Bio

Hi My name is Detricke, I am currently a nursing student. My goals are to finish my degree and also start my own research company. I would love to study and research into oncology, and also diabetes. I'm very passionate about helping others and making a change in the world. I believe what makes me a great candidate is my experience in life. I am not your typical college student, my age, experience, and excelling in the most difficult times is what makes me stand out. I am pursing my goals at a late age but that doesn't stop me from studying and completing my goals.

My goals and ambitions were to help people from a very young age, but life threw me a few curve balls, but I was determined not to strike out. For instance, going back to school at 30 years of age is not easy. I am not the not the traditional student, hard work and dedication is what motivated me to be where I am today; a college student. I believe the greatest test someone can have is when they lose something or someone, and still have the courage to press forward. My story starts when I was a child and had a dream of becoming a world-renowned physician, with a cushy lifestyle with a wife and children. However, the reality for me is I did get married and then my life became uprooted by a divorce. This took a toll on me and affected my grades tremendously. Nonetheless, I stop feeling ashamed and disappointed in myself, I stood up and started to pick up the pieces. Primarily by starting anew, finding new goals to achieve such as becoming a nurse, and new support system who stand by my side in all that I do. With that being said one of my most precious moments was being a youth leader. I was a youth leader at my previous church that I attended, which helped me develop the leadership skills needed and helped me to learn to care for others. Being a youth leader helped me to stay focused on what I wanted to do with my career. I planned an event for the children which was a youth weekend. Friday was a round table talk with leaders within the community (police chief, Firefighter, ect). This included myself, we discussed the issues that comes along with being a young adult and how to make the right decisions. This was followed by Saturday giving over 2,000 book-bags to students and free haircuts for back to school. I consider this achievement being one of my greatest because it gave me an opportunity to not only help others but to be able to showcase my talents as a leader. I believe being a nurse is not only just helping others (mind, body, and spirit) but also being an advocate for the patients when it comes to care. Having these skills are essential for nursing. Being an advocate for the patient when they need it the most. One of my goals when it comes to nursing is having a research company where I and others can study oncology, and diabetes the root cause and how to prevent or treat patients who have it. One of the things I want to leave in my legacy is my passion for helping people and the opportunities I gave others when they needed it. I believe one of the greatest challenge we face in healthcare is cancer and diabetes. Along with others like heart disease. More research is needed in these fields in order to help others not only in this country but around the world to fight these diseases.
