My name is Dasia Ariana Jackson and to explain the type of person I am, is smart, determined, and ambitious. I know you have read over hundreds of essays, but, what makes me different is motivation, determination, and ambition. Trying hard enough to become the engineer I've dreamt to be is my greatest accomplishment to have. Especially since I am a woman that wants to change the world on so many levels. I believe I can do anything when I push hard enough. Even though I'm an African American woman that wants to be an engineer, I know I can do it. Working as a woman is hard, especially in the field for engineers. I will prove to others that I am qualified for the area I'm in, just like a man would be. Indeed I might be a woman but, I'm a young woman that wants to make a difference in people's lives. Do you know how many ideas are in my head right now? I would say tons because my first idea is to make a solar-powered car that doesn’t consist of liquid gas. Not using gasoline in cars would make a huge difference in changing our climate change problem. In our world, we are going through an economic crisis that needs not to happen. The way I can make this happen is by studying the main course in electrical engineering. Based on what I said, "the ideas I thought of would make a better future for us. I will help the world by fulfilling my purpose to become an engineer. These are the reasons why I want to make this happen from the courses I will learn in college as an electrical engineer. The main work of electrical engineers is to distribute energy for different devices. They have to use their knowledge and skills of electrical engineering for solving various technical problems, just like the problem we have about climate change, which I want to be different. Going to Lawrence Tech University is my choice to get the education I need in my life. Having a bachelor's degree would make a great title for all the hard work that I will accomplish. I would say, getting a chance to go to Lawrence Tech University is not just for me but for my education, and the benefits for myself. For me, this is a massive deal for opportunities to happen, which I will cherish for the rest of my life. I thank you for giving me a chance to write this essay and letting me express the values of becoming who I want to be. I know it can be hard for some people to tell their stories about their dreams, but I tried my hardest. I would say writing this is an accomplishment to go somewhere far in my life. I'm glad that I finished this so you can read about the dreams I want to make happen. Making your ideas happen is a hard task to follow, but it is not impossible. I know my life is going to be amazing to the people I care about and myself. My chapter is, “the beginning that I will open to finish in making my dreams come true.”
    B.A.B.Y. L.O.V.E. Scholarship
I Dasia Jackson embody the B.A.B.Y. L.O.V.E spirit, due learning how to deal with barriers of not having access to mathematical, scientific, and programming classes in primary-secondary school. For example, there was basic math and basic science but never was I introduced to advanced courses like Calculus, Physics, Probability and statistics, Intro to C++, Java, Python, etc. Moreover, most students who are minorities in the United States don't have access to the opportunity in the field of technology. According to "Addressing the African American Achievement Gap: Three Leading Educators Issue a Call to Action'' it mentions "School performance constrains the future opportunities of many African Americans. When matched for social class, the gap in educational achievement between African Americans and other groups is substantial. African American children, on average, score lower on tests and are given lower grades than Asian, White, and Latino students. In adolescence, many of them fail courses and drop out of school" (Stanford CEPA, n.d.; Valant & Newark 2017). In other words, this proves the root cause of why there is a barrier to not having access or the choice to study the field of STEM. But, also young African Americans are afraid to be in this field due to having low self-esteem, and not enough confidence to reach their goals. The actions I took were to keep striving for greatness even if there was a potential for failure. Also, as a student, I made sure to go to tutoring, office hours, group sessions, and more to understand these essential advanced courses in college. Even starting an organization at my college called NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers) has given me the confidence to stay on the path of becoming a future engineer. Most of all, the actions I plan to take place are to introduce younger African-American students to technology because we need more brilliant and talented people like them. Overall, black students continue to pursue educational excellence despite the many unnecessary obstacles we face. As a result, the type of person I am is smart, determined, and ambitious. I know you have read over hundreds of essays, but, what makes me different is my motivation, determination, and ambition. Trying hard enough to become the engineer I've dreamt of being is my greatest accomplishment. Especially since I am a woman who wants to change the world on so many levels. Indeed I might be a woman but I'm a young woman who wants to make a difference in people's lives. Do you know how many ideas are in my head right now? I would say tons because my first idea is to design a solar-powered car without using liquid gas to prevent climate change issues.
