The tapestry of my life is intricately woven with threads of resilience, determination, and gratitude, each dyed in the hues of my parent’s sacrifices. Their unwavering commitment to my education has been the cornerstone of my aspiration, propelling me forward with a steadfast purpose.
My parents, immigrants who arrived in this country with little more than hope and ambition, have exemplified the power of perseverance. Their journey, a testament to the American Dream, has been marked by challenges that would have deterred many.
My father, a skilled engineer in Nigeria, worked long, arduous hours as a contract laborer, often leaving before dawn to secure a meager wage. My mother, a banker back home, traded her calculating skills for the demanding shifts of a factory worker, sacrificing her health and well-being to provide for our family. Their sacrifices were not made out of obligation but from an unwavering love and belief in the potential of their children.
Their selfless dedication to our education has been the cornerstone of my aspirations. Witnessing their struggles firsthand ignited in me a fierce determination to succeed. I aspire to become a cardiothoracic surgeon, a profession that embodies the convergence of intellect, compassion, and technical skill.
The road to becoming a surgeon is long and arduous, demanding resilience, dedication, and hard work. By choosing this path, I hope to not only honor my parents' sacrifices but also to make a tangible difference in the lives of others.
Ultimately, my parents’ sacrifices have shaped me into a compassionate, driven, and responsible individual. Their unwavering support has instilled in me a deep sense of gratitude and a profound obligation to give back. Through my academic pursuits and future endeavors, I am determined to honor their legacy by becoming a skilled surgeon and creating a positive impact on the world around me.
Their story has not only defined my career aspiration but has also influenced my worldview. Growing up, I learned that success is not merely a personal achievement but a responsibility to uplift others. My parent’s resilience has taught me the value of empathy, the importance of hard work, and the necessity of perseverance in the face of adversity.
In the field of cardiothoracic surgery, I aim to embody these principles daily, in my relationships and practice. The intricate nature of this profession demands precision, but it also requires a deep understanding of patients’ experiences and emotions. By combining my technical skills with compassion, I hope to offer not just medical care but also comfort and hope to those in need.
As I advance in my career, I will strive to be a role model for others, particularly those who face obstacles similar to those my family encountered. My goal is to inspire others to pursue their dreams with the same determination and resilience that my parents showed. In doing so, I hope to perpetuate a cycle of hope and achievement that honors their sacrifices and extends their impact beyond our immediate family.
The tapestry of my life, woven with threads of my parent’s sacrifices, has forged a path of dedication and purpose. Their story is not just a part of my past but also a guiding force in my future, shaping my career aspirations and reinforcing my commitment to make a difference in the world. As I embark on this journey, I carry with me their legacy, a constant reminder of the strength and love that has brought me to this point and will continue to inspire my efforts in the years to come.

The human heart, a remarkable organ that tirelessly pumps life through our bodies, has always captivated my imagination. Its intricate mechanics and vital role in sustaining life are a source of endless fascination. I've spent countless hours exploring the complexities of the cardiovascular system, driven by a desire to understand how this incredible organ works. Beyond mere curiosity, I'm compelled to help those facing heart-related challenges. Becoming a cardiac surgeon is my calling, a chance to combine my passion for science with the profound satisfaction of healing others.
As a first-generation college student, navigating the complexities of higher education can be overwhelming. While incredibly supportive, my parents lack firsthand experience with the American college system. The financial burden of both undergraduate and medical school is a significant challenge. I'm determined to overcome these obstacles and pursue my dream of becoming a cardiac surgeon.
Volunteering at the local hospital provided me with a firsthand look at the challenges faced by patients with heart conditions. This experience solidified my determination to make a difference in their lives. I remember one patient in particular, an elderly woman named Mrs. Johnson, who suffered a heart attack. Her determination to recover inspired me deeply. As I observed the cardiac team's expertise and compassion, I realized that I wanted to be part of a team that could make such a profound difference in people's lives. Additionally, participating in HOSA competition, where I earned third place internationally, not only enhanced my scientific knowledge but also instilled in me the importance of teamwork, critical thinking, and perseverance. While a virtual shadowing experience with a pulmonologist offered insights into the medical field, it also reinforced my aspiration to specialize in cardiac surgery.
