Strong Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship
A Leader by Nature and Nurture
From a young age, I have been recognized as someone who takes initiative. Whether it was organizing community cleanups in my neighborhood or stepping up to lead group projects in school, I have consistently embraced opportunities to guide and inspire others. This natural inclination toward leadership has been shaped and nurtured by the values instilled in me by my parents, who are both dedicated teachers. Their commitment to education and their example of responsibility have influenced me profoundly, making accountability, self-awareness, and humility the cornerstones of my leadership style.
Growing up in a household where education was highly valued, I learned early on the importance of accountability. My parents taught me that being accountable is not just about taking responsibility for my actions but also about being reliable and dependable. As a leader, I understand that people look to me for guidance, and I take that responsibility seriously. Whether I’m volunteering at TreeUtah to plant trees or leading initiatives as the Vice President of the American Marketing Association, I always strive to be a role model for others. Being accountable means setting high standards for myself and ensuring that I follow through on my commitments, no matter the challenges.
Self-awareness and humility are essential qualities that I bring to my leadership roles. I recognize that leadership is not about having all the answers or being the loudest voice in the room. It’s about understanding my strengths and weaknesses and being open to learning from others. My experiences as an Undergraduate Research Fellow at HBCU Sustainable Communities Initiatives (SCI) have taught me the value of collaboration and the importance of listening to different perspectives. By being self-aware, I can identify areas where I need to grow and seek out opportunities for development. Humility allows me to connect with others on a deeper level, fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and heard.
Leadership, for me, is about making a tangible impact on the lives of others. This belief has guided my actions in various community service projects, from feeding the less fortunate at Fill the Pot Ministry to participating in the official Guiness World Records attempt at the most meal kits prepared in 24 hours. My commitment to giving back to the community is driven by a desire to create a more equitable and just society, where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Education has played a pivotal role in my life, and I am passionate about using my knowledge and skills to uplift others. As a future project manager in construction, my goal is to build recreation centers and shelters for the less fortunate, providing safe spaces for community growth and development.
Being a leader is not just a role I play; it is an integral part of who I am. My journey as a leader has been shaped by the principles of accountability, self-awareness, and humility, and these qualities will continue to guide me as I pursue my dreams of higher education and beyond. I am committed to making a lasting impact on the world, and this scholarship would enable me to further my education and expand my ability to lead and serve others. I am ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, confident in my ability to create positive change for future generations.
Private (PVT) Henry Walker Minority Scholarship
Henry Walker Sr. was a symbol of resilience and selfless service, a beacon of honor who accomplished extraordinary feats despite the limitations placed upon him. His story—from his humble beginnings in Pinckneyville, Mississippi, to his courageous service in World War I and his steadfast dedication to his community in Batchelor, Louisiana—serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that determination and service can have on future generations. As a student at Jackson State University, an HBCU, I am deeply inspired by Henry Walker Sr.’s legacy and am committed to embodying his values through my own journey and ambitions.
I am pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Management. My career goal is to lead initiatives that build and enhance community infrastructure, particularly through the construction of recreation and community centers and shelters for those in need. This ambition is rooted in my belief that, like Henry Walker Sr., we all have the capacity to effect positive change in our communities, regardless of the resources or circumstances we start with.
Growing up as a Black woman of Latino-Caribbean and West-African descent, I have witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by underprivileged communities. My background has instilled in me a profound understanding of the importance of community support and access to essential resources. I have seen how inadequate infrastructure can limit opportunities and perpetuate cycles of hardship. It is this awareness that drives me to focus on projects that will provide safe, inclusive spaces for personal and collective growth.
If awarded this scholarship, I plan to use my education and skills to implement projects that address these critical needs. My vision is to spearhead the development of community centers that offer recreational activities, educational programs, and social support services. These centers would serve as hubs for community engagement and personal development, providing a safe space where individuals can access resources, build skills, and connect with others.
Additionally, I aim to lead projects that create shelters for the less fortunate, ensuring that those in need have access to basic necessities and a supportive environment. These shelters would not only provide immediate relief but also offer pathways to long-term stability through job training and community support programs.