Sean Carroll's Mindscape Big Picture Scholarship
In my mind, to make the world better for the universe is to keep the planet clean from pollution in oceans, stop wars from occurring in other countries, or simply form ideas by creating solutions. Otherwise, with these observations on issues within the world that are applied to everyday life isn't easy to fix these problems that happen all the time. Sometimes catastrophes are not in our control as human beings. The question is why is it important that we work to better understand the nature of our universe? First and foremost by studying our planet, we can understand where we have come from, where we are going, and how applied physics, calculus, and additional scientific and mathematical knowledge work under conditions to help the planet. In other words, our universe is our experiment we find solutions and errors every day. For example, if we had a meteorite trying to hit the atmosphere what would be the first reaction to this issue? Well, NASA would be the first to try to stop this by using Micrometeoroid Protection. According to NASA.gov, it states "The primary technique for meteoroid protection is placement of multi-layer insulation (MLI) blankets on critical areas of the spacecraft, such as propellant and helium tanks" (Michael Bell). In other words, this protection would save so many lives across the world from this dangerous occurrence. Now think about how The National Aeronautics and Space Administration thought of ways to better understand the nature of our universe. Honestly, employees from this agency do this every day by coming up with ideas, concepts, and calculations for difficult complications like this scenario. In theory, let's think about what math they would use for the Micrometeoroid Protection. Well, for starters NASA would use Equation 1 (Single Surfaces) to calculate the critical penetration mass (mc) of the meteoroid in grams for a single surface geometry. Where: mc = critical penetration of mass of the meteoroid (grams), t= wall thickness (inches), kt = material constant (0.54 for aluminum alloys), rm = meteoroid mass density (2.5g/cm^3), and V = impact velocity (km/s). This equation is identified as mc = [ 2.54t / Ktp^1/6V^7/8}]1/0.352. Next, Equation 2 (Double Surfaces) is used to calculate the critical mass (mc) for a double-wall structure where a blanket shields the exterior of a spacecraft structure (such as a propellant tank) or component (such as a cable along a spacecraft boom). Where: S= spacing between blanket and tank wall (cm), tb = thickness of tank wall (cm), sy = yield stress for the tank wall (47,000 lb/n^2), rm = meteoroid mass density (2.5g/cm^3), rt = blanket mass density (0.3g/cm^3), and V = impact velocity (km/s). This equation is identified as mc = S^3/2tb^3V squared cubed 3rd power (σy/70000)^3/2 / 0.055^3(pmpt)^1/2. Generally speaking, this equation presented above shows how math is put to use in helping to make the world a better place as well as a form of finding or figuring out multiple ways for a solution. Additionally, the universe is beautiful, but also comprehensible. We must support all people who are passionate about the universe and find ideas and concepts that seek fundamentals of physics and scientific principles. Overall, what ideas and concepts do I hope to employ to do so? My goal is to search for a recipe for our universe by researching and studying scientific and mathematical principles, but also take action in helping others the best I can for anyone. For example, I help people all the time by volunteering for Forgotten Harvest, giving to charities when I can or simply being there for an individual that's seeking support. In this case, "understanding the ultimate origin of everything is usually put in more grandiloquent terms - Stephen Hawking famously described it as knowing "the mind of God" -but be more down-to-earth" (Harry Cliff).

Mary Jackson has inspired me to pursue a career in Electrical Engineering. She had the drive to complete her courses in college at Hampton University, earn promotions, and in 1958 became NASA's first black female engineer. In that same year she co-authored her first report on Effects of Nose Angle and Mach Number on Transition on Cones at Supersonic Speeds. In other words, she fought for her place in this world and changed all black women's perspectives on studying engineering and becoming an engineer like myself, Mary Jackson is simply a genius and inspirational. She has inspired me to become successful today ever since watching the movie Hidden Figures and the book Sister in Sciences which talks about conversations with black women scientists on race, gender, and their passion for science and mathematics. Without these two sources of information, I would have never come across Mrs. Mary Jackson or the other women I read about and watched on television. Overall, this empowered me to be determined, ambitious, and intellectual due to the wage gap persisting, and economic empowerment for young women as they pursue their dreams and enter adulthood. With limited mentors in the professional world and persistent discrimination, especially in male-dominated fields, women need to support each other while going to college, or the workforce. It's better to stick together as women than be against one another through the process of education and career journey path. In the end, Mary Jackson was passionate about changing the world and making it better for the future and showed me how to incorporate those skills into my own life. In other words, I sought training in the Manufacturing Mechatronics Program, which allowed me to develop skills in technology earning college credits while attending Advanced Technology Academy. Because I completed this program, I have been selected for the HSSTP Program at Ford Motor Company. In other words, this achievement showcased my goals to one day work on becoming an innovator. Mary never stopped or gave up even when people said, “It may be impossible.” No matter what she kept striving to help others with an idea that people could not have developed at the time. Mary Jackson was benevolent whose vision came to life. I admired her because of her drive, passion, and determination. In my life, I want to not just be like Mary but to be a successful black woman in the engineering field. As a child, I knew I had a God-given ability to build things with ease. Due to that, I feel like the engineering field is the right choice for my career. This scholarship would mean a lot to me because I can grow and explore different opportunities as well as enhance my gifts and talents. My dream is to help make the world a better place and create new ideas!