This scholarship would be a game-changer. By providing financial assistance, it would allow me to focus on my studies without the constant worry of mounting debt. These funds would be crucial in covering tuition, textbooks, and essential fees, enabling me to excel academically. I would also be able to afford other essentials for college such as the dorm supplies. With a stronger financial foundation, I can pursue research opportunities, participate in medical internships, and gain valuable clinical experience, all of which are essential for medical school admissions. I would also have money saved up for medical school tuition
I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to apply for this scholarship. It represents a significant step towards achieving my dream of becoming a cardiac surgeon. Thank you for considering my application.

Everyone yearns for the American Dream, including my family. We immigrated from Nigeria to the United States in 2019 seeking a brighter future filled with more opportunities. This transition was undeniably challenging, marked by numerous adjustments and obstacles. I took on new responsibilities while navigating a foreign culture and educational system.
My parents' unwavering work ethic and sacrifices have profoundly influenced my life. Their dedication to providing for our family, despite facing long hours and low wages, instilled in me the values of hard work, resilience, and gratitude. Their support and encouragement have been instrumental in shaping my character and aspirations.
As the eldest child, I've become a cornerstone of our family. Caring for my younger siblings while my parents worked demanded responsibility, patience, and time management skills. I’ve learned to balance academic pursuits with familial obligations, fostering a strong sense of empathy and leadership. My siblings are my closest confidants, and I cherish our bond.
Adapting to the American educational system was a formidable challenge. The transition from British to American English initially hindered my communication and academic performance. However, I overcame these obstacles through perseverance and a willingness to seek help. Joining clubs and extracurricular activities helped me build confidence and connect with my peers. “CONGRATULATIONS ADERINOLA ADEGOKE FROM NEW JERSEY!!!”
Some days, I still hear the announcement followed by the resounding cheers of my classmates and friends from the audience (they were quite embarrassing, honestly). Reaching the international stage of HOSA ILC 2023 was a turning point in my high school experience. After two years of falling short at regional competitions, I finally reached the international stage. This journey taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, self-belief, and the importance of support.
The journey to internationals wasn’t easy. Balancing demanding academic schedules with HOSA competitions has proven difficult in the past. Balancing AP, honors, and dual enrollment classes was demanding. During my junior year, in particular, the coursework seemed to multiply. To make matters worse, personal challenges affected my academic performance. However, I used the winter break to rest and refocus. My determination increased - I prayed for a sign at regionals, and achieving second place became that sign. It motivated me to raise my grades to A’s while preparing for states.
Winning first palace at states qualified me for internationals in Texas and rekindled my confidence in myself. I studied intensely for two months, juggling AP exams, final exams, and the competition itself. The hard work paid off, for the most part, acing my exams with grades that exceeded my expectations. The day for the trip to Texas finally came as the exams concluded. This was my first time traveling alone, and the competition was fierce. I started feeling unsure about myself as I engaged in conversation and pin trading with my possible competitors. They appeared so confident in themselves and that gave me the opinion that I wasn’t quite ready. Self-doubt crept in, but I refused to give up. With the support of my parents (including a crucial pre-competition call), I achieved an incredible honor - this place in HOSA ILC for Medical Law and Ethics. The moment I stood on the podium receiving my medal, with the lights and camera directed at me during that special moment (despite the tears), was a powerful validation of my hard work.
This experience taught me several important things. First, I learned that setbacks are inevitable. My initial struggles during my junior year helped me realize the importance of resilience. My mental strain stemmed from wanting to validate my family’s move for my brothers and me. This taught me that striving for perfection is unrealistic. Second, I discovered the power of self-belief. Doubting myself almost derailed my progress at international. But by pushing through those doubts, I achieved what I set out to do. Finally, the competition emphasized the value of teamwork. While the competition itself was individual, the support from my family and friends was instrumental in my success. More importantly, the competition wasn’t just about the medal; it was about proving to myself that I was capable. I am not a failure, and I can continue to grow.
