first to strike. I clubbed his neck with all the force I had brought him down to his knees. He got back up and we both met at the center of the circle again, as soon as he took his next step I clubbed him again but I gave him time to react and lift up his head leaving himself open to my next attack. I ended the match with a pin for my team. "None of that matters. You know what to do. Do what you know and go with the flow." This is what I usually tell myself before going out to wrestle but this was the last match of my high school career. I felt my heart begin to hurt. I just gave up three years of my life to this sport just for it to come to an end at the blow of a whistle. I was doing all of this for nothing. I was losing matches, one after another while everyone else on the team was going to state. I was not made for this sport. I did not have the mentality I needed to keep going, to make weight, to stare someone in the face and tell them I was going to beat them. Every time I failed I became a liar and everyone knew it. I said I was going to go out there and get the pin for the team but I didn't. I told them I was going to give it my all and that that was enough to get the job done but it was not. I want to continue wrestling in college as I gain my bachelor's in business. As I pursue the sport it will be the time I work on my anxiety and mental headspace as an athlete and as a person. I do not want to start doubting myself every time I face an unknown outcome. Freezing up and being able to act at the moment is a goal that I have set for myself in any circumstance. Going to college will be the place where I can get over my anxiety as I have the chance to meet new people and explore.

The realization of death. Death is the last period in our book. After it there seems to be nothing else for you here; but maybe a funeral where a short description of who you are is announced to anyone who can listen. A person I barely knew sadly passed. The thought of his life going with him puts me in a weird place. Knowing he was a person with dreams and hopes. He was a person that was an active part of my community. He was a person that was going to go home and have school a day later. I did not get the chance to know him on a personal level, yet I sit here and think about these things. Things that we as people can take for granted. All of it can be taken away from us. With the realization of death I want to cherish these ideas and things and build upon them with every chance I am given. I have experienced an emotion I am not yet able to describe but I know I have experienced something that makes me want to hold on to what I have and build from it.
