Choosing nursing as a career was a deeply personal decision for me, one that stemmed from a blend of compassion, curiosity, and a desire to make a tangible difference in people's lives during their most vulnerable moments. However, it was a pivotal experience with a cancer diagnosis that solidified my commitment to this profession. I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colorectal in 2021, and at the time I thought my life was over. Cancer to me was a death sentence and I couldn’t understand how or why this was happening to me. I had just turned 30 years old and was planning my only son's 4th birthday party.
The diagnosis destroyed me and unconceivable but while in recovery my OR nurse grabbed my hand and prayed for me, comforting me while alone thinking my life was over. I will never forget that act of kindness in my time of need. Nursing, to me, is more than just a job; it's a calling, a noble pursuit of alleviating suffering and promoting healing. My journey into nursing began with a fascination for the human body and a profound empathy for those facing illness or injury. What solidified that was battling cancer myself with the help of a healthcare team. I want to be the person who could offer comfort, support, and expert care to individuals and families navigating the complexities of healthcare. The type of care that was provided to me.
When battling depression and the quality of life was something I didn't think was worth living. My hospital social worker provided services to maintain my mental health and the will to fight through treatment, radiation, and surgeries. Discovering my passion for nursing was like finding a missing puzzle piece in my life. It resonated with my values of empathy, integrity, and service to others. Nursing allows me to merge scientific knowledge with human connections, empowering me to provide holistic care that addresses not only the physical but also the emotional and spiritual needs of patients. However, it was a life-altering encounter at a hospital that cemented my commitment to nursing. As a nurse, I would embody these same values of compassion and excellence. I would strive to emulate the dedication and professionalism of the nurses who cared for me.
Being a nurse means more than just administering medication or performing procedures; it means being a source of strength and hope for patients and their loved ones. In conclusion, choosing nursing as a career was a deeply personal and purposeful decision for me. It's a profession that aligns with my values, passions, and desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. My experience at a hospital reaffirmed my commitment to nursing and inspired me to strive for excellence as a nurse, providing compassionate care and unwavering support to patients and their families during their most challenging moments.