Looking ahead, I plan to carry these lessons into college. I’ll actively collaborate with classmates and colleagues, knowing that teamwork enhances achievement. Moreover, the strong time management skills I developed through studying for all the exams will prove very valuable throughout my college experience I also hope to inspire others who may face similar challenges. My story is a testament to the power of perseverance and self-belief and I want to share that message with others. I hope to inspire others to overcome self-doubt and chase their dreams with unwavering determination by participating in my youth support groups and through public speaking opportunities.

The rhythmic snip of the suture on practice skin fills me with anticipation – a sound I imagine replicating with confidence someday. My fascination lies in cardiology, fueled by excelling in anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology. My academic goal is to obtain a Doctor of Medicine degree, ultimately becoming a compassionate cardiologist and pediatric cardiac surgeon.
While many children might find hospitals intimidating, I’ve always felt a strange sense of comfort in them. I find a sense of excitement whenever I come for a medical checkup. The efficient bustle of the medical environment adds to the anticipation I feel during checkups. Perhaps it was due to the dedication of my pediatrician, Dr. Smith, who always greeted me with a warm smile, a calming presence, and an interesting sense of humor (perhaps the source of my own!). Witnessing her compassion firsthand sparked a desire within me to create a similar safe space for other patients, especially those like me who might feel anxious and scared in a medical setting.
This passion for medicine deepened during my high school years. An inspiring anatomy teacher, three live cardiac-related surgeries, and a healthy dose of medical K-dramas fueled my curiosity about the human body. In particular, the heart’s intricate yet powerful structure resonated with me. I saw it as a tireless conduction, orchestrating a symphony of life through each contraction and relaxation and its valves and chambers. The procedures to repair a faltering heart mirrored my determination to overcome challenges. Cardiology, to me, became more than just a medical specialty; it became a story of resilience, reflecting the enduring rhythm of the human spirit.
My dream of becoming a doctor, specifically a pediatric cardiologist, requires dedication and overcoming financial hurdles. As an international student living in the U.S., the full cost of tuition presents a significant challenge. There is always a lack of scholarship opportunities due to my citizenship status which led to financial aid options. Receiving this scholarship would be a tremendous honor, alleviating some of that pressure and allowing me to fully dedicate myself to my studies. This is because the award would help cover essential expenses like textbooks, meal plans, and a portion of my tuition, allowing me to focus on my academic journey.
My fascination with cardiology, ignited by a childhood experience and fueled by academic curiosity, has shaped my goal of becoming a pediatric cardiologist, using my knowledge to heal and inspire others. This scholarship would be a vital note in the symphony of support needed to achieve this dream. It would be a powerful validation of my goals and a catalyst for my future success. I am confident that with your support, I can contribute meaningfully to the field of pediatric cardiology, hoping to enrich the lives and hearts of those around me.

While social justice issues encompass a wide range of concerns, from economic inequality to environmental protection, I'm particularly troubled by the disparity in healthcare access and representation for BIPOC communities. Statistics show a significant lack of Black physicians and a lower rate of BIPOC individuals receiving mental health services compared to the general population. This lack of access and representation in the healthcare field can have serious consequences for the health of these communities.
During my early years in Nigeria, the only physicians I had ever encountered were black. Later on, after moving the the U.S. I wasn’t always surrounded by people who looked like me in healthcare professions. I became less willing to go to the doctor and often chose to hide away any discomfort I had just to avoid going to the pediatrician. All of this changed when we switched to Dr. Smith’s pediatric clinic. There I encountered Nurse Ann and Dr. Williams, the only Black healthcare professionals at the clinic. Their presence changed my opinion about going to the doctor’s.
Nurse Ann had a way of making even getting shots feel like a positive experience. She’d share stories about some scenarios she had seen before. She’d also share stories about her journey to becoming a nurse, which inspired me. Dr. Williams, on the other hand, was the first Black doctor I ever met since I moved. He was kind and patient, answering all my curious questions about the human body and questions about what might have caused my headache. Seeing them in their white coats was more than just seeing a doctor; it was a beacon of hope and possibility. It showed me that despite the statistics and disparities, there was a place for people who looked like me in the world of medicine.