First and Foremost, I experienced barriers of not having access to mathematical, scientific, and programming classes in primary-secondary school. I believe I can do anything when I push hard enough. Even though I'm an African-American woman who wants to be an engineer, I know I can do it. Working as a woman is hard, especially in the field of engineering. I will prove to others that I am qualified for the area I'm in, just like a man would be. Indeed I might be a woman but I'm a young woman who wants to make a difference in people's lives. Do you know how many ideas are in my head right now? I would say tons because my first idea is to design a solar-powered car without using liquid gas to prevent climate change issues.

Name: Dasia Jackson Intended Major: Electrical Engineering Mary Jackson (American Mathematician and Aerospace Engineer) Mary Jackson has inspired me to pursue a career in Electrical Engineering.

I believe I'm a great recipient for this scholarship due to my hard work and resilience. Choosing me would help me achieve my goals in becoming an Electrical Engineer. I know you have read over hundreds of essays, but, what makes me different is motivation, determination, and ambition. Especially since I am a woman that wants to change the world on so many levels, I believe I can do anything when I have postive mindset. Even though, I'm an African American woman that wants to be an engineer I will prove to others that I am qualified for this field of study, just like a man would be qualified for that position. Indeed I might be a woman but, I'm a young woman that wants to make a difference in people's lives. Do you know how many ideas are in my head right now? I would say tons because my first idea is to make a solar-powered car that does not consist of liquid gas. Not using gasoline in cars would make a huge difference in changing our climate change problems. In our world, we are going through an economic crisis that needs not to happen. The way I can make this happen is by studying the main course in electrical engineering. Based on what I said, "the ideas I thought of would make a better future for us. I will help the world by fulfilling my purpose to become an engineer. These are the reasons I want to make this happen, and electrical engineering is an engineering stream that comprises study and understanding of electricity and electronics. The main work of electrical engineers is to distribute energy for different devices. They have to use their knowledge and skills of electrical engineering for solving various technical problems, just like the problem we have from climate change which I want to be different. Recieving this scholarship is a massive deal for opportunities to happen, which I will cherish. I thank you for giving me a chance to write this essay and letting me express the critical values of making my dreams come true. I know it can be hard for some people to tell their stories about their dreams, but I tried my hardest. I would say writing this is my accomplishment and I'm glad that I finish this so you can read about my dreams that will continue to happen for my future. Making your ideas happen is a hard task to follow, but it is not impossible. I know my life is going to be amazing to the people I care about and myself. My chapter is the beginning that I will open and finish. Thanks again and I appreciate you! I'm Dasia Jackson, and this is my take on making my dreams come true.

Introduction: As a team, we worked together on a group design project called the Pop Can Processor. Where we discussed ideas, designs, and drawings. Also, each team member works on one component to make the process of building quicker and faster. In other words, Vanessa worked on the pop can dispenser, Sasha and Dasia worked on the pop can crusher/flattener, and Khalil worked on the crushed can transporter/bagger. In addition, we made sure to meet weekly for each part to be completed on time. For example, as a group, we mentioned to each other to keep in touch, meet each other on time, and make sure to look over everybody’s work. As a result, our work ethic was invincible. Since we were focused, determined, and motivated to present a great project for our target clients (All School Institutions). In the end, our success was determined by everyone’s communication skills, time management, problem-solving, listening, critical thinking, collaboration, and leadership. Design Development, Fabrication/Assembly, and Testing: For the engineering design process, we decided to choose for our final project the pop can pneumatic automatic can crusher processor. We chose to go with this idea since it is creative for the audience to view. Also, the way we completed the final components was in the build lab and fab lab. For instance, for the Build lab (Woodshop) we had to use the equipment at Lawrence Tech with wood materials provided by the students as well as the use of scraps from the shop. As for the Fab lab (Metal fabrication shop), we had to use the equipment with metal by the students and use the scraps from the shops. Moreover, the fabrication requirements (wood, metal, and electrical components) were to help us benefit from the tools we needed for our project. First, “the wood aspects of the design must be cut to size by woodshop tools, have at least one mitered 90° flush joint of two separate boards, in part be held together by countersunk wood screws, and have at least two dowel-pinned connections (1/4-inch diameter dowels). Secondly, the metal aspects of your project must be joined together by welding and by threaded screws. Metal components can be joined with wood screws. Lastly, the electrical aspects of the project must include simple lighting (LED lighting is encouraged) and an electronically driven drive mechanism for the transporter” (Fundamentals of Engineering Design Packet). Next, as for changes to the device during testing, we had to remove the push button with an improved version for better results. With those changes made the various materials we spent were a pneumatic cylinder, push-button, cable ties, can holder, and industrial plastic tubing. Which includes the final items we bought from Amazon, Lowes, Walmart, and Home Depot that cost a total of seventy dollars. Briefly, our design as a whole looks like a can processor attached to a can holder that is operated from a push-button, but the cylinder crushed the cans vertically. Test Results: The first real test of the assembled machine was on December 2nd. The conveyor belt and the loader still needed to be completed as per project requirements. However, the crusher was complete. The test granted us a lot of information, as the button needed to be held down for long periods for the force of the can to increase, and the cylinder jolted with each movement. We also realized that the hole for the crusher was too large, as they can keep slipping through. This caused the can to fall before it reached the desired inch-and-a-half mark.

