Getting to attend college after graduating high school feels like the next natural progression to further equip my career path to success. I look forward to experiencing the independence of college life and moving closer to achieving many academic milestones. Throughout high school, as a student-athlete, and being an active member of civic and student-led organizations, I was privileged to meet and participate with students from different backgrounds. During those experiences, I found one common aspect that we all shared. We all were motivated to achieve as a team. I also found this to be true with other peers that I worked with to accomplish community-led projects or academic goals. Working together as a team, and acknowledging everyone's input, further helps to acquire common goals. I am passionate about setting goals and using those goals as self-motivation, giving meaning to actions, and the purpose of achieving something higher. My commitment to stay the course while working to accomplish individual and group goals make me an excellent candidate. I am a goal-setter that understands the benefits of setting goals and implementing strategies that will not only contribute to accomplishing those goals but aid in the purpose of achieving something higher together.

The statement “to whom much is given, much is required” is a message my parents began telling me as a younger teenager. They would share this bible verse with other positive admirations, as I worked to excel in academics or sports. To be in the space of wanting to do or become something in life requires planning. Along with planning is having the desire and determination to put actions to words. Believing and trusting that God has a purpose for you to do something does not mean that it will be a simple task of getting there. Understanding that challenges and struggles require one to regroup doesn’t mean that those trying times will last permanently, but I believe those times and circumstances are a way to strengthen one’s character. During high school, I’ve had the opportunity to engage in youth civic work. It has motivated me to be an active citizen in my community, contributing to civic engagement and awareness.
The community engagement activities and interacting with my peers have left me with a feeling of empowerment to affect change. Change that this type of group engagement showcased how working together as a group creates a true impact. I’ve made some lasting relationships and gained an enriched perspective on the meaning of “to whom much is given, much is required.” My future career aspirations to become an anesthesiologist have piqued despite seeing healthcare professionals on the front lines of the “unknown” during this pandemic. The impact of COVID-19 has shifted science and how communities adapt to a new way of living. This pandemic has forced people to routinely look at what’s working, what’s not, and what might work better.
New forms of scientific communication are reviewed on social media platforms before being reviewed by a peer group. Following social media outlets has been an avenue to obtain these COVID-19 updates in real-time. Having immediate access has done two things for me. First, suddenly losing close family members and grieve while still being careful to remain safe has been challenging. Secondly, the effect on me mentally has been challenging but enlightening. I’ve realized the vast importance that science and workers in the medical field are tasked with. Attending college to pursue this goal further feels like the next natural progression for me.
I look forward to achieving goals beyond my imagination. I believe that working hard, understanding that planning, determination, and commitment to give are all critical factors in accomplishing my goals.