This personal experience is why I’m so passionate about pursuing a career in medicine and addressing healthcare disparities. I am determined to increase the number of Black doctors and ensure that every child can see themselves reflected in their doctors and nurses. A more diverse medical workforce can foster better cultural understanding and communication, leading to improved patient outcomes.
There are already inspiring initiatives tackling these issues. The Hood Medicine Initiative, for example, used innovative methods to bridge the gap by educating BIPOC communities about healthcare through media and technology. The BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Awareness Month initiative also raises awareness about the unique mental health struggles that underrepresented groups face.
Looking ahead, I plan to actively engage in addressing these disparities. First, as a student on the premed track, I will continue to educate myself about the challenges faced by BIPOC communities. Second, I intend to participate in research that sheds light on the root causes of these disparities. Finally, as a medical professional, I will advocate for the policies that promote a more equitable healthcare system.
Getting involved in this issue is not just about fairness; it’s about ensuring everyone has the opportunity to live a healthy life. By working together, we can create a healthcare system that is more just and accessible for all.

Those were the kind of words I always heard from my parents and teachers when I was little. I wasn’t always the outgoing person I am today. Public speaking used to terrify me (it still does at times), and new situations left me clinging to the familiar. But somewhere between countless group chat jokes and memes (sometimes landing a little flat, I admit) and determined practices pushing myself out of my comfort zone, I discovered a new side of myself: brave, adaptable, and open-minded. These qualities, along with my strong resilience, are the foundation on which I’m building as a pediatric cardiologist.
My fascination with medicine began with a simple doctor’s visit. My pediatrician, with her warm smile and calming presence, made a world of difference for a shy kid like me. I was always fascinated by every bit of her actions even her interesting humor. Witnessing her compassion firsthand sparked a desire to create that same safe space for other kids, especially those like me who might feel anxious and scared in a medical setting.
This passion took a more specific turn thanks to an inspiring anatomy teacher and a healthy dose of medical K-dramas. I recall one lecture vividly, where the revelation of the heart’s delicate yet robust structure struck me as profoundly as the climax of a well-scripted drama. The intricate workings of the heart captivated me, not just for its biological marvel but also for the profound impact it has on a person's life.
As a future pediatric cardiologist, I see an opportunity to use my passion for medicine to make a positive impact on children’s lives in a few key ways. Imagine a child facing a cardiac issue. They, and their families, are likely feeling scared and overwhelmed. I want to be a doctor who not only understands the complexities of the heart but also creates a welcoming environment. While volunteering at a hospital, I saw how important communication can be. One time, a young patient seemed nervous before a procedure. A healthcare professional explained things patiently, using age-appropriate words, and the child calmed down a lot. This experience showed me the power of clear language and empathy, which are key when working with patients and their families.
My impact won’t be limited to the exam room. I’m interested in staying up-to-date on the latest research and advancements in pediatric cardiology. I want to be a strong advocate for children’s well-being, ensuring they receive the best possible treatment and support. Perhaps one day, I too can contribute to research that improves treatments or even leads to breakthroughs. By sharing my passion for cardiology, I hope to inspire young people to explore careers in science and medicine.
The road ahead may be long, but that doesn’t deter me. I may not be fearless of heights, but I’m fearless in my pursuits of making a positive impact on the world. With every beat of my determined heart, I carry with me the lessons of my past, ready to infuse my practice with the same compassion that once made a timid child feel brave. In this intersection of personal growth and professional aspiration, I find my purpose, and it is here that I will leave my mark, one heartbeat at a time.

Cardiology, to me, is more than a medical specialty—it’s a narrative of life, a testament to the human spirit’s enduring rhythm.
My journey hasn’t been without its challenges. Facing financial hurdles and navigating a new system in a different country (and the switch from British English to American English!) demanded a whole new level of adaptability. But these obstacles only strengthened my resolve. They taught me the power of resilience, the importance of embracing new perspectives, and the unwavering belief in myself and my goals.
