My mother is a first-generation immigrant. Her mother came to this country from Trinidad when she was nine years old. My parents met when they were in high school and have been married for twenty-five years. I am the only boy out of four and the second youngest. My mother is a social worker and my father is an independent contractor.
I have lived in the inner city my entire life. The sounds of fireworks and gunshots filled both the days and nights. Outside of this, my parents did their best to shield us from our immediate environment. My parents work hard to provide for us and to make sure that we have what we need as well as some of our wants.
Having an immigrant family I was always taught how hard work and perseverance will help us reach our goals. My immigrant grandmother came to this country with two kids and no education. Her first job was as a live-in maid. She worked hard to pay her way through nursing school. This drive has been passed onto me.
I was born early at twenty-eight weeks and my mother has shared stories about me fighting for survival. I was on oxygen and was able to exceed the doctors’ expatiations. I was put on an IEP when I started preschool but had exceeded the expectations and was taken off the IEP in the 3rd grade. I have continued to prove to myself that with hard work I can reach my personal goals.
I have always loved cars. My earliest memories are of me in the garage with my father. I was learning to change the breaks long before I could even hope to drive. For my sixteenth birthday, I asked my parents for a project car. A car that I could convert from a gas engine to a diesel engine. I was able to raise some of the funds needed with smart investments in stocks and selling parts of the car that I didn't need.
Going to the junkyard with my father has always been something that I enjoyed. Our trips now had a focus as we looked for the proper frame and other important parts for my build. This has been a challenge and has required me to do research but I am enjoying the process. I know that I am lucky to have a father that supports my passion because neither of us has a strong knowledge of diesel engines.
The build is taking longer than I thought it would. There have been setbacks. There have been times when things continued to go wrong after days of troubleshooting issues. The financial aspect has been more than I estimated. However, this experience has shown me that I have what it takes to work hard for what I want.
This experience has shown me that I have perseverance. I have seen that I have a business mind and the ability to make budgeting decisions. I have learned through this process that I am gaining additional skills. Selling parts on Facebook has allowed me to experience some parts of customer service and marketing.
Ohio Technical College has an additional option that many other trade schools don't have. They have the option for me to get my associate degree. I intend to take advantage of this option. The hands-on learning paired with the associate program will give me a solid foundation to help me reach my dreams.

My father was not able to complete his college education. However, he has become a business owner and gave me the courage to follow my dreams. He works hard to make sure we have a better start to adult life than he did. My mother is a social worker who also supports my dreams and goals. Because of the love and support they show I want more than anything to make them proud.

I was born very early. I was also sick when I was born and required surgery the next day. I was diagnosed with brain bleeding and given oxygen. My parents were warned of the potential for learning disabilities. At three years old my parents were advised to put me on an IEP so that I could have educational support to help me to keep up with my peers as I started school.
When I was in the third grade I was taken off of the IEP because I had surpassed the expectations. I am a hard worker and I have a drive that has helped me throughout my life reach my goals. I have been overcoming adversity literally since the day I was born. These experiences have only served as a reminder that I have worked too hard to live to let troubles stop me from reaching my potential.

I am proud to be an American because of the freedoms we have in this country. I have religious freedom that I would not be able to enjoy in another country. I am proud of the legacy that African Americans have made despite the hardships that have been obstacles for many over the years. There is still room for progress regarding equality in this country. Respect for people that are different is something that this country needs to continue to work on.
Respect means that you accept somebody for who they are, even when they're different from you or you don't agree with them. Ways to show respect is to listen to others' points of view. This is done by active listening. This is listening without interruption. Thinking before you speak is good advice as well. Think about what you want the outcome of the relationship to be. If you are hoping to improve the relationship then consider that before speaking.
Being mindful of your tone of voice and body language are also important things to consider. These things can be misinterpreted and result in conflicts that can be hard to resolve. It may sound old fashion but treating people the way you want to be treated is very important and will improve relationships.
My suggestion for improving our country is that we start by making preschools available for all so that all kids are given a foundation of respect for others. Respect is learned so the earlier it is taught the greater the impact on long-term behaviors will be. Early childhood education is important to becoming a lifetime learner.
Affordable education is also necessary for our country to reach its true potential. Education leads to opportunities and decreases the dependency on public assistance. The cost of a college education has grown to the point that we as a society are starting to have deficiencies in many professions.
China has devoted much of its energy to making sure its society was educated in a way that makes them competitive on a global scale.
If we made the necessary changes then we would not lose our most talented citizens to other countries. The impact of making education affordable would be very beneficial to the country as a whole. Ohio would become a beacon in the US if we had free college for people that planned on remaining in the state. This would ensure that we had talented people who worked towards the common goal of making the best out of Ohio.

The cost of drunk driving on society is unmeasurable. The impact on the families that have loved ones left forever changed or dead will leave a lasting impact. The new law that would require child support to be paid to the victim's children will begin to help deal with the financial impact. Counseling should be readily available and affordable to help families deal with the mental effects.
Continuing to reach children in school so that from a young age they understand how dangerous it is to drink and drive, will continue to help improve the issues. Social media can also be used to reach the younger generation to educate them about the dangers. Celebrities have always been very good at changing the behaviors of their followers so they should be encouraged to model responsible drinking.
Car designers can start to equip cars with breathalizers so that no one could operate a visceral if they are over the legal limit. If this type of technology becomes standard it would drastically decrease injuries, deaths and destruction of property that result from drunk driving.

My parents have been married for 25 years. My father was not able to complete his college education. However, he has become a business owner and gave me the courage to follow my dreams. He works hard to make sure we have a better start to adult life than he did. My mother is a social worker who also supports my dreams and goals. Because of the love and support they show I want more than anything to make them proud.

I also have gained a new respect for education. Youtube is very helpful and informative but it is not a replacement for formal education. I am more excited than ever to start school. I want to learn and grow as a mechanic and businessman.
Ohio Technical College has an additional option that many other trade schools don't have. They have the option for me to get my associate degree. I intend to take advantage of this option. The hands-on learning paired with the associate program will give me a solid foundation to help me reach my dreams.
