For me, education has always been important education because it is the key that could open the door to getting my family out of poverty. Being an FGLI student of immigrant parents from Oaxaca, Mexico, I feel that it is my responsibility to achieve a career connected to what I like since it is something my mom has fought for to achieve my dreams and live happily. But now, my goal is for my mother to enjoy her life just as she does.
I'm inclined to pursue a computer science major. Working with software has been my dream because of the possible functions I could contribute in creating it to assist or make our lives easier. But my father saw that work as not faithful to what a Mexican should pursue. My father denied me from attending or participating in technology-related opportunities. However, I learned the basics of computer programming in secret. Until my father abandoned us without warning after losing hope in the American dream. I didn't let that get me down. Instead, I co-founded a programming club for classmates who felt limited by our school's lack of technological classes. My goal is to make programming more accessible since I believe no one should be limited in pursuing their dream/learning due to external factors not in their control.
My life experiences have taught me to overcome obstacles since I believe that challenges will inevitably arise in life, but we are the ones who set the limitations since there is always an alternative to our problems, even in the darkest scenarios. A philosophy that I always try to personify and transmit to others.