As a future pediatric cardiologist, I see an opportunity to combine my passion for medicine with the empathy and approachability I’ve cultivated. I want to be a doctor who not only understands the complexities of the heart but also creates a welcoming environment where patients feel safe, heard, and understood. A patient facing a cardiac issue needs not just a skilled doctor, but also someone who can ease their anxiety and offer a moment of hope. Being the funniest person in the group chat is no small feat, especially when the underlying goal is to uplift and assist. It’s a skill I plan to carry with me into my future career.
The road ahead may be long, but that doesn’t deter me. I may not be fearless of heights, but I’m fearless in my pursuits of making a positive impact on the world. Food waste is a global dilemma. While millions face hunger, a significant portion of food produced - estimated to be one-third - never reaches consumers. Perishable food like fruits and vegetables are particularly vulnerable during transport, and storage and can spoil even at home. This not only affects food security but also contributes to the emission of greenhouse gases. Here, a marriage of science and creative thinking offers a glimmer of hope with a revolutionary solution - edible coatings.
Edible coatings are thin layers derived from natural materials like waxes, proteins, and polysaccharides found in fruits, vegetables, and even seaweed. These thin layers can be applied directly to fruits and vegetables to create a protective barrier. The science behind this is fascinating: the barrier reduces moisture loss, oxidation, and microbial growth, all of which contribute to food spoilage. The result? A significant extension of shelf life that allows foods to remain fresh for longer periods.
The benefits of the “second skin” are far-reaching. Imagine a scenario where grocery stores can stock fresher produce for a longer period, leading to increased profitability, reduced transportation costs, and the associated environmental impact. For consumers, it can mean lower grocery bills due to fewer shopping trips and less food waste at home. On a global scale, edible coating can provide a huge dent in the food waste problem and create a more sustainable food system.
The beauty of edible coating lies in its simplicity and eco-friendly nature. It utilizes natural materials, many of which are byproducts from other food production systems. This reduces reliance on synthetic materials and minimizes the environmental impact of packaging. Furthermore, since the “packaging” is built-in, edible coatings eliminate the need for additional plastic packaging, a major contributor to plastic pollution. This accessibility broadens the potential impact of edible coatings making it an effective solution in both developed and developing countries.
However, the journey of this innovative solution is not without its challenges. Different fruits, vegetables, and other food products have unique characteristics, requiring ongoing research to optimize these coatings for various food types. Additionally, ensuring the affordability and widespread adoption of this technology requires collaboration among scientists, food producers, and regulatory bodies. As edible coatings are still a relatively new technology, another potential challenge is consumer acceptance. Finally, the ideal coating should also not alter the taste, texture, or mouthfeel of the food. Achieving this balance can be challenging.
Despite these challenges, edible coating holds immense promise. It represents a groundbreaking solution with the potential to transform the food industry. The potential of edible coatings is still being explored. Scientists are constantly researching new materials, improving application methods, and exploring additional functionalities. For example, coatings with antimicrobial properties could further enhance food safety. Research into incorporating essential nutrients or even flavorings is another exciting avenue. By harnessing the power of science and creative thinking, edible coatings bring a promise of a future where food stays fresher for longer, reaching more plates and reducing our environmental footprint, one delicious bite at a time.

Volunteering has been a transformative experience for me. It has taught me valuable skills, enriched my perspective, and inspired me to pursue my goals. Volunteering taught me how to be more compassionate, resilient, and empathetic. I have also gained a deeper understanding of different communities' challenges and opportunities, such as language barriers, lack of food, healthcare, and social support.
One of my most memorable volunteering experiences was working with a local clinic that provides pain management and mental health for adults from low-income families. I helped with administrative tasks, such as scheduling appointments, filing records, confirming insurance status, and answering phone calls. I enjoyed listening to their stories. I also assisted the staff with basic clinical procedures, such as taking vital signs. I enjoyed interacting with the patients, listening to their different stories, and seeing their progression as time went on. I also witnessed the hardships and barriers they faced and had to overcome, such as access to insurance and quality care.