The values exemplified by Henry Walker Sr.—courage, resilience, and a commitment to service—are central to my approach. His dedication to serving something greater than himself, despite the barriers he faced, is a powerful example of how personal sacrifice and perseverance can create a lasting impact. By following in his footsteps, I hope to contribute to a legacy of community empowerment and service.
My journey through Jackson State University has been shaped by the same spirit of determination and service that defined Henry Walker Sr. His story motivates me to strive for excellence in my studies and in my future career. This scholarship would not only support my educational goals but also reinforce my commitment to using my skills to build a better, more equitable community. It will enable me to advance my education and further my efforts to make a meaningful difference.
William R. Godfrey Scholarship
As a Black woman of Latino-Caribbean and West-African descent, I have always believed that our backgrounds are not just a part of us—they are the very essence that shapes our ambitions and fuels our drive to give back. Growing up in a diverse community where I witnessed both the resilience and the struggles of people facing economic hardships, I knew early on that I wanted to leverage my education to make a meaningful impact.
This scholarship, named in honor of William R. Godfrey, deeply resonates with my personal and professional goals. Mr. Godfrey’s journey—from his education at Clark Atlanta University to his career in finance and entrepreneurship—embodies the spirit of excellence and service. As a student at Jackson State University, an HBCU like Mr. Godfrey’s alma mater, I am inspired by his legacy and driven to follow a similar path of leadership and community support.
Currently, I am pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Management. My career aspiration is to lead projects that build recreation and community centers, as well as shelters for the less fortunate. These facilities are not just structures; they are sanctuaries for growth, safety, and opportunity. By concentrating on these areas, I hope to address critical needs in underserved communities, providing spaces where people can come together, find support, and enhance their quality of life.
My journey is deeply influenced by my heritage and the values instilled in me by my family and community. The blend of Latino-Caribbean and West-African cultures in my background has taught me the importance of resilience, resourcefulness, and compassion. These values drive my commitment to community service and shape my vision for a career dedicated to improving the lives of others.
Coming from a community where access to such resources is limited, I have seen firsthand the positive impact that well-planned community projects can have. My goal is to bridge the gap between need and opportunity by using my skills to manage projects that will provide lasting benefits. I believe that with a degree in Management, I will be equipped to lead and innovate in the construction sector, ensuring that projects are not only successful but also serve the greater good.
William R. Godfrey’s legacy is a testament to the power of education and the impact of dedicated service. By honoring his memory through this scholarship, I am inspired to continue this legacy of excellence and contribution. This scholarship will not only assist me financially but also reinforce my commitment to using my education to uplift my community. I am dedicated to following in Mr. Godfrey’s footsteps by harnessing my skills and experiences to foster development and create positive change where it is most needed.
In conclusion, my education and career aspirations are a direct reflection of my commitment to my community and my desire to make a difference. With the support of this scholarship, I will be one step closer to realizing my goal of building spaces that support and uplift those in need, continuing the legacy of impactful leadership and service exemplified by William R. Godfrey.
William Griggs Memorial Scholarship for Science and Math
My name is Deanne, and I spent most of my childhood wondering what my life would look like at this very moment. While my schoolmates were playing outdoors, I was drafting a blueprint of my accomplishments. Though my attention to detail and motive to succeed were frowned upon by many, I can say that it was all worth it.
By a black Afro-Hispanic young woman pursuing a career in one of the technical disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), she is combating the witless stereotypes in such a male-dominated field. Upon the completion of my Bachelor’s, I aspire to be her. To me, a STEM-related career has always been the goal. Even before I knew the exact career that my passion for technological devices fell beneath, it had already won my heart. I vividly remember my father gifting me my first cell phone at the tender age of six. At the time, other family members were thoughtfully gifting items such as the latest Baby Alive and Barbie dolls, but young me was intuitively attracted to that phone. It was my love for that phone that catapulted me to discover the field of STEM and its related careers.
I plan to give back to contribute to the field of math and science by mentoring young students and encouraging them to pursue their passions in STEM, thus, inspiring the future scientists, engineers and mathematicians of tomorrow. I believe that the next generation of leaders must have a strong foundation in these fields, and I am eager to share my experiences and knowledge with others.