Karl Benz Karl Benz has inspired me to pursue a career in Electrical Engineering. He had the drive to create the first gasoline-powered car, which changed people’s lives for the better. Because of his innovations, which consist of gasoline-powered cars, the throttle system, spark plugs, gear shifters, water radiators, and carburetors, he altered our country’s and our world’s way of life for now and for future generations. A car is the quickest, safest, and most convenient method of transportation. Cars can get you where you need to go without walking, catching the bus or relying on other means of transportation. Because he thought of an idea and revolutionized our economy, Karl Benz is simply a genius. He has inspired me to become successful. Moreover, Karl Benz became a notable manufacturer not just by selling automobiles, but due to his confidence, passion, determination, and persistence. Because of Karl Benz's faith and belief in himself, he changed the world. Karl Benz's inventions not to mention benefit everything you need to do in our daily lives. For example, if people need to go to the store, to a friend's house, or their homes, without transportation, our lives would be fundamentally slow and time-consuming. In the days of drawn buggies and carriages, it would take people days, if not several weeks, to travel the same distance today to cover in a matter of minutes. Traveling more easily and more quickly has greatly enriched the lives of people today and rewarded them with greater independence and that precious gift: time. In the end, Karl Benz was passionate about changing the world and making it better for the future and showed me how to incorporate those skills into my own life. In other words, I sought training in the Manufacturing Mechatronics Program, which allowed me to develop skills in technology earning college credits while attending Advanced Technology Academy. Recently, I was driving towards my destination to get home on time, and I saw an elderly African American homeless man asking for help from each individual's car. But, every person car he went up to either rolled their window up, refused to help him or drove off. Otherwise, this man came to my car, and I saw his eyes which reflected less hope, less faith, and starvation. In other words, this impacted me because I wanted to help him, so I did. I reached out of my purse to retrieve fifty dollars and I handed it to him. The point is that assisting others is not about making you happy it's mainly about giving to make the world a better place. Initially, everyone around the world is going through an economic crisis, wars, school shootings, and more. If we make one decision that can help or save someone's life that can save the world. Additionally, I choose to lend a helping hand to this human being because of his circumstances. Even if someone is poor or in poverty doesn't mean we should refuse to be useful. Giving a person cash doesn't mean it will change everything in their lives, but it's a 50/50 chance it may do some good. Therefore, doing this type of favor or other gestures can help people to stop living with this issue, which is being homeless. For example, THE WEEK states "Why do people become homeless? The reasons vary, but a few common factors stand out. One is mental illness: The deinstitutionalization and defunding of psychiatric care preceded a spike in homelessness in the 1980s. Drug and alcohol use is also often a factor: More than a third of homeless shelter residents struggle with substance-abuse disorders. But researchers say that the role of economic factors — particularly the cost and availability of housing — should not be underestimated." Generally speaking the solution to abolishing the homeless system is by offering to house, integrating health care, building career pathways, fostering an education system, building partnerships, and preventing homelessness. These details can help save the two percent of the world's population that is homeless. There are so many answers to this solution but it takes human beings to change that system and not just facts or statistics. Life is precious and everyone only has one life, so let us try to make a difference and change the world's problems and create more solutions. Most of all always have passion, motivation, and ambition to fight for what you believe in.