This experience made me realize how privileged I am to have access to quality health care, insurance, and social support in any form. It also motivated me to use my privilege to help others who are less fortunate. The experience provided me with a first-hand experience in a medical facility, which further increased my interest in pursuing a career in the medical field. I now learned some of the challenges and barriers; in addition, I can apply my skills and knowledge to make a positive difference in the quality of care for patients. My goal is to provide adequate and compassionate care to the diverse marginalized and underserved groups such as immigrants and minorities.
While volunteering has been a life-changing experience, as a low-income, newly-arrived immigrant, affording higher education is challenging for me and my family. I have to work hard to support myself and my family in the future. My parents work hard but face many barriers to finding stable and well-paying jobs due to their immigration status. While they have to worry about paying bills and taking care of me and my siblings, they also have the burden of immigration fees. The Lauren Czebatul Scholarship program can help my family and me tremendously by allowing me access to higher education.
This scholarship would help me cover the costs of tuition, books, and transportation. It would also reduce the burden on my parents for my studies. With the scholarship, I could pursue my passion for medicine without worrying about the financial burden on myself and my family. I would be able to major in Biochemistry and make my parents proud.
In conclusion, volunteering has changed my mindset in many ways. It has shown me the importance of giving back to the community, the value of diversity and inclusion, and the potential of human kindness. It has also inspired me to follow my dreams and overcome any obstacles that come my way. I am grateful for the opportunity to apply for this scholarship, and I hope that you will consider my application.

What do eggs and babies have in common? They share a life-saving device: the incubator. Creative thinking is the ability to generate new and original ideas that can solve problems and improve situations. In this essay, I will discuss how creative thinking combined with science has led to an innovative solution to an everyday societal challenge: the high mortality rate of premature infants.
Every year, about 15 million babies are born prematurely, and more than one million of them die. However, thanks to a simple device that mimics a bird’s nest, many of these babies can survive and thrive. This device was inspired by an incubator used for hatching eggs that a French physician, Stéphane Tarnier, saw at a zoo in Paris in the 19th century. He asked the zookeeper to make him a wooden box with a glass lid and compartments that contained warm water. The spaces between the walls of the compartment were filled with sawdust for insulation. The box, couveuse, could hold up to four infants at once and provide them with a warm and humid environment. Although his idea was not entirely new, he treated premature babies as an entity distinct from full-term infants. Initially, there were many questions raised about the incubator: was the incubator intended to enhance the connection between the premature infant and its carers – to act as a bridge to the mother? Or was it intended to replace her? But despite this many doctors and scientists perceive the early incubator as being a safer place than the uterus.
The invention of the incubator was a breakthrough for the care of premature infants but it also brought about some benefits and challenges. One of the main benefits was that it reduced the mortality rate of premature infants by preventing hypothermia and infection. Another benefit was the improvement of the health and development of premature babies as they were protected from allergens, infections, and excess light and sound. However, the incubator also posed some challenges. One of these challenges was the risk of infection that can result from using the incubator for long periods. Another challenge was the ethical and social implications of using the incubator, such as eugenics, and relationship with the mother. Some critics argued that the incubators interfered with natural selection and some mothers felt detached and not connected to their infants after leaving them in the incubator. These benefits and challenges discussed show how creative thinking combined with science can have both positive and negative implications on society.
The incubator initially treated purely as an exhibit, became an integral part of medical practices used to nurse premature babies to health. The introduction and acceptance of the incubator allowed for the recognition of care for premature infants as a medical initiative. Other examples of creative solutions to societal challenges include the Positive Deviance approach, the LifeStraw, and the Solar Suitcase. These examples show the diversity of human inventiveness and creativity.
Creative thinking is a valuable skill that can lead to remarkable inventions that can save lives and improve living conditions. The incubator is one such invention that demonstrates how creative thinking combined with science can solve an everyday societal challenge. However, creative thinking also comes with responsibilities and challenges that need to be addressed carefully and ethically.