Just a week ago I graduated high school with honors as I had envisioned. I ranked sixth place overall out of fifty-two scholars. But now I wonder again, what’s next? Do I reopen my blueprint and remodel it or do I pursue my Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering at Jackson State University in the fall? While I’m unsure as to how exactly my four years will be funded, the ‘STEMinist’ in me constantly urges me to persevere. I crave success.
Unfortunately, my story is not one of a kind. Countless teenagers like myself had a dream and are working towards making it a reality. I am applying for this scholarship to help me start my college education. There are a plethora of costs associated with being a college freshman and my scholarship opportunities are limited.
I appreciate your consideration, and I hope that you can help me pursue a profession in computer engineering. This is my passion, and I have a clear plan to turn that passion into a lifelong career.

Furthermore, I’m currently taking Physics in high school. I’d say that it’s a ‘love-hate relationship’. The intriguing factors surrounding Physics are all based upon its principles and laws, especially when practically applying them. Knowing that formulae and other basic facts were all that I was required of to build a foundation of this subject, a desire and curiosity grew within me to build upon it. With a prior passion for Mathematics and progressing curiosity for Physics, or as my high school teacher considers it, Applied Math, I visualize myself as a fruitful young black woman in STEM.
I plan to give back to my community by mentoring young students and encouraging them to pursue their passions in STEM. I believe that the next generation of leaders must have a strong foundation in these fields, and I am eager to share my experiences and knowledge with others. I also plan to participate in local community initiatives that aim to increase access to technology and education for underserved populations.
In addition to my volunteer work, I also plan to use my training in computer engineering to develop technologies that can directly benefit my community. For example, I am interested in exploring the potential of healthcare technologies that can improve access to care and increase the efficiency of healthcare delivery. I am also interested in developing energy-efficient technologies that can reduce costs and help to conserve resources.
I wholeheartedly believe that I will possess the skills and knowledge to make a real impact, and I am eager to use my training to improve the lives of those around me. Whether through volunteering, mentoring, or developing new technologies, I am committed to making a positive difference in the world.

As a computer engineering student, I am passionate about using my skills and knowledge to make a positive impact in the world. One area that I am particularly interested in improving is the health of minority communities. I believe that by harnessing the power of technology, we can help close the health disparities that currently exist between minority groups and the rest of society.
Minority communities, particularly those from low-income backgrounds, often face numerous barriers to accessing quality healthcare. These barriers can include a lack of access to healthcare facilities, transportation issues, language barriers, and cultural differences that can make it difficult for them to receive proper medical care. These health disparities have resulted in higher rates of chronic diseases, lower life expectancies, and reduced quality of life for these communities.
As a computer engineer, I am well-equipped to address these challenges through innovative solutions that use technology to improve healthcare access and outcomes for minority populations. I plan to use my degree to develop and implement telemedicine solutions that allow patients to receive medical care from the comfort of their own homes. This can greatly improve access to care for those living in remote or underserved areas and reduce the barriers that prevent them from seeking medical attention.
Additionally, I want to use my skills to develop and improve health information systems. These systems play a crucial role in ensuring that patient data is accurate, accessible, and secure. By improving health information systems, I hope to help healthcare providers deliver better care to their patients and improve the quality of life for minority communities.
I also plan to use my computer engineering degree to develop mobile health applications that can help minority populations better manage their health. These applications can provide patients with access to resources, such as healthy eating and exercise plans, and help them track their health progress over time. By empowering patients with information and resources, they can take a more active role in their own health and well-being, leading to improved health outcomes.
Finally, I want to give back to my community by volunteering my time and expertise to help organizations that serve minority populations. I believe that by sharing my skills and knowledge, I can help empower others and improve the health and well-being of my community.
In conclusion, as a computer engineering student, I am committed to using my skills and knowledge to address the health disparities faced by minority communities. Through innovative technology solutions, I hope to improve access to healthcare, improve health outcomes, and empower patients to take a more active role in their health. My ultimate goal is to help create a world where everyone has access to quality healthcare and can live healthy, fulfilling lives.
